Integrated Systems Analysis – Coursework

Attempt all questions. Make sure any graphs or figures that are part of
your submission are clearly labelled.

1. (50 marks)

Engineering systems are generally complex with many interconnected

components.

Develop a model to show how the electrical system of a multi-engined

aircraft generates electrical power and delivers it to other aircraft
systems. The model is intended for the purpose of failure analysis of the
main system components. It should include a block diagram showing the
components and how they are interconnected.

You may wish to investigate the electrical systems of commercial aircraft,

but your model should not be based on a specific aircraft type.

Figure Q2.1 shows a system consisting of a mass, m resting on a smooth

horizontal surface. It is acted upon by an external force, f, and a spring
and damper:

Figure Q2.1: Mass, spring and damper

(a) This model may be simulated on Simulink as shown in Figure

Q2.2 below:

Figure Q2.2: Simulink model of mass, spring and damper

(i) Build this model in Simulink and enter the parameters

given below:

mass = 5000 kg; damping = 6 kNsm-1; spring constant

= 3.2 kNm-1

(ii) Apply a step input force of 1 kN. Run the model and
examine the output at the scope. Describe the system
output. (Include a graph of the scope in your answer.)

(iii) Add a new component to your model to make the

system critically damped. Do not change the current
values of the current parameters.

Print out diagrams of your model and output graphs. Label

these carefully.
(20 marks)
(b) Create a program in MATLAB (or any other similar software)
for the mass-spring damper model. Use the same parameter
values as in the Simulink model in part (a).

(i) Describe the system output. Include a printout of your

program listing and a graph of the system output in your
answer.

(ii) Compare the results of this MATLAB program with those

of the Simulink model.
(15 marks)

(c) Comment on the use of the Simulink and MATLAB models in

parts (a) and (b) above for the analysis of the motion of an
aircraft nosewheel as the aircraft touches down on the
runway. You may wish to discuss the aspects of the model
that are appropriate for this application, and any limitations or
deficiencies in the model.
