Q.2 Answer the following questions : (40 marks)

a. Calculate the friction factor jf in a pipe ( of inside diameter 0.0526 m and 30.48 m long ) carrying liquid
of dynamic viscosity of 0.01 N.s/m2 and density of 1200 Kg/m3 ) . The mean linear velocity of the liquid

in the pipe is 0.3 m/s . ( Note: for laminar flow jf = 𝑅𝑒 ) .

b. A wall is made of brick, of thermal conductivity 1.0 W/m K, 230 mm thick, lined on the inner face with
plaster of thermal conductivity 0.4 W/m K and of thickness 10 mm. If a temperature difference of 30 K is
maintained between the two outer faces, what is the
heat flow per unit area of wall?

c. Ammonia gas is diffusing at constant rate through a layer of stagnant air 1 mm thick. The conditions are
fixed so that the gas contains 50% by volume of ammonia at one boundary of the layer. Diffusing of ammonia
in air is 0.18 cm2/s at 295 K and atmospheric pressure. Calculate the rate of diffusion.

d. Prove that the space-time of plug-flow reactor is equal to the space time of infinity numbers of equal size

e. Water at 45°C and 10 kPa enters an adiabatic pump and is discharged at a pressure of 8600 kPa. Assume
the pump efficiency to be 0.75. Calculate the work of the pump, the temperature change of the water, and the
entropy change of the water.
