COURSE OVERVIEW
Course Code: Mar Env
Course Title: Marine Environment

Course Description:
This is an introductory (as much as an enabling) course that intends to give the student
with the knowledge, skills and attitudes that are required toensure compliance with
marine pollution prevention requirements, in particular, the precautions to be taken to
prevent pollution of the marine environment; anti-pollution procedures and associated
equipment; and pro-active measures to protect the marine environment.

Course Outcomes: At the end of the course, the student will be able to:

 Define the meaning of MARPOL 73/78 and explain its purpose.


 apply gained knowledge with regards to the precautions to be taken to prevent pollution of
the marine environment.
 state the specific violations to the Convention, which are prohibited and sanctioned by the
Administration of the ship concerned based on established rules for such violations, wherever
and whenever they occur.
 describe the inspections which may be made by Port State authorities on ships and outline
actions which they may take.
 describe the provisions for the detection of violations and enforcement of the Convention .
 state that reports on incidents involving harmful substances must be made without delay.
 state that Annex IV contains a set of regulations regarding the discharge of sewage into the
sea, ships' equipment and systems for the control of sewage discharge, the provision of
facilities at ports and terminals for the reception of sewage, and requirements for survey and
certification.
 describe the provisions regarding the discharge of sewage into the sea (PO2);
 state that the special areas for the purposes of Annex V are the Mediterranean sea, Baltic
Sea, Black Sea, Red Sea, "Gulfs" area, North Sea, Antarctic area (south of latitude 60
degrees south, Wider Caribbean region including the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea.
 explain the control of discharge of oil as stated in Regulation 9 of MARPOL 73/78. explain
Particularly Sensitive Sea Areas and
 explain the methods for prevention of oil pollution and discharge provisions for oil and oily
waste from machinery spaces outside
