Information System
What is Information System?
 A set of interrelated components that process, store
and distribute information to support decision making
and control in an organization.
Types of Information System
 From Functional Perspective
– Sales Management
– Production Planning
– Accounting
– HR Management, etc.
 From Constituency Perspective
– Enterprise Support System (ESS)
– Decision Support System (DSS)
– Management Information System (MIS)
– Transaction Processing System (TPS)
Computer System
What is a Computer System?

As mentioned in the manual:

 Collection of some integrated components that works
to accomplish a specific task.

Little Revised:
 Collection of some integrated, logically related
components that works together to accomplish
programed computations helping to complete specific
tasks.
Properties of a Computer System
Must satisfy the following:
– Consists of several components
– Logical relations between (among) components
– Controlled in a way that a specific task is accomplished.
Components of a Computer System
 Hardware
– Motherboard
– Central Processing Unit (CPU)
– Random Access Memory (RAM)
– Basic Input Output System (BIOS)
– Power Supply
– Video Display/Processing Controller
– Compute Bus
– Drives (CDROM, DVD, Floppy, Hard Drive, SSD, USB, etc.)
Components of a Computer System
 Software
System Software
• System Management Software (OS, Network OS, DB)
• System Support Software (Utility, Performance Monitoring, Security)
• System Development Software (Programming Editor/IDE, Program
Translator, Computer Aided Software Engineering (CASE)
Application Software
• Word Processing, Spreadsheet, Database Management, Multimedia
• Enterprise Applications (ERP, CRM, WMS, HCM, etc.)
• Educational (CBT, Whiteboard, Treehouse, etc.)
• Simulation (3D Designers, Flight Simulation, etc.)
• Content Access Applications (e.g. web browser applications)
Components of a Computer System
Software types from Commercial Perspective
– Commercial Software
• Generally proprietary / copyrighted (e.g. MS Office)
• Can be downloadable (e.g. Adobe Acrobat Professional)
• Can be used over the cloud (e.g. MS Office 365)
– Freeware / Open Source Software
• Generally free and without support
• Sometimes can have price for any extended that becomes necessary
• Can be sometime limited featured
– Shareware Software
• Try before you buy
Components of a Computer System
 Human ware
– User Interface
– User Experience
– User Behavior
 Data / Information
– Firmware (e.g. BIOS)
Exam Questions
 What is Information System? Classify Information
System.
 What is Computer System? What are the components?
 What is Software? Classify according to working
principles / commercial perspective.
 What is shareware?
 What is firmware?
