Olofu (2017) posted that study habit is how a student takes his or her studies it greatly determines his/her level of academic
achievements. The level of preparation and learning strategies developed and utilize consciously by students, go a long way to
influence their level of academic performance. Also bad study habits as explained by John (2010) are negative or non-
productive study habits which are undesirable and counter-productive to students’ academic performance. When developed
and utilized by students at all levels, they incline to hamper academic progress and presentation of the users. Due to the
peculiarity and uniqueness of each student, what may be considered as bad study habits to them “A”, may seem to be very
productive and efficient for student “B” (John, 2010). However, positive or good study habits which students can employ in
order to improve their academic performance. They are; attending all classes; reading their notes daily; reviewing material
prior to it being covered in class; study daily; have at least one conference with the professor; develop and learn a word list for
the course; read materials to improve your background in the course (other than text); attend help session; attend learning
resource lab when available; develop a list of possible questions; ask questions in class; study an old exam (when available);
avoid a last minute cram session; and sleep at least 8 hours the night before exams commence (Katelyn, 2013). In the past
times, the era wherein modern technologies still do not yet exist, students rely mostly in educational materials such library,
observations, notes, books just to review and study their lessons. They put a lot of extra efforts in order to gain information
(Manansala, 2013). However, the world of academia is changing at a rapid pace. For the recent several centuries, education
was conducted almost uniformly, especially when it came to studying. Higher levels of academic studying needs to simply read
from the textbook or retrieve books from the library. Students would spend huge chunks of time just looking for information,
in addition to study time (Allen, 2016). Along with the rapid growth and change of modern technology, students become more
reliant on electronic gadgets around them. Because the students believe in the power of gadgets, they all rely on their works
in them. As a result, they tend to forget to be responsible in their way and let themselves be controlled with by all the
comforts that the gadgets give them. Unlike before, they allot less time in studying and putting more time in using the gadgets
because they have this idea that doing researches and assignments can be easily done because of it. Modern technology
causes great distraction in the study habits of students (Manansala, 2013). It is also right to state that technologies are also a
major factor as a distraction for students. However, this can also promote procrastination Rosal (2013) The only way to
prevent this is to provide students with a much more complex assignments and homeworks so that students would be
challenged. We cannot repulse the fact that technology can be a major distraction when studying. Using the internet itself can
be distracting because of all the social networking sites and the games that are available with just one click. Of course there is
the usual cellphone, iPod and iPad that can really distract the students. This will all shrink down to the age and the self-
discipline of the student With the arrival of new technologies and social media, students at college are finding it increasingly
difficult to stay focus and study effectively. Poor study habits are the downfall of many a student, and with so many varying
ways to effectively study. To eliminate the temptation of distractions altogether, it’s best to put away mobile phones, laptops
and tablets from the room before students start studying, unless of course they are required for learning. Set yourself a goal
to not check your phone until you finish studying or your study session is complete. Habits are tough to break, but if you
follow these suggestions you will eventually find the temptation to be less and less (Lucanus, 2018). With advances in
technology, the study habits of the students have dramatically changed. Technology has affected the way teacher present
information; therefore, students are learning and studying differently. Gone are the days of slaving over books in the library
and scribbling down notes on paper (Ireland, 2018). People are becoming increasingly reliant on technology in this modern
world, and the repercussions of this are now being felt in the newer generations. The level or standard that we have set for
our children in regards to technology is not necessarily a good one, as electronic use in all aspects of life has become highly
our children in regards to technology is not necessarily a good one, as electronic use in all aspects of life has become highly
normalized. The effects of this obsession have had both positive and negative effects on study habits in many ways. Easily the
biggest effect of technology on study habits is where the attention span is concerned. When electronic gadgets are available,
the length of time we spent focused on homework is significantly shortened. It’s easy for students to become distracted by
their electronics when they are surrounded by them. It’s best to try and instill good habits early on by setting ground rules
when it comes to screen time. Good habits built early will show benefits for years to come. Though our electronic gadgets
have the potential to inflict more harm than good, by instilling good habits in ourselves and our children, we can use
technology to benefit us in our everyday lives. As long as we have good self-control, our gadgets can enable us to be
successful in our studies, which will lead us to even more success in all our careers. Our electronics have the power to
connect us to all the resources we need in order to produce amazing work no matter the field – it’s just all of us to use them
for good! (Parillo, 2018).
