“Rejoice in your work; never lose sight of the nursing leader you are now and the nursing
leader you will become.” aptly quoting Sue Fitzsimons.
I strongly agree with what Ms. Fitzsimons have stated in her quote. Many nurses in our
hospitals do not only ac nt as nurses alone, but indeed they also play the role of being a
responsible leader. In our generation today, we can’t deny the fact that many nurses are also
leaders in their families, communities, and on their job. Their roles do not only include taking
care of their patients and ensuring that they get the health care that they need but also they act as
leaders to their co-nurses, coworkers, and patients.
Over the past few years, our nurses have progressively embraced greater responsibilities.
From an integral member of the life-saving team to being a nurse leader in their respective areas.
It is important for nurses to become leaders in order for them to guide and to support their co-
nurses to ensure that they are observing the high standards of quality and safety not only for the
patients but for the community as a whole. Recent studies have shown that a culture of good
nursing leadership within healthcare is linked to improved patient outcomes, increased job
satisfaction, and lower staff turnover rates. Nursing leadership helps encourage other nurses to
function as team units. Nurse leaders also promote an environment that makes their staffs more
passionate and enthusiastic in their jobs and roles. This paves the way to achieve proper
organization which is vital to the success of a nursing team. Through nursing leadership, nurses
are able to improve their work environment and team performance.
I do believe that it takes a strong person, like our nurses to care and to lead for others day
in and day out. I am happy and glad that our nurses today have elevated their level of leadership
in nursing which includes diligent observations, management, and dedication to excellence. I am
certain enough that our nurses are one of the epitomes of genuine and excellent leadership that
the people in our community should follow. If we find ourselves settling toward positions of
leadership in other aspects of our lives, we can be the perfect person to serve as a nurse leader.
