Week Covered (specify Week 2 (October 12-16, 2020)
the dates):
Title of the Activity: Separating Elements from Compound
Objective(s): 1. Identify which is an element and compound;
2. Be familiar with the Periodic Table of Elements;
3. Name elements that are listed in the Nutrition Facts of a
food label;
4.Recognize that most of the food ingredients are examples
of compound; and
5. Explain the importance of substances.
Materials (preferably  Scissor
localized and available  Food/Medicine labels
at home):  Paste

Note: This activity sheet can be used with power point

presentation, and printed materials.
Procedures (direct and Activity 1. Find me, NOT?
concise):
1. Read the concept below.
Substances are classified into elements and compounds.
Elements is a pure substance that consist one type of atom
and cannot be separated into simpler substance. Each
element is represented by a unique symbol. The notation
for each element can be found on the periodic table of
elements.
The elements can be divided into three categories that have
characteristic properties: metals, nonmetals, and
semimetals. Most elements are metals, which are found on
the left and toward the bottom of the periodic table. A
handful of nonmetals are clustered in the upper right
corner of the periodic table. The semimetals can be found
along the dividing line between the metals and the
nonmetals.

Chemists use symbols to represent elements. A symbol is a

letter or picture used to represent something. Chemists use
one or two letters to represent elements. These elements
are arranged in the Periodic Table. Here is an example of
Periodic Table of Elements.

2. The picture above shows the different elements that are

found in nature and are synthetically made. Familiarize the
different elements’ name and symbol.
In the table below, fill-in the missing parts.
Name Symbol Group Number
Ex. Sodium Na 1A
Ag
Iodine
Nickel
Pb
Arsenic

A compound is a substance formed when two or more

elements are chemically joined and cannot be separated by
physical means like decantation.
Examples:
Water (H2O) - a compound because it is made up of more
than one element - Hydrogen and Oxygen
Salt (NaCl) - a compound because it is made up of more
than one element - Sodium and Chlorine
Sugar (C12H22O11) - a compound because it is made up of
more than one element – Carbon, Hydrogen and Oxygen.

1. Refer to the Nutrition Facts found in any food product.

For example:
If you look at the Nutrition Facts
closely you can observe that there

Guide Questions:

1. What elements are metal? Give at least 3 examples.

2. How elements are different from compounds?

3. How are they similar?

4. Reasons why the discovery of elements is a break

through in science.

Activity 2. LOOK-CUT-ME
Previously, you have already learned about the different
classification of substances. Now, you will understand the
relationship between the two and its differences by
performing the activity below.

Materials:
Food labels/Nutrition Facts
1 pair of scissors
1 Paste
Procedure:
1.Using a pair of scissors, cut out the food labels or the
nutrition facts you can find at home.
2. Look for any elements or compound.
3. For elements, use the Periodic Table above as your guide
in knowing how to arrange each element.

Figure 3: Blank Periodic Table

4. Cut out the elements you find and paste it in the blank
periodic table properly.
5. Fill in the periodic table as much as possible.
6. For compounds, cut out and paste at least 10 chemical
formula and provide its common name or vice-versa.
Here are some examples of compounds with its common
names

___ 5 points- Yes, the response was correct and
especially insightful or detailed.
Concepts learned: The term 'substance' is fairly common and tends to be used
with several different meanings in everyday language.
However, in the world of physical science, a substance is
simply a pure form of matter. In other words, a substance
is matter that contains only one type of atom or molecule

Types of Substance

Elements are the simplest form of matter, which means

they cannot be broken down into smaller components
physically or chemically. All elements are listed on the
periodic table, and there are at least 118 of them known to
man! Examples of elements include carbon (C), hydrogen
(H), oxygen (O), and sodium (Na), just to name a few.
Each element has different set of properties. No two
elements have the same set of properties. There are quite
number of elements known in the current time. Thanks to
the works of our early scientists, they were able to
systematically organize all of these elements in what we call
the periodic table of elements or sometimes simply referred
as periodic table.

Compounds, on the other hand, are made up of two or

more different elements held together by chemical bonds
and functioning as a unit. While compounds are also pure
substances, they differ from elements because compounds
can be broken down into simpler components (the elements
that make up the compound). Some examples of
compounds are carbon dioxide (CO2), rust (Fe2O3), and
table salt (NaCl).
