[1] For several days, 2-year-old Ghislane had been suffering

from fever. A nurse at the village healthcare centre in Rwanda told
her mother that Ghislane had malaria. There was nothing the
doctors could do, so they called an ambulance. But by the time
Ghislane reached the main hospital, she stopped moving.
Ghislane’s mother said: “We arrived too late.” She thought there
was no hope for her daughter. The doctors said she needed a
blood transfusion as the last resort.
[2] Immediately, a hospital employee typed a message on his
smart phone. It was a request for two bags of blood. Normally, he
would have sent a car and driver to get the blood from a blood
bank. This would take 3 hours. But this time, he tried something
new. His phone received a confirmation message: The blood was
on its way. It would be delivered in a few minutes.

[3] In six minutes, the sound of a drone could be heard above the hospital. As it passed over the
laboratory, the drone dropped a red box attached to a parachute. Inside the box were two bags of blood, still
cold from refrigeration. A nurse rushed the blood to the emergency room. Within minutes, it was pumped
into Ghislane’s body, and the child opened her eyes.
[4] In parts of rural Africa, many people die from simple diseases due to shortage of essential
medicines. This problem was the inspiration for Zipline, a U.S. company. In March 2016, Zipline in
collaboration with the government of Rwanda launched the world’s first drone delivery service. Zipline
drones carry vital medical supplies to hospitals by air. The company has delivered more than 7,000 units of
blood products to 21 hospitals in the country.

[5] These electric drones are called Zips. They look like small
airplanes. They can fly 160 km on one charge. The drones can carry 2
kilos of blood products and reach more than half of Rwanda. To
launch a Zip, a technician puts it onto a catapult and enters its
destination on a tablet. The whole process takes about a minute. The
Zip flies using GPS. Once it gets near the hospital, it sends a text
message announcing the exact arrival time. Then it slows down, drops
a catapult its package, and goes back to its home base.

[6] “Before, it took at least three hours to get blood in an emergency,” says Dr. Nyonzima, a surgeon at
a local hospital. “Three hours can make the difference between saving and losing a life. Now we get blood
in 15 minutes.”

[1] Virtual Reality (VR) is a computer technology used
to produce an environment that looks like reality. With VR,
students, for example, can imagine themselves flying
through space, diving deep under the sea, or traveling the
world without stepping foot outside their classroom. In VR,
a user wears a headset connected to a computer or mobile
device to explore a three dimension (3D) setting. The user
can move around in the space. Sights and sounds seem real.
Some say the VR experience feels like jumping into a video
game.
[2] Google is one of the companies creating VR experiences for students. It launched Google
Expeditions in 2015. Now it offers more than 600 virtual field trips. Ben Schrom who works at Google
Expeditions told Time For Kids magazine (TFK) “Teachers’ faces light up because we’ve given them a
superpower; they can transport their classes somewhere else.”
[3] Katelyn Flanagan, 12 years old, used VR to jump to the surface of the moon. She also visited
Jupiter and Mars. “It was so cool and so lifelike,” she says. Monica, a teacher at Morris Plains School,
says her students loved the experience. “I think they enjoyed it so much because it’s different from
watching a video. It broadens what I teach them,” she says. Chris Chin, who works for a VR company,
says VR can also be used to teach real-world tasks. “People can learn how to fight fires or to become a
doctor. A VR experience is a safer way to learn to treat patients,” Chin told TFK magazine.
[4] Research suggests that virtual reality
could reach 15 million students by 2025. In a
research conducted by TFK magazine, nearly
70% of school administrators have a positive
view of VR in the classroom. Of those who do
not have VR in their school or region, almost
half say they are very interested in using it in
different subjects in the future. However, not
everyone is excited about VR. Some people are
concerned about its effects on kids’ eyesight. Dr.
Martin Banks, a professor of vision science at
the University of California, says “we’re
looking for evidence, but so far, we haven’t found any.” However, Dr. Banks has found proof of
discomfort. “It can lead to headaches and nausea in a small number of people,” he adds.
[5] VR can also be costly. The best headsets cost more than $500. Google Cardboard viewers are
more affordable. They cost less than $15 each but must be used with a smartphone. Classrooms would
need a smartphone for every student, or kids would need to share one. Students like Katelyn hope that
schools can overcome these obstacles and bring VR to the classroom. “I would like to go places I’ve
never been to,” she says. “You don’t have to tell students about things anymore; you can show them.”

