1. Introduction
The dehydrating breather is provided to absorb the moisture in the air when the oil-
immersed transformer breathes.

Thus, it protects the transformer by preventing from the deterioration of insulation,

the shortening of life and the accident resulting from the intrusion of moisture.

2. Features
As the upper casing is made of Inspection window, the moisture - absorbing state
of silica- gel can be easily seen from the outside.

3. Construction and operation

As shown in the appended drawing, the breather is provided with silica-gel put in
the square box casing and the oil pot filled with insulating oil which is equipped at
the lower part inside the casing.
Usually, the breather keeps out of the air from the inside and the outside of the
transformer.
Only when the difference between inner and outer pressures of the transformer
attains to a certain value, the oil level in the oil pot is pressed down and the air is
Permitted to circulate.

In this time, the moisture in the air flowing in is absorbed by silica-gel in the casing.

4. Moisture absorbent
Silica-gel colored orange is used for moisture absorbent. As the absorption of
moisture increases, the color of silica-gel gradually changes first to green and finally
into blue. Green shows that drying or displacement is required, and blue does the
excessive absorption of moisture.
Therefore, the drying or replacement of silica-gel should be done judging from
such color.
However, perform it once a year at least. As silica-gel recovers its faculty of
absorbing moisture easily by drying it at 150°C to 200°C, it can be used many times
repeated.

5. Cautions at installation
(1) Put silica-gel in/out the square box casing through the inlet/outlet for silica-gel
equipped at the upper part of the breather.
(2) Install the breather on the flange of transformer side surely so as to keep air-
tightness.
(3) Remove the oil pot by turning it counterclockwise. Thereafter, pour 75 cc. new
insulating oil, then install the oil pot as it is.
