Dear Biraj Singh Thapa

Recently, the internship opportunity has been opened up at the Turbine Testing Laboratory and
as a young dedicated student currently engaging in fourth year, I am so interested to be
internee in titled “Develop the procedure for the testing of Francis turbine at TTL” offered by
Turbine Testing Lab for the mechanical undergraduate student of Kathmandu University.

TTL has become the heart of the research in hydropower sector of Nepal. TTL has the capacity
to perform test up to 300 kW and perform model test for larger turbine. The lab has provision to
have four test rigs at a time. So, it is the great opportunity to develop necessary skills and
knowledge for the in the field of hydropower. As our fourth-year ongoing project entitled
“Instrumentation, Calibration and Testing Procedure of Model Francis Turbine” which has
some common roots with the intern domain. If i get chance to enrolled to be internee that will
certainly enhance knowledge for the future competition. I am also familiar with the researcher of
TTL during working in different project of undergraduate it will make further works easier.
I would love to get an interview. Thanks for your consideration, I look forward to your reply.

Sincerely,
Ram Bishwash Yadav

RESEARCH STATEMENT
RESEARCH STATEMENT

Hydraulic turbine of hydroelectric power plants is designed and manufactured according to the
head and discharge parameters of a specific plant. Hydro turbines are site specific.
Computational fluid dynamics analysis is very useful throughout the design; however, the results
depend heavily on the analysis procedure and expertise of the engineer. Also, the result cannot
be evaluated based on an industrial standard. Experimental testing according to International
Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standards is necessary to ensure performance and
reliability.

Once the design is complete, one alternative is to proceed directly to manufacturing and to test
the actual turbine on site, after installation according to the IEC 60041 standard. At this point, if
the measured efficiency is lower than expected, the remedy requires re design. This option is
costly especially for larger turbines (i.e. >30MW). Another option is to validate the design by
model tests. According to the ISC 60193:1999, experiment tests of hydraulic turbines are
performed on small scale models that are geometrically, kinematically, and dynamically similar
to the actual turbines. Parameter such as power, flowrate, efficiency and specific energy
determine the performance of the model.

Turbine Testing Lab (TTL) is working in the area of development of turbine and redesign of
existing turbine to make more compatible for the Nepal different specific hydropower site. For
the testing of turbine, Lab has to develop a standard based on IEC standard for each turbine.
Developing the standard testing procedure each time is time consuming and costly, so TTL has
planned to develop standard procedure for the testing.

The research methodology would be:

1. First selection of measuring parameter of turbine like RPM, torque, pressure etc.
2. Then instrumentation and calibration procedure
3. Setup standard data acquisition procedure
4. At the last hill chart develop procedure for the turbine