[1] WhatsApp is now the most used messaging
application, especially among teenagers, surpassing
Facebook, Skype and others. Nearly one billion people
use WhatsApp nowadays.
[2] Teens are flocking to WhatsApp because it gives
them the privacy and freedom to exchange any
messages they want with whoever they want. “On
WhatsApp, I usually feel that I am not being judged,
particularly because there isn’t any eye contact or
physical contact, only words and signs. So, I feel more
intimacy and security. I expose myself more, but it isn’t
embarrassing, maybe because I don’t see people’s
physical reactions,” says Emily, a teenager from the
USA.
[3] Jan Koum and Brian Acton are the founders of
WhatsApp. Jan was not from a wealthy family. He stayed
with his mother and grandmother in a small apartment.
With his hard work, he finally got into San Jose State
University where he took training in programming.
[4] Jan met his business partner Brian while he was
working at Yahoo as an engineer. They worked together
in Yahoo for almost nine years and then left the company
together. Then they applied to Facebook, but they were
Founders of WhatsApp Jan and Brian not lucky. They had no plans to become rich until they
thought of making an application for iPhone users.
[5] As the initial models failed, Jan was discouraged and was almost about to give up when Brian
persuaded him to keep at it. They then created the app which received tremendous success in a very
less time. This was because the users found it pretty easy to use and they do not need to register
anywhere in order to use the application. After months of beta testing, WhatsApp was, finally,
launched in the app store for iPhones in November, 2009. Jan chose the name WhatsApp because it
sounded similar to the daily phrase, “What’s up”. This was the dream come true for both partners.
[6] Jan and Brian earned millions of dollars without any advertising on the application. They
made money in two ways. They started charging iPhone users on first time installation and
the Android users every year. A lot of people used the app and paid both of them. Reports state th at
around 250 million people use WhatsApp in a month. This is a huge number for any application to
reach in the smartphone space.
[7] WhatsApp became popular in just a short amount of time, and this caught Facebook's attention.
After several months of venture capital financing, Facebook declared that they were acquiring
WhatsApp in February 2014. The deal went down for US $19 Billion. It was Facebook’s largest
acquisition till then.

[1] There are 632 million internet users in China and 24 million of Chinese children are thought to
be addicted to the internet. Desperate parents are trying hard to help their children by sending them to
addiction treatment centres.
[2] Chen Fei, one of these children, is nervous.
His parents had told him that they would be travelling to
Beijing for the summer, but that would not be a holiday.
He has found himself in the Internet Addiction Treatment
Centre in Daxing, south of Beijing. In a small room
inside the centre, while her son waits outside, Chen’s
mother is crying as she explains to a psychiatrist why
they have travelled more than 600 miles from their home.
“Our son’s addiction to the internet is destroying the
Internet Addiction Treatment Centre family,” she says. “About two years ago, he started going
to cybercafés to play online, but we gave it little thought.
He was a good student and we knew that he had to relax. Yet the sessions became longer and he began to
play every day. His schoolwork suffered, so we tried to convince his teachers and classmates to distance
him from that scene. Six months ago, he completely lost control and started spending more than 20 hours
in front of a computer.”
[3] “We can’t control him anymore. We want him to understand what is happening to him, to get
better, and for this nightmare to be over,” his father adds. It is decided that Chen will be committed to the
centre for a period of three to six months – perhaps longer if he does not respond positively. He will
undergo a therapy treatment designed by Dr. Tao Ran, a psychiatrist and colonel in the army, who
combines military discipline with traditional techniques to overcome addiction. A doctor explains to
Chen’s parents that their son will have no access to any electronic device, no contact with the outside
world, and he will have to follow all orders. “It will be a difficult process,” the doctor warns.
[4] “Internet addiction leads to problems in the brain
similar to those caused by drug consumption,” Dr. Tao says.
“But, generally, it is even more damaging. It destroys
relationships and harms the body. All our patients have
eyesight and back problems and suffer from eating disorders.
If someone is spending six hours or more on the internet, we
consider that to be an addiction. It’s true that a month of
treatment costs a lot, but most parents consider it a necessary
financial sacrifice,” he adds. Teenagers taking medicine at the Centre

[5] Dr. Tao Ran wants his treatment to become standard practice for internet addiction. He claims
a success rate of 75% since 2008. There are already about 300 clinics in China that adopt elements of his
model – mainly the military discipline.

[1] The winner of the 2016 Global Teacher Award is a
Palestinian teacher called Hanan Al Hroub. She grew up
in a Palestinian refugee camp near Bethlehem and she
teaches refugee pupils herself. She specialises in
supporting children who have suffered from violence. She
was awarded the Global Teacher Prize for her excellent
contribution to the teaching profession. The finalists for
this prize included teachers from India, Kenya, Finland
and the United States. The award was announced at an
awards ceremony in Dubai, with a video message of
congratulations sent by Prince William. He spoke of the
great responsibility of teachers and how they could
influence and shape a young person's life for the better.
[2] Pope Francis announced via a video conference that Hanan had won the $1 million teaching
award. “I would like to congratulate the teacher Hanan Al Hroub for winning this prestigious prize
because of the importance that she gave to the role of play in a child's education. A child has the right to
play. Part of education is to teach children how to play because they learn how to be social through games
as well as learn the joy of life,” Pope Francis said.
[3] Hanan became a teacher after her children and husband
were shot at on their way home from school. This incident had a
negative impact on her children’s behaviour and personality. She
was left alone to support them. With no help from the
educational authorities, she started inventing games at home and
inviting the neighbours’ children to participate. Gradually, the
children's behaviour and grades began to improve. Now she
teaches using play at school to help pupils reject violence and
tension. In her speech at the ceremony, she told the audience that
teachers could change the world.

