A single acting compressor has a volumetric efficiency of 87% operates at 500

RPM. It takes in air at 100 Kpa and 30 deg.C and discharges it at 600 Kpa. The
air handled is 6 cu.m/min. measured at discharge condition. If the compression
is isentropic, find: [a] Piston displacement per stroke in cu.m ; [b] Mean
effective pressure in Kpa

I have write down all the given and its condition for me to be able to take the
problem step by step. First we have a Volumetric Efficiency of 87% that
operates with 500 revolution per minute. It is also given the air intake has 100
kpa with a temperature of 30degress C plus 273 celsius to kelvin 303 Kelvin.
Pressure 2 which discharges 600kpa with a volume flow rate of 6 cubic m/
minute as the discharge condition. The scenario is an isentropic compression
and (a) we have to find the piston condition per stroke in cubic meter, (b) MEP
of mean effective pressure in Kpa. where in thermo dynamics; isentropic
process PV k =c , and lets recall the Work non-flow, area under the curve on PV

P2 V 2−P1 V 1
Plane Wnf = ∫ PdV =C V −k dV = as our equation 1. Let us get the
1 1−k
value of our Temperature 2 which the Temperature 1 is already given at 303
T 2 P2 k−1
kelvin. For T2 lets have the PVT Relation P2 V 2 = P1 V 1 k k
or =( ) k since the
T 1 P1
k of the ideal gas for air is not given I used the standard of 1.401 or 1.4 for k.

Let’s substitute the values from our given which we have T1
as 303 degrees C quantity of Pressure 2, 600kpa over our pressure 1 with 100
kpa quantity raise to k minus 1 over k that gives you the value of your
temperature 2 which is 505.56 Kelvin.
Let’s solve for our mass flow rate using the PV=mRT at point 2
substitute the values for 600kpa (0.1) = m (278) (505.56) where standard value
for R is 287 J/kg.K that gives you m = 0.0004135 kg/s. and for V1 again using
the PV=mRT at point 1 substituting the value of pressure 1 (100) (V1) =
0.0004135(287) (303) that V 1=¿0.3596 m3 /s

Let’s solve first the problem letter (a) Wnet, from our equation no.1 since we
have all the values need to get the piston displacement per stroke.
For Wnet,
Wnet =1.4 ¿ ¿
Wnet = -84.14 kW (negative sign indicates the work done to the system)
