 ROOM 114 – CLASS NEWS
WHAT HAVE WE BEEN UP TO?
In math this week, we started Unit 6,
which is a short unit on volume, capacity, and
weight. We reviewed the formula for finding the
volume of a 3-dimensional object and also
looked at different units and ways to measure
capacity.
We continued our unit of inquiry this
week titled: We, the People. The central idea for
this planner is that systems of government
impact a community’s social and economic
condition. We finished learning about the
American Revolution and started investigating
the results of this important war. We reviewed
the three branches of government and began
inquiring about the Bill of Rights. Next week, we
will learn about other systems of government
from around the world, and compare them with
our government here in the United States.
This week in literacy, we started a new
book club. All students will be reading
Daughter of Liberty, which is a true story of the
American Revolution. We also started
brainstorming ideas for a persuasive essay that
deals with a topic at our school. Our spelling
list this week focused on two-syllable words
and words with the schwa sound.
We also interviewed our buddies this
week and will start working on a PowerPoint
slide show to present our interviews. Our
media specialist, Ms. Dahl, will be helping us
review and create our PowerPoints.

Sorting through the branches of government
COMING SOON!!
The MIPTO will be conducting a "Love to read-
a-thon" beginning on February 14th. Each
student will get a calendar where they can
keep track of their reading time and a pledge
form to record pledges. Each Thursday we will
collect the calendars to determine who read
the most minutes. We will return the
calendars on Friday so they can track their
progress for the next week. Each week the
class with the highest total minutes read will
get a trophy. The individual with the most
minutes read will get a "mystery bag". The
read-a-thon will conclude on March 7th. The
top readers in k-1, 2-3, and 4-5 will get to
choose a gift certificate from either Target,
Barnes and Noble, or 1/2 Price Books. More
information will be sent home soon!
Daughter of Liberty Book Club
MID-TERM REPORTS
We will be sending home mid-term reports
on Monday, January 31. These reports will
show your child’s current progress in math
in reading. Please sign and return the cover
sheet by Friday, February 4. Final report
cards will be shared and discussed with you
during conferences in March. Just a
reminder that you can always access your
child’s progress and grades anytime online
through Family Access.