[4] “I’m proud to be a Palestinian female teacher standing on this stage. I accept this as a win for all
teachers in general and Palestinian teachers in particular. I tell all teachers that our job is humane and its
goals are noble. We must teach our children that our only weapon is knowledge and education," she said
after receiving the award. She says she will spend the prize money on supporting her students by creating
scholarships to encourage excellent ones to be teachers.
[5] The award was created by the Varkey Foundation, a non-profit organisation founded by Dubai-
based education entrepreneur Sunny Varkey. It aims at improving the standards of education for
underprivileged children throughout the world. “I hope that this teacher's story would inspire those
looking to enter the teaching profession. My hope is that children from around the world will watch this
ceremony and think about what their own teachers do for them,” said Mr Varkey.

[1] As men try to find work in big cities in

Morocco, women in the countryside are traditionally
destined to do the hard work. Every day after lunch,
the women of Tizi Oussem (a village in the heart of
the High Atlas Mountains) work in the fields, herd
the sheep, do the washing by the river and gather
wood for the fire. Even before that, they work for half
a day doing housework and taking care of the
children. At the end of the day, they gather the wood
or crops into bundles which they carry on their
shoulders back to the village. Then they start
preparing dinner and doing their chores for the A girl herding sheep
evening.

[2] “It’s a tough life, but it is what it is,” says Yamna, a woman from the village. Like all the
old women who never attended school, she can’t read or write, and she doesn’t really know how old she
is. “This is the life of the mountains. It’s not that good, but we don’t really have a choice. Why don’t men
carry the heavy burden? I'm not sure, but most of them just don’t.”

[3] Malika, a 16-year-old girl, dropped out of

school before she could graduate because of health
problems. But that is only part of the reason why she
quitted school. She also has to work and take care of her
siblings. Every day she gets up at 6 a.m. to prepare
breakfast, and then goes down to the valley to work in
the fields or do the laundry. In her free time, she weaves
beautiful and colourful carpets. “I regret now that I’ve
left school,” she says. “I wish I had continued to become
a preschool teacher to help children in the village.”
Women carrying bundles of wood
[4] Lahcen, 52, is one of the key figures who has
multiple responsibilities in the village. He has to call an emergency when someone is in danger, when a
woman has to give birth or when the roads are blocked in winter. He also settles disputes and makes sure
other villagers help when a family is in need. He admits that life can be difficult in the valley, especially
for women. “They carry heavy loads here. It is our tradition. Some people think it’s bad for a man's
reputation to do a woman’s work. That’s why many men leave their wives and children behind to find
jobs in big cities. They usually don’t make enough money,” says Lahcen. “They work for about 70
dirhams a day, but the cost of living in the city is higher. The families here don’t really profit from them,
and neither does the village. It would be better if they stayed here to make it a better place,” he adds.

[1] Earlier this year, a United Nations (UN)

report found that 10 percent of Cambodian children between
the ages of 7 and 14 are working. It is one of the highest rates
in Southeast Asia. The report said that one in four Cambodians
aged 7 to 14 are forced to drop out of school to help their
families. UN officials say the child labour rate in Cambodia has
dropped over the past 10 years, but the country has a lot more
to do to keep a greater number of children in school.
[2] One story begins at a brick factory in
Cambodia. Outside the building, 15-year-old Pheap and her
mother, Chrup, are turning pieces of dirt into bricks. Pheap has
worked at the factory for one year. She was taken out of school to support her father who was sick and to
look after her 10-year-old sister and baby brother. Pheap and her mother each earns $80 a month. They
work eight hours a day, seven days a week.
[3] About 430,000 Cambodians under 18 are employed. Half of them work in what the
International Labour Organization calls the worst forms of child labour. These include agriculture, salt
production, housework, fishing and brick-making. The director of the Child Labour Department in
Cambodia says that targeting areas like agriculture and fisheries has helped reduce the number of child
labourers to nearly a half since 1999. Making sure Cambodian children stay in school is a priority for the
government.
[4] World Vision, a non-profit group, seeks to
reduce child labour by offering assistance for both education
and household incomes. The group, which operates a four-year
project called EXCEL, receives financial support from the U.S.
Department of Labour and has already helped 20,000 children.
The group's leader Imelda Ochavillo says Cambodians are
becoming less tolerant of child labour. But she says that more is
needed to solve this complex issue. “If we want to reduce it
significantly, we should alleviate poverty, provide alternative
sources of income, offer decent employment for youth, and
make education accessible.” She says child labour is usually not a major issue for children under age 12.
Most of them remain in their villages and attend school. But it is between the ages of 12 and 17 that child
labour becomes an issue.
[5] Pheap dreams of finding a job in a clothing factory. That could double her wage. Her
mother Chrup wants more for her, too. She says she does not want her daughter to work in the brick
factory. But a better future for Chrup’s family is far from guaranteed. Her other daughter, aged 10, won’t
be admitted to school because of her age. Anyway, she is needed to look after her baby brother. Definitely,
it is hard for Pheap and other Cambodian children to find a way out of poverty without education.

