Dear Congresswoman Cortez,

Thank you for your hard work all these years. I am writing to you to show my concern
about the Green New Deal that you are working on. I look up to you as I have always seen you
as a valuable and distinctive politician, despite your young age, your brave actions have never
failed to impress me with your abilities. My purpose today is to remind you that the right and
proper decisions can be made at the suitable time and place for the future generations of our
country to have a sustainable lifestyle and future ahead of them.

As you may know, the Green New Deal is proposing for the U.S. to change their energy
resources from fossil fuels to renewable energy such as wind and solar energy that are much
more sustainable and environmental friendly. The plan’s purpose is for the country to reduce
greenhouse gases produced by the usage of fossil fuels, as those emissions are the cause to the
issue we all know as Global Warming. It is the problem of greenhouse effect, which is when the
radiation of the sun that reflects off our planet’s surface is trapped inside our atmosphere because
of carbon emissions. It poses a great threat to humanity and its planet earth, as it does not only
involve the earth’s temperature, but affects other problems such as climate change, endangered
animals, etc.

With the Green New Deal, the U.S. will yet again be marking humanity’s history by
being the first ever country in the world to change to 100% use of renewable energy. The
people’s power demand will all be relying on sustainable energy that does not harm the
environment as much as fossil fuels, oil, coal, etc. They will be the greatest benefactor towards
stopping global warming, along with other global issues like climate change and air quality, as
with reduction to greenhouse gases means less polluted air and water without oil spills in the
ocean or carbon emissions in the atmosphere. Apart from the worldwide appreciation and
recognition they will be receiving, with this change, the country’s natural surroundings will
improve like never before, with clean air and water, less pollution and even more is the
improvement on the people’s health.

However, I wanted to remind you of the prices we will have to pay, and that it comes
with great risks. The Green New deal is estimated to cost about 90-100 trillions of dollars,
meaning a definite increase in taxes for the people. The labour workers will be in an even worse
situation with the sudden change as they will need to find a new living to be able to survive. It
won’t only be them of course, the whole country will be facing more than 20 years of economic
and environmental instabilities and consequences. On top of that, the current status of the U.S. is
in no position for any big moves, considering the impacts on the economy with the COVID-19
situation in the country still being unstable, the numbers rising and dropping everyday. Even
now, not even half of the people’s jobs that were lost are restored yet. Investing too much in the
Green New Deal right now would be worsening the country’s instability, adding more problems
to the economy, although in the future, when the country is more ready and prepared for the
change to renewable energy, when we have an even more precise and well-thought out plan, then
the decision on the resolution is well-supported.

To conclude, I am writing to you in hopes of your reconsideration in investing in the

Green New Deal at this moment, as I don’t think it is the right time for any big changes for the
country, seeing the U.S.‘s current situation. Like I mentioned before, the Green New Deal can
bring great benefits to our country, but with all the risks and cost that it comes with, it must be
done at the right time and place for the best results both environmentally and economically.
