MY

SPECIAL NUMBER
PROJECT

©2012 Classroom on the Quad

FOR THE TEACHER
I use this project in my class after teaching:
 Prime and Composite Numbers
 Factors
 Multiples
 Even and Odd Numbers
 Prime Factorization

At the beginning of my unit, I ask the students to pick a number between 10

and 100 that is very special to them. I tell them it can be their age, a jersey
number, the day they were born, or any number they have a connection
with. They write this number down in their math journal. As we learn about
each of the math topics listed above, they go back to their special number
page and record information about their number as it pertains to the topic
taught that day. At the end of the unit, I assign them the “Special Number
Project.”

I like using choice boards as the one in this project because it allows the
student a choice in how to present their information. Part of differentiating
instruction is allowing students to choose based on their interest and their
individual learning style.

At the bottom of the student sheet, I have my student’s contract for their
grade. This is the grade they are going to strive for on their project. I ask
them to take this home and ask their parents to sign it. This makes the
parents aware of the project as well as the grade the student wants to
make.

I also included the grading sheet I use to evaluate their projects. Each of the
items listed on the grading sheet are specifically outlined on the student
sheet, therefore they know when the project is assigned what they are going
to be grading on.