[1] Hassan went to university in Mohammedia.
After graduation, he began looking for a job. Like many
other young Moroccans, he started work in a bilingual call
centre for a couple of reasons. “I want to practise my
communication skills and also work in a prestigious call
centre,” he said. Hassan works for an airline company call
centre. His task at the centre consists of receiving calls
from passengers who are inquiring about tickets and flights.
“My task is to receive all incoming calls and answer
inquiries about flights from a computer system. I also make
reservations and process clients’ payments,” he added.
[2] Apart from working for 45 hours per week, Hassan described the difficulties he encounters
on his daily routine as follows: “As a beginner, the four-week training I had wasn’t enough to fully
understand all the details of the job. The other problem, which many of us in the centre suffer from, is
the huge number of incoming calls that we have to process everyday.” He added: “All the answers I
give to clients are available on the computer system.” Furthermore, when asked if he considers his task
to be repetitive, he answered with a big “YES.”
[3] Recently, IBM (an international computer company) launched a new computer program
called “Watson Engagement Advisor”, which can be used in call centres. It can answer calls as it
understands plain English and can be operated by a human agent. The program is designed to replace
human agents in dealing with customers.
[4] When asked about the challenges of dealing with huge numbers of incoming calls, Hassan
said: “You try to be as friendly as possible, keeping a positive tone, but sometimes you feel annoyed,
bored and you can easily get angry.” Such qualities are of human nature; however, Watson
Engagement Advisor would keep calm all the time and answer all questions easily.
[5] But when asked if he is for or against the idea
of introducing Watson in Moroccan call centres, Hassan
was very hesitant: “I’m against this idea. I think it will
cost a lot of money. There are some clients who make
the reservation online through the website; still they call
to make sure that it’s been done. Moroccans do not trust
technology yet; they still need to hear the human voice.”
Watson wouldn’t need any health insurance nor ask for
days off. It can work day and night without complaining
or fighting over the phone with clients. Watson threatens
Hassan and other young agents’ source of living. It’s true
that with the increasing advances in science and
technology, machines are making their way to replace
humans.

[1] Malala Yousefzai, the youngest Nobel Prize winner,

was born in July 1997 in Mingora, a small village in Pakistan. During
the first few years of her life, her hometown was famous for its
summer festivals. However, the area began to change as Taliban group
tried to take control. At the age of 7, Malala attended a school that her
father had founded. After many school attacks had occurred in her
village, Malala gave a speech in Peshawar, Pakistan, in September
2008 to defend girls’ rights to education.

[2] In early 2009, Malala began a blog for the BBC

writing about the risks that girls in Pakistan face when they go to
school. She was using the nickname Gul Makai to hide her identity.
With a growing public platform, she continued to speak out about her
right and the right of all women to education. She was so active that she was nominated for the
International Children's Peace Prize in 2011. That same year, she was awarded Pakistan's National
Youth Peace Prize.
[3] When she was 14, Malala and her family learned that an extremist group was
planning to kill her. On October 9, 2012, on her way home from school, a gunman got on her school
bus and fired at her. He hit her in the left side of her head. Two other girls were also injured in the
attack. The shooting left Malala in a critical condition, so she was flown to a military hospital in
Peshawar. As her injury needed special treatment, she was transferred to Birmingham, England.
[4] After the attack Malala received a lot of support, which continued during her
recovery. On her 16th birthday in 2013, she gave a speech at the United Nations. She also wrote and
published her autobiography in October of the same year.
[5] Despite the threats to end her life, Malala
continues her fight for education. On October 10, 2013, in
acknowledgement of her work, the European Parliament
awarded her the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought. That
same year, she was also nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.
[6] In October 2014, Malala received the Nobel
Peace Prize, along with Kailash Satyarthi - an Indian children's
rights activist. At the age of 17, she became the youngest
person to receive this prize. Pakistani Prime Minister, Nawaz
Sharif, congratulated her and said that her achievement was
incomparable. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon described
her as “a brave and gentle advocate of peace who, through the
simple act of going to school, became a global teacher.”

[1] International TV channels often cover hundreds of

stories of young Sub-Saharan Africans who try to emigrate to
Europe in search of a better life. They leave their countries crossing
the Sahara desert and the sea to reach the continent. Many of them
lose their lives in the desert. Those who survive face the risk of
death while crossing the sea on small and weak boats. Yet, only few
migrants give up the dream and decide to return to their home
country.

