Good morning,
Happy Hispanic Heritage Month! This week we center the
needs of the victims affected by the fires in California,
Oregon, and Washington. Join us in celebrating this month as
we highlight the voices of our members and program
participants. Also, take a look at this Friday’s screening and
panel discussion of “Blood on the Wall”.
Here’s what else you will find in this issue:
• Also today, the #StopHateForProfit Week of Action is holding an
Instagram freeze. See how you can join in!
• Sign up for our FTIP's Community Outreach events.
• LULAC now has a series of volunteer opportunities with our various
Programs, including mentoring. See how you can get involved.

The worst wildfires in years are racing across California, Oregon and
Washington State. Many people are missing, entire neighborhoods are being
wiped out, and firefighters are battling day and night to help stop or slow the
flames. Thus far, 500,000 people have been forced out of their communities in
Oregon. Thousands of Latinos have lost their homes. In California alone, 3-
million acres and 20,000 homes have been scorched.
Local LULAC leaders on the scene describe a dire situation with many
Spanish-speaking or undocumented essential farmworkers feeling stranded and
unsure of what to do. Jobs are gone and families are having trouble getting help,
many of which are sleeping outdoors, without access to food, showers,
bathrooms, and water.
We ask that you please donate what you can to the #LULACHelps: Wildfires
Relief Fund. Our Latino brothers and sisters need our help and every day, hour
and minute that passes makes the situation worse. It’s easy and simple to help
displaced families from home by visiting LULAC.org/wildfiresrelieffund.

Have you seen or heard about the #StopHateForProfit movement? It’s an effort
by over 1,200 companies and nonprofits demanding change from Facebook to
address hate and misinformation. Stop Hate For Profit was founded by some of
the most prominent civil rights groups and nonprofit organizations in the
country, and is joined by some of the most well-known brands in the world.
This week marks a series of virtual actions, and we hope you can join us in
calling out hate.
For the rest of this week, you can post a specific message about the harms that
Facebook has inflicted on our society and the importance of voting. Don’t
worry, we provide some example text you can use at stophateforprofit.org.
Today, we are asking people to join a 24-hour Instagram “Freeze”, in which
everyone will put up one message focusing on the damage Facebook does and
refrain from otherwise posting on Instagram for that day. Tomorrow, September
17th, everyone will share a post focused on how Facebook’s failures lead to
real-life violence and sow division, calling on the company to improve its
policies. The week of action will culminate on Friday, September 18th, when
we post about how Facebook spreads misinformation about the election and
urge people to vote and demand Facebook stop undermining our democracy.
The LULAC Federal Training Institute (FTI), The National Council of Hispanic
Employment Program Managers (NCHEPM), Leadership Consultants and
several Federal agencies have come together to coordinate and provide training
through the 2020 Virtual LULAC Federal Training Institute Partnership “A
Month of Development” for Federal employees and the community during
these challenging times. All this is free of charge and it’s an opportunity
attendees can enjoy thanks to the generosity, collaboration, and in-kind support
of all the partners.
