Merti Dusun Jipangan in the Middle of a Pandemic

Indonesia is a country that is rich in cultural diversity. Each region has its own characteristics. As
Indonesian citizens, we are obliged to preserve it in order to maintain this culture. In addition, the whole
world is facing the Covid pandemic, including Indonesia itself. The rules for carrying out physical
distancing do not rule out the possibility of hindering this cultural preservation process. We must think more
carefully to find a way out without breaking health protocols.

There are many ways to preserve culture in the midst of this pandemic. One example is the
preservation of the Merti Dusun culture in Jipangan, Bangunjiwo, Kasihan, Bantul. Merti Dusun or Bersih
Dusun is a form of Javanese tradition as an expression of gratitude for God's grace. This activity initially
started with mutual cooperation to clean the entire village, then continued with Gunungan, which is a harvest
of various vegetables and fruits. All these activities have an important meaning, namely unity as stated in the
Pancasila, the third precept. During this pandemic, people are urged to stay at home and keep their distance.
Therefore, this kind of activity is in danger of not being carried out.

Preserving culture / traditions does not have to endanger one's own health. We can find other
alternatives to do it. Merti Dusun activities can be changed by continuing to do mutual cooperation but on
their respective yards. If we want to do it together, we must adhere to health protocols and make sure the
weather is appropriate. We also help each other by spraying disinfectants into people's homes. With this, we
can stay connected to each other.

Therefore, we should continue to preserve Indonesian culture which is closely related to the values of
Pancasila for the survival of the nation. Preservation does not have to violate the rules, but still consider the
health of each person. Everything is also inseparable from the cooperation between the surrounding
communities to create a conducive and harmonious environment.

Gillian Ayres is a well-known artist. He is a painter whose work has been known throughout the
world. His work is so unique and impressive. The paintings that arise and the aesthetic style make his
work have its own charm. The meaning of painting also complements the extraordinary beauty of
Gillian's work.