[2] In Morocco, there are about 15,000 African migrants who are awaiting the opportunity to cross
over to Europe to realize their dream for a better life. But as the borders to Europe are more and more closed,
more migrants are stuck in the country. Thomas Estrup, a Danish journalist, visited Morocco and wrote about
the difficult situation of these migrants. Joshua is one of them. He is a young Nigerian migrant who has been
on the road for more than five years. “No border control or fence will stop him from trying,” writes Thomas.
“I will risk my life to get there. Either you succeed in escaping border control and expulsion or you die,” says
Joshua.
[3] Joshua’s father died when he was young. Joshua left school after six years of education. He wanted
to become an engineer, but his mother could not support his education or pay for his living. Unable to find a
job, Joshua left his mother and five siblings, who are all thinking about leaving their home in Nigeria. In 2003,
he made the 3,000 kilometres long trip through the desert. “I wanted to change my situation and start a new
life,” Joshua says. “I wanted to go to Europe and find any job. I saw people from my hometown coming back
from Europe with money.”
[4] Two years later, Joshua had his chance. He
crossed to Spain with a group of seven Africans. He cut his
feet and ankles while trying to climb the fences. Worse, he
got caught by the Spanish police and was immediately
deported back to his homeland. Back in Nigeria, he decided
to make the trip through the desert back to Morocco and
attempt to go into Europe a second time. “I had lost
everything,” says Joshua. “I really wanted to try again.” He
made both trips on foot and by car through Niger, Algeria
and across the border to Morocco. It took Joshua several
Fence near Melilla months to make each trip, most of which is through the
Sahara desert.
[5] He simply set out alone with no money. During the trips, he would team up with people from other
West African countries who were also heading to Europe. “The worst part was the desert in Niger. We were
short of water and food. Also, the police would try to catch us,” Joshua says. “If I manage to escape border
control, I know that I’ll make it into Europe. I have done it before and I’ll do it again,” he adds.

[1] Ibn Sina, also known as ‘Avicenna’, was indeed a true polymath
with contributions in many fields such as medicine, psychology,
pharmacology, geology, physics, astronomy, chemistry and philosophy. He
was also a poet and an Islamic scholar and theologian. His most important
contribution to medical science was his famous book known in the West as the
Canon. This book is an immense encyclopaedia of medicine. It comprises the
entire medical knowledge available from ancient and Muslim sources.
[2] This great scientist was born late in the tenth century in the village
of Afshana, near Bukhara which is also his mother’s hometown. His father,
Abdullah, was from Balkh which is now part of Afghanistan. Ibn Sina
received his early education in his hometown and by the age of ten he learnt
the Quran by heart. He had exceptional intellectual skills which enabled him at
the age of fourteen to do better than his teachers. During the next few years, he
devoted himself to the study of Islamic laws and principles, philosophy and natural sciences. Ibn Sina also
studied the work of Aristotle on metaphysics but couldn’t fully understand it because of his young age. It
was only after reading a manual by the famous philosopher Al Farabi that he found a solution to this
problem.
[3] At the age of sixteen, Ibn Sina dedicated all his efforts to learning medicine and by the time he
was eighteen he became a famous doctor. During this time, he was able to cure Ibn Mansour, the King of
Bukhara, of an illness which no other doctor could cure. The King wished to reward him for this
achievement, but the young doctor only asked for permission to use the prestigious royal library.
[4] When his father died in 1002, he left Bukhara and moved to Jurjan,
where he lectured on logic and astronomy. There, he met his famous
contemporary Al-Biruni. Later, he travelled to Rai and then to Hamadan, where
he wrote his famous book the Canon and also cured King Shams al-Daulah of a
severe illness.
[5] From Hamadan, he moved to Isfahan, where he finished many of his
greatest writings. Shortly afterwards, his health started to deteriorate, so he
travelled less often. He spent the last twelve years of his life in the service of Abu
Jaafar, whom he accompanied as his doctor and scientific consultant. He died in
June 1037 and was buried in Hamadan.
[6] Besides his monumental writings in medicine, Ibn Sina also
contributed to mathematics, music and other fields. His findings inspired later
scientists in various fields of knowledge and he is still considered a valuable
reference to many researchers.

[1] Fatmire Bajramaj and her family ran away from

Kosovo to Germany during the war in the early 1990s. She began
playing football at the age of six without her father‟s knowledge
or permission. At first, she played after school with her older
brother. Secretly, she joined a club team, using equipment that
she borrowed from a team-mate. “My father wanted me to be a
singer or an actress,” Fatmire Bajramaj, who is known as Lira,
said. “He told me that football was for men, not for women.” Yet
today, at 23, Lira is a midfielder on the German women‟s national
team.

[2] In Germany, a third of all children are born to immigrant families, and the issue of integration
has become an urgent political concern. Heike Ullrich, the head of women‟s football federation in
Germany, said “football is for everybody, men, women, black, white, all races and religions. Everyone
should have a chance to come in contact with the ball. It unites people.”

