Folk Arts and crafts of Northern


Luzon

An art is the embodiment of

Artists makes artistic
expressions using different
tools, materials and methods.

Performing Arts – form of art


which use the artists’ bodies,
faces, movements and
presence as media.
Visual Arts – are arts that can
be seen and can be
appreciated by looking at
them.
ELEMENTS OF ARTS

Forms Color
Line – a mark made by a moving point
Shape – is a two-dimensional figure enclosed by a line
Form – refers to an object with three
dimensiond namely the height, width and depth
Form – refers to the distance or area – between,
around, above and below – within the objects
Texture – refers to the surface quality of an object
– perceived through touch and sight sense

Tactile Texture Visual Texture


- perceived by touching an object - Texture represented by using
graphic elements
Color – derived from reflected light
– is what the eyes see when light bounces off an object

Primary Color
- Colors that have not been mixed
red, blue and yellow

Secondary Color
- Colors made up of two primary colors
Red+blue=violet, yellow+blue=green,
red+yellow=orange

Tertiary Color
- Colors made up of primary and
secondary colors
• The Philippines has a largest
number of cultural and linguistic
groups.
• One of the largest is the Ilocano
groups.
• The mainstreams are living in the
Abra, Isabela, La Union and other
parts of the country.
• They are historically highly
influenced by Christianity.
• This is evident in the architectural
structures built during the colonial
times in various places in the region.
Paoay Church is declared
as a National Cultural
Treasure by the Phil.
Government in 1973 and a
UNESCO World Heritage
Site in 1993.
Ilocos Region
Vigan is considered as the
“Intramuros of the North.”
It retains the Spanish colonial
architecture along its narrow and
cobble-stoned streets known as
Calle-Crisologo.
The historic town was established
in the 16th century.
One of the best examples of a
planned Spanish colonial town in Asia.
Its architecture exhibits the fusion
of cultural elements from Philippines,
China and Europe.
Vigan Houses

Vigan houses are unique for


having preserved much of its
colonial character and influences.
The distinctiveness of its
structures is evident in the grid
street patterns and historic urban
layout.
Textile
Ilocos Region
is known for
Inabel
Fabrics
This special
fabrics is made
from cotton
that underwent
the process of
binatbatan.
Textile
Binatbatan
is one of the
Ilocano ways of
processing
textile wherein
the cotton balls
are separated
from the seeds
of the local fruit
tree
kapasanglay.
Textile
The Inabel
designs are
inspired by natural
elements: patterns that
depict different
landforms, the colors of
the flowers and
vegetation, plain, zigzags,
animal patterns, the
ocean waves, or the
glittering night sky.
Pottery
Ilocanos are also
known for their
centuries-old
tradition of burnay
pottery.
In some other
regions, it is also
known as tapayan
or banga.
Pottery Burnay is an
unglazed earthenware
jar.
It has dark colors
because the clay is burnt
before it is molded
The clay is tempered
with fine sand, making
it more solid and
heavier as compared to
terracotta jars.
It is done with just the
use of potters’ skillful
hands with pottery
wheel and kiln.

Burnay
is used for storage of
water, rice grains, basi
(sugarcane wine), and
condiments.
It is also used in
fermentation of their
well-known sukang
Ilocano.
