 PIANO  PROFICIENCY  TEST  REQUIREMENTS  

 
 
SCALES  
Major  and  minor  (harmonic  and  melodic)  scales,  4  octaves,  hands  together,  correct  fingerings  
(see  scale  charts  for  fingerings)  
 
 
CHORD  PROGRESSIONS    
Chord  progressions  (tonic  à  subdominant  à  tonic  à  dominant-­‐seventh  à  tonic)  in  all  major  
and  minor  keys,  in  root  position  and  inversions  (see  bottommost  cadence  pattern  “Cadence  I-­‐
IV-­‐I-­‐V7-­‐I”)  
 
 
ARPEGGIOS  
Major  and  minor  arpeggios,  4  octaves,  hands  together,  correct  fingerings  (see  arpeggio  charts  
for  fingerings)  
 
 
HARMONIZATION  
Harmonize  all  melodies  (4  pages)  using  tonic,  subdominant,  and  dominant-­‐seventh  chords  
(Improvised  left  hand  accompaniment  required;  block  chord  accompaniment  unacceptable).      
 
 
TRANSPOSITION  
Transpose  all  melodies  (4  pages)  to  all  major  or  minor  keys.    Left  hand  accompaniment  optional      
 
 
PREPARED  SOLO  PIECE  
Prepare  one  solo  piano  work  of  an  appropriate  level  (minimum  difficulty:  Beethoven’s  Sonatina  
in  G  or  many  of  Kuhlau  or  Clementi  Sonatinas)