[3] Lira was five when her family arrived in Germany and settled in a refugee centre. She said that
she felt rejected by some locals as she went to and from school, hearing mocking remarks like „gypsies‟
and „go back where you come from.‟ At the age of six she joined a club in Giesenkirchen and later played
near Monchengladbach.

[4] “I was the only girl. At first the boys didn‟t accept me. But when they saw I could play football,
they decided to play with me. Later they were fighting about which team I should play with,” she said.
One day her father attended a match to watch her brother and by accident learned that his daughter had
also taken up playing football. His response was surprise but not disapproval. “He told me I was very
good. Now he is my biggest supporter,” she said.

[5] In 2007, Lira played as a substitute when Germany won the World Cup final over Brazil. A
year later, she scored both of Germany‟s goals in a victory over Japan for the bronze medal at the Beijing
Olympics. Her present club Turbine Potsdam won the European women‟s Champions League title in
2010. “Playing football is what helped me integrate. First, I learnt the language. Later, I learnt a lot about
the culture and the cities,” Lira said.

[6] “If Lira is a star in the next World Cup, maybe girls who wear the jerseys of their favourite
players on the men‟s national team will start wearing those of the women‟s national team players,” said
Ulf Gebken, a German specialist in sport and social integration.

[1] Kapour is eight years old and works with his father in a shop in a village near New Delhi. Every
morning, while carrying bags of vegetables to the shop, he runs into children wearing school uniforms. He
feels ashamed at not being in a school uniform, carrying books instead of vegetables. Kapour is one of
India's five million school dropouts. These are children of migrant workers who come to the Indian capital
and end up living in slums. Many of them can’t afford to send their children to school. Others are unable to
provide birth certificates or proof of residence for their children, which are necessary for admission to
school. Besides, there are some families, such as Kapour’s, that need their children to help around the house
and look after their younger siblings.

[2] However, two yellow buses - equipped as mobile

schools with a TV screen, books, puzzles and toys- are helping
to provide these children with primary education. They are part
of a government's project which started in 2003, to get
dropouts back into school. Every morning, the buses arrive
near four selected slums. "If the children can't go to school, we
have to take the school to them, to their doorstep," said
Sudhama, a school bus teacher.

[3] Funded by the Department for International

Development in India, the project has reduced the number of
dropouts from 25 million to 5 million. One powerful incentive for parents is that the books are free and their
children receive a piece of fruit every day. The project’s local representative said that it took time to build
the parents’ confidence. At first, they hesitated to send their children because they were afraid of child
trafficking. But they were eventually persuaded to do so. Some kids have lost a whole year; others have
never been to school. The school bus teachers get them up to the right level and then send them to public
schools.

[4] The children are proud because the school bus comes specially for them. It has changed their lives
and given them hope. After joining the bus, Shivam, aged 9, was very happy with his new life and would run
home to tell his mother everything he had learnt. Lately, he has been leading the class in chanting the Hindi
alphabet. His mother was so impressed that she persuaded other mothers to send their children, too. Shaheen,
who has spent a whole year attending the school bus, is one of the 200 children who have successfully joined
primary schools. Her life has been transformed since she joined the school bus." I couldn't count and I
could write only a few words of Hindi," she said. "Now I do multiplication and division, and I know some
English, too." What she had learnt there helped her to pursue her studies at the local primary school without
any difficulty.

[1] Tererai Trent was born in a village in Zimbabwe in 1965. She

lived without running water or electricity and had no hope for her future.
She still remembers very well her father pointing to her brothers and saying:
“These are the breadwinners of tomorrow. We need to educate them. We
need to send them to school. As for the girls, they will get married.”
[2] Desperate to learn, this little girl with big dreams secretly did her
brother's homework. "I learned to read and write from my brother's books,"
she says. Soon, Tererai's secret was exposed, and the teacher begged her
father to let her go to school. Tererai attended only two terms before she was
forced to marry at age 11. By the age of 18, she was the mother of three.
"My husband would beat me whenever he realised that I wanted to have an
education," she says.
[3] In 1991, a visitor changed Tererai's life forever. Mrs. Jo Luck,
from an international non-profit organisation, passed through the village and told the women there that they
should stand up for their rights, change their lives and realise their dreams. Tererai began to work for that
organisation and for several other associations as a community organiser. She used her income to take
correspondence courses while saving any money she could.
[4] In 1998, she was accepted as a student at Oklahoma State University, but she insisted on taking
all her five children with her rather than leaving them with her husband. “I couldn’t abandon my kids,” she
remembered. “I knew that they might end up getting married.” Tererai’s husband agreed that she could take
the children to America on condition that he went with them. The organisation helped with the plane tickets,
Tererai’s mother sold a cow, and neighbours sold goats to collect money. With $4.000 in cash put in a
stocking and tied around her waist, Tererai set off to America.
[5] Tererai’s impossible dream had come true, but it soon looked like a nightmare. Tererai and her
family had little money. Her husband often beat her and never helped with the housework – he was a man!
Yet, she struggled on taking every class she could, doing the housework, enduring her husband’s beatings,
and rarely sleeping. “I knew that I was getting an opportunity in America that other women in my home
country were dying to get,” she recalled.
[6] Soon afterwards, her husband was sent back to Zimbabwe for beating her. Later, she earned her
B.A. degree and started on her Master’s. Then, her husband returned to Oklahoma, with a disease that turned
out to be AIDS but Tererai tested negative. Feeling sorry for him, she nursed him as he grew sicker and
died. Despite all these pressures, Tererai excelled at her studies, pursuing a doctoral degree at Michigan
University on AIDS prevention in Africa. She was remarried to Mark Trent, whom she had met at Oklahoma
State University. After every achievement, Tererai returned home to Zimbabwe. In December 2009, the
happily remarried Tererai realised her greatest dream of all - a doctoral degree. So, any time you feel
desperate or discouraged by big challenges, just remember Tererai Trent.

