Warning
If work is to be carried out on hybrid vehicles, read - Safety instructions

Hybrid vehicles have a highly dangerous voltage which can cause serious electric shocks, arcing or burns and
result in serious personal injury or death.

Concerns
All FH/FM and FH16 with I-shift gearbox, generation C (AT2412C, AT2512C, ATO2512C, AT2812C and ATO3112C).

Problem
After repair, fault code MID130 PID160 FMI1 or FMI2 can occur.

Reason
In week 23, 2009 the new generation of I-Shift,(Generation D), was released. From that week, there are three new
parts used in common for the old generation I-Shift (generation C), a so called “carry back” solution. The three parts
concerned are (see figures in picture below):

1. Transmission ECU (TECU).

Hereafter, in this information, designated as “TECU-D” for the new generation and “TECU-C” for the old
generation.
2. Cable harness including speed sensor.
Hereafter, in this information, designated as “speed-sensor-D” for the new generation and “speed-sensor-C” for
the old generation.
3. Sensor wheel, with 72 teeth for the new version. Old generation had 30 teeth.

Note: When ordering a new complete Gear Control Unit (GCU), the only differencies between new and old generation
are the new TECU-D (1) and the new speed-sensor-D (2). The rest of the GCU is equivalent to the old generation.

Hereafter, in this information, designated as “GCU-D” for the new generation and “GCU-C” for the old generation.

Action/Information

TECU and GCU

When installing a new spare part TECU-D or complete GCU-D in an I-Shift generation C gearbox, a conversion kit
must be run, by following download of software to MID130, to make it possible for the TECU-D to identify it is mounted
in an I-Shift generation C gearbox.
To select the correct conversion kit, TPI 432-014 and TPI 432-015 have been released. Both are connected to the
related part numbers in Impact. The conversion kit will add parameters KBQ and KBR to the TECU-D and by setting
these in different combinations it will be able to identify if just a TECU-D or complete GCU-D is installed in an I-Shift
generation C gearbox.
If the correct conversion kit is not run, there will be either fault code MID130 PID160 FMI1 or FMI2.

Note: The TECU-D included in the complete GCU-D, does have the same p/n stamped on the id plate, as for the single
TECU-D. Therefore it is impossible to identify if complete GCU-D or just TECU-D has been replaced, when mounted in
the gearbox.

Cable harness including speed sensor

In the new cable harness, there is a new speed-sensor-D, for the main shaft, reading the speed in the opposite
direction, compared to the old speed-sensor-C. If needed to identify whether it is a speed-sensor-C or a
speed-sensor-D, the identification can be very difficult since the cable harness is not marked with the different part
numbers. The only way to identify is to take a close look to the speed sensor itself, where a number is stamped.

Speed-sensor-C: I-Shift generation C cable harness, p/n 20775027, has speed sensor marked 4410371001.
Speed-sensor-D: I-Shift generation D cable harness, p/n 21068284, has speed sensor marked 4410371051.

See graphic ”Cable harness”, showing how to identify, which can be “good to know” for possible future repair.

IMPACT 4.00.51.00-SNAPSHOT 12/07/18

For the main shaft there is a new sensor wheel which has 72 teeth, compared to the old version which had 30 teeth.
This 72 teeth sensor wheel is mounted in I-Shift generation D gearboxes, as well as in later I-Shift generation C
gearboxes built after week 23, 2009, and also in exchange units for I-Shift generation C gearboxes where a complete
GCU-D has been mounted during remanufacturing.

Information for possible future repair

If a complete GCU-D has been installed in an I-Shift generation C gearbox and parameters KBQ and KBR have been
correctly set, everything works without problem.
Nevertheless, at a possible future repair, there can be a hardware mismatch again. This is due to the fact that Impact
Parts system do not check for changes done in VDA. Impact only shows how the truck originally was built. If there has
been a hardware mismatch, either fault code MID130 PID160 FMI1 or FMI2 will be set.

FMI1 = “The main shaft speed differs from both the value of the countershaft speed and the vehicle speed
received from the vehicle ECU.” This indicates a “wrong” number of teeth of the sensor wheel.
FMI2 = “The sensor indicates wrong travelling direction.” This indicates a “wrong” speed sensor (cable harness)

These two FMI:s should be corrected by setting the parameters KBQ and KBR, by VCADS, in a correct combination. It
is not needed to replace neither the sensor wheel nor the speed sensor.

