DESIGN OF RECTANGULAR BEAM FOR FLEXURE

A. WORKING STRESS DESIGN METHOD

1. Design a 3m cantiliver beam to carry a wall load of 12 KN/m and a live load of 28 KN/m
in addition to its own weight. Use fck = 20 Mpa, fs = 140 Mpa, and n = 8, b = 250 mm.
(allow for 8 stirrups)
2. Design a singly reinforced rectangular section with width 250 mm to carry a service load
bending moment of 135 KN-m. The allowable concrete and steel stresses fc = 0.45fck and
fs = 0.5fy are to be developed simultaniously. fck = 20 Mpa and fy = 300 Mpa. (allow for
8 stirrups)
3. Design the overhanging beam shown bellow using b = 300 mm, fck = 30 Mpa, fs = 140
Mpa and n = 8 at sections A, B, and C. Imposed DL = 12 KN/m, LL = 8 KN/m in
addition to its own weight. (allow for 8 stirrups)

4. The beam in question (1) is limited to have b = 250 mm and D = 400 mm. Design the
beam if it has to be simply supported. (allow for 8 stirrups)

A. LIMIT STATE DESIGN METHOD

1. A simply supported beam spans 8m and is subjected to a LL = 30 kN/m in addition to self

weight. Materials C-25, S-300, class I are used. If b = 250mm, determine the depth
required to satisfy singly reinforced section at mid-span and the corresponding flexural
reinforrcement.
2. A rectangular singly reinforced beam which is fixed on both sides is to be designed for
dead load of 7.0 KN/m plus self-weight and live load of 30 KN/m, with a 7.5 m simple
span. Material strength will be S-400 and C-25 for steel and concrete respectively. If b =
250 mm and if the total beam depth must not exceed 600mm. Calculate the required
beam depth and tensile steel requirement. (show sketch for both maximum positive and
negative moment sections)

3. A simply supported singly reinforced rectangular beam is to be designed, with effective

depth approximately 1.5 times the width, to carry a service live load of 20 KN/m in
addition to its own weight, on 7.5m span. With fyk = 300MPa, fck = 30MPa and class I
work, determine the required dimensions b, d, and D, and steel reinforcing bars. Include
sketch of the designed cross-section. Allow for 8 stirrups.

4. A two-span continuous concrete beam is to be supported by three masonry walls spaced

7m on centers. A service live load of 25 KN/m is to be carried, in addition to the self-
weight of the beam. A constant rectangular cross section is to be used, with D = 2b, but
reinforcement is to be varied according to requirements. Find the required concrete
dimensions and reinforcement at all critical sections. Allow for 8 stirrups. Include
sketches for critical sections. Use fck = 30MPa, fyk = 400MPa and class I work.

5. A rectangular concrete beam measures 300mm wide and has an effective depth of
450mm compression steel consisting of two 26 bars is located 60mm from the
compression face of the beam. If fck = 25 MPa and fyk = 400 MPa, what is the design
moment capacity of the beam, for the following tensile steel areas: (a) As = 332 in one
layer, (b) As = 432 in two layers, (c) As = 632 bars in two layers (Note: check for
yielding of compression steel in each case).