TEXT:

[1] Facebook is a social utility that helps people communicate more efficiently with their friends,
families and colleagues. Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook, was born on May 14, 1984 in New
York. He went to high school at the age of 15. There, he excelled in Latin, so he moved to Phillips
Academy to study Latin classics. After Phillips
Academy, he enrolled at Harvard University. As a
student, he continually worked on computer projects
from his dormitory room. He got into trouble because he
used private and personal students’ information to create
an online directory. Consequently, the computer services
department wrote a complaint to the administrative board
to take measures against Mark. This didn’t prevent him
from working on his project. He built a programme to
help the workers in his father's office communicate with
each other and he created a version of the game called
Risk and a music player named Synapse.
[2] Mark Zuckerberg launched Facebook from his Harvard dormitory room on February 4, 2004. The
idea for Facebook came from his days at Phillips Academy which, like most colleges and preparatory
schools, had a long tradition of publishing an annual student directory known as "Facebook". It contained
photos of all students, professors and staff. After Facebook had become a success on his own campus, he
and his roommate, Dustin Moskovitz, began spreading it to other colleges. In 2005, more than 30 university
students were able to use Facebook. That year, Mark and Dustin moved to California and set up an office
there. Although they originally intended to go back to Harvard at the end of the summer, their business
flourished and they stayed on the west coast. Today, Facebook has four buildings in California.
[3] Facebook is now the second most visited site on the Internet. Zuckerberg was offered $1 billion to
sell the company, but he said no. His refusal to sell it out made people talk. Critics are comparing Facebook
to Friendster, the first social networking website. In 2002, Friendster was offered $30 million by Google,
and the offer was turned down. On December 2, 2009, Facebook claimed that it had attained over 350
million users.
[4] A movie based on Zuckerberg and the founding years of Facebook, called The Social Network, was
released on October 1, 2010. The film star Jesse Eisenberg played Zuckerberg in the movie. After
Zuckerberg was told about the film, he responded, "I just wished that nobody made a movie of me while I
was still alive." The film is based on the book The Accidental Billionaires by Ben Mezrich and won
the Golden Globes award for Best Picture on January 16, 2011. Producer Scott Rudin thanked Facebook and
Zuckerberg "for his willingness to allow us to use his life and work as a metaphor through which to tell a
story about communication and the way we relate to each other.”

Professor Muhammad Yunus, a Bangladeshi banker and economist, is the

inventor of the idea of microcredit. It consists in giving out small loans to people who
are too poor to obtain credit from ordinary banks. His revolutionary Grameen Bank,
which is based on principles of trust and solidarity, helps needy people to start small
businesses and move out of poverty.
Mr Yunus, who is often referred to as the banker to the poor, came up with the
idea in 1976 while teaching economics at Chittagong University, in southern
Bangladesh. He found out that lending small amounts of money to the women who
were making furniture in a nearby village could make a difference in their life. He lent
$ 27 from his own pocket to 42 women who used to borrow money from local lenders
who asked for high interest rates. Thus, microcredit was born, and so was Grameen
Bank. Until now, it has lent $ 6.38 billion to 7.4 million of the poor in the world, most
of them in Bangladesh. According to Mr Yunus, the majority of the beneficiaries are
women since they not only use the money they get from the bank better than their
husbands, but they are also careful about paying it back.
The professor‟s idea is to help the poor to help themselves: „give a man a fish and you feed him for a day,
teach him how to fish and he feeds himself for life.‟ So he never gives charity to a blind person, a disabled beggar
or a mother holding her baby. Yunus told journalists in an interview at Grameen Bank: "I prefer to solve their
problems for the rest of their life and not just take care of them for one day."
To guarantee repayment, the bank uses a system of solidarity groups. To be selected for a loan, the borrowers
have to form a group to support each other in repaying. If one group member fails to pay back his debt, the others
are also responsible. Even beggars have benefited from this programme. They have been given small loans to start
out as street vendors to help them give up begging.
The success of Grameen Bank has encouraged many developing countries, and even industrialised ones, to
adopt this model. Banks similar to Grameen Bank have been operating in many countries including France, Canada
and the US, where microcredit has been introduced to some of the poorest communities in Arkansas.
Professor Yunus has managed to solve financial and social problems of millions of poor people. His work,
therefore, has been internationally recognised. In 2006, he received the Nobel Prize for his efforts to create
economic and social development for people from the lowest level of society. The Norwegian Nobel Prize
Committee said that by giving the award to Mr Yunus, they wanted to encourage the fight against poverty as well
as the need to empower women.