The parameters KBQ and KBR means:

KBQ = 0 The main shaft has a 72 teeth sensor wheel mounted

KBQ = 1 The main shaft has a 30 teeth sensor wheel mounted

KBR = 0 There is a speed-sensor-D mounted

KBR = 1 There is a speed-sensor-C mounted

Example 1

An old I-Shift generation C gearbox (built before week 23, 2009) has previously got a complete GCU-D
installed, with KBQ = 1 and KBR = 0.
When ordering a new cable harness with speed sensors included, a speed-sensor-C will be received.
This mismatch will create fault code MID130 PID160 FMI2, but can be corrected by changing the parameters,
by VCADS, to KBQ = 1 and KBR = 1.

IMPACT 4.00.51.00-SNAPSHOT 12/07/18

The truck has previously got a complete “exchange” I-Shift generation D gearbox, which has GCU-D (=
TECU-D and speed-sensor-D) and 72 teeth sensor wheel, with KBQ = 0 and KBR = 0.
When ordering a new cable harness with speed sensors included, a speed-sensor-C will be received.
This mismatch will create fault code MID130 PID160 FMI2, but can be corrected by changing the parameters,
by VCADS, to KBQ = 0 and KBR = 1.

Miscellaneous information

If a TECU-D, or a complete GCU-D, has been installed in an I-Shift generation C gearbox, all transmission
programme software functionality (SW) is still the original I-Shift generation C version, only the new hardware
(HW) is the same as in an I-Shift generation D version. The driver will not experience any changes.
If a TECU-C, or a complete GCU-C, is going to be reinstalled in an I-Shift generation C gearbox, where
previously a TECU-D or a complete GCU-D has been mounted, there must also be a speed-sensor-C and a 30
teeth sensor wheel in the gearbox. Furthermore a conversion kit, p/n 85124923, must be run to get back to the
“original” TECU-C hardware (HW) as well as SW without parameters KBQ and KBR.
TECU-C can be recognised by the p/n 20817637 (URETARD) or 20817640 (RET-TH) marked on the plate of
the top cover. (This is the only p/n’s that have been used for TECU-C during the period it has been in
production.)
A speed-sensor-D can not be mounted together with an original TECU-C.
A 72 teeth sensor wheel can not be mounted together with an original TECU-C.
Prior to any repair of TECU and/or GCU, it is recommended to read out, by VCADS, if the parameters KBQ and
KBR are present and in that case what they are set to. By this information together with the table below, it will be
possible to evaluate what HW are currently installed.
If KBQ and KBR are not present, and if TECU-C can be recognised by the p/n 20817637 (URETARD) or
20817640 (RET-TH) marked on the plate of the top cover, it can be assumed that it is a “pure” I-Shift generation
C gearbox.

To summarize this information, the table below shows the different combinations of how the parameters KBQ and KBR
should be set for different combinations of HW and it also shows what is applicable or not.

Information for replacement of complete gearboxes

“New” p/n

When ordering a complete I-Shift generation C gearbox as original/”new” p/n in Impact, an I-Shift generation D
gearbox (AT2412D, AT2612D, ATO2612D, AT2812D or ATO3112D) will be received. Before downloading SW
to the new gearbox, the parameters KBQ and KBR must be installed in VDA by running the conversion kit p/n

85126548. Both KBQ and KBR will be set to 0.

Even though it is an I-Shift generation D gearbox, it will still have the same Transmission Program software
functionality (SW) as it had from the original I-Shift generation C version, so the driver will not experience any
changes.

“Exchange” p/n

When ordering a complete I-Shift generation C gearbox as “exchange unit” p/n in Impact, there are two
alternatives of what will be received:

1. An I-Shift generation D gearbox (AT2412D, AT2612D, ATO2612D, AT2812D or ATO3112D). Before

downloading SW to the new gearbox, the parameters KBQ and KBR must be installed in VDA by running
the conversion kit p/n 85126548. Both KBQ and KBR will be set to 0. (This is similar to what was described
in the text above for original/”new” p/n.)

2. An I-Shift generation C gearbox, always with speed-sensor-C and 30 teeth sensor wheel. However, it can
either have TECU-C or TECU-D. TECU-C can be recognised by the p/n 20817637 (URETARD) or
20817640 (RET-TH) marked on the plate of the top cover. (This is the only p/n’s that have been used for
TECU-C during the period it has been in production.)

If it has TECU-C, the combination means that it is like the original gearbox and KBQ and KBR are not
needed.
If it has TECU-D, the combination means that before downloading SW to the new gearbox, the
parameters KBQ and KBR must be installed in VDA by running the conversion kit p/n 85120150.
Both KBQ and KBR will be set to 1.