Bill Gates was born on October 28, 1955 in a family having rich
business, political and community service background. His grandfather was
vice president of National Bank and his father was a lawyer. Bill strongly
believes in hard work. He also believes that if you are intelligent and know
how to apply your intelligence, you can achieve anything. From childhood,
Bill was intelligent, ambitious and competitive. These qualities helped him
to attain top positions in the profession he chose. In school, he had an
excellent record in mathematics and science.
Bill‟s parents noticed their son's intelligence and decided to send him to
a private outstanding school, where he was first introduced to a computer. It was a very important decision in
Bill‟s life. Bill and his friends were very much interested in computers and formed "Programmers Group" in
late 1968. In the next year, they got their first opportunity in Information Sciences Company where they were
selected as programmers. So, they started making money although they were still students.
Bill and his close friend Paul Allen started a new company of their own named Traf-O-Data. They
designed a small computer to measure traffic density. From this project, they earned around $20,000. In 1973,
he left home for Harvard University. There, he almost forgot about the world of computers because he spent
many nights studying one of the toughest mathematics courses. Bill and his friend Paul remained in close
contact even though they were away from each other. They would often discuss new ideas for future projects
and the possibility of starting a business one day. At the end of Bill‟s first year at the university, Paul came
close to him so that they could work on some of their ideas. That summer, Paul kept on pushing Bill for
opening a new software company.
Within a year, Bill dropped out of Harvard. Then, he formed Microsoft. Bill's vision is: "A computer on
every desk and Microsoft software on every computer". Bill is a visionary person and works very hard to
fulfill his vision. His belief in high intelligence and hard work has put him where he is today. Microsoft is
good competition for other software companies and Bill will continue to crash his competitors. His powerful
beliefs have helped him increase his wealth and his monopoly in the industry.
Bill is not a greedy person. In fact, he is quite a giving person when it comes to computers, Internet and
any kind of funding. He visited Chicago's Einstein Elementary School and donated a total of $110,000. He
offered computers, and provided internet connectivity to many schools. Also, Bill donated $38 million for the
building of a computer institute at Stanford University. Bill plans to give away 95% of all his earnings when
he is old and grey.

The Economic Commission for Africa estimates that between 1960 and 1989, some
127,000 high1y qualified African professionals left Affica. According to the International
Organisation for Migration, Affica has been losing 20,000 professionals each year since
1990. This has raised claims that the continent is dying a slow death from brain drain,
which has financial, institutional, and societal costs. African countries get little return from
their investment in higher education, since too many graduates leave or fail to return home
at the end of their studies. The United Nations has finally admitted that emigration of
African professionals to the West is one of the greatest obstacles to Africa's development.
Kofi Apraku, an African living in the US, is eager to go back home. Nearly twenty years ago, he came to
America as an exchange student to finish high school. Kofi ended up staying there to get his doctorate. He
achieved distinction not only in his professional career, but also in his social and personallife. Nowa prof essor of
economics at the University of North Carolina at Asheville, Apraku is preparing to go back to Ghana to work
with the ministry of agriculture as director and policy counsellor. " The missing link for Affica's social and
economic development," he says, " is the Affican immigrant who has become educated and experienced abroad
but who has not been able to go back home."
A number of factors have kept expatriates, such as Apraku, from getting back to their homeland. Somewhat
like African refugees, African immigrants are victims of brutal governments, poverty, civil wars, poor economies,
etc. According to a United Nations estimate, 100,000 trained professionals like Apraku are working in the West.
Most of them can't - or won't - return. The result: a devastating brain drain that has deprived the African
continent of much of its top talents.
Surprisingly, some Africans are willing to return to where they belong. Despite the very low salaries, poor
professional facilities and limited opportunities, thev are decided to make it back home. "Africa's development
remains an African responsibility," says Apraku. "Some of us have been lucky to get enough experience to share
such a responsibility," he continues.
Certainly, the trip back home can be hard. For instance, the average salary in African universities does not
exceed 500 dollars a month. Many of the best-paid jobs in Africa still go to foreigners. Thousands of foreign
advisors in the public sector in sub-Saharan Africa are paid up to 4,000 dollars a month. It is true that these have
expertise unfound in Africa, but this situation can be changed if, and only if, educated Africans are willing to
sacrifice and work together for a brighter tomOITOWin Africa.
