CHAPTER I

PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

This chapter contains discussions about the background of the study, statement of the

problem, significance of the study, and scope and delimitations of the study.

A. INTRODUCTION

School violence has been an important topic in the realm of education in the last decade,

and many different acts of violence in schools have been witnessed. School violence is a major

issue that needs to be stopped immediately.  School violence not only disrupts a child’s learning

environment, it also becomes troublesome for principals, students, teacher and parents.  It also

deprives a child from having a bright future.  Instead of spending time studying, children are

paying more attention towards certain kinds of negative attitude.  Children learn to use weapons

in schools, they bully and threaten other students, and they even start fights with teachers and

student.  Such is the true face of school violence.

Both parents and the school administration should exert efforts in correcting such violent

behavior among students.  The question is how can we prevent such incidents of school violence

from occurring?  As history has taught us, violence is not a kind of problem that can be solved

with strength alone.  Violence in itself is considered to be in a person’s nature, and one knows

that this can’t be change instantly.  The only and sure way to reduce such violent behavior is to

give proper guidance, support and love to children.

Preventing or reducing violence can be done in a number of various ways.  Among these,

the most important in stopping school violence is security.  It is not entirely impossible to put a

stop to school violence.  If both the parents and the school work together in providing proper

guidance to children, all the while grooming them with the right attitude and proper career, then

certainly school violence will be just a thing of the past.

Many studies although differ from one another indicates that one of the factors that

prevents the safety and acquisition of full potential of a student is school violence. One of the

causes of school violence in the Philippines is the Filipino’s value of “pakikisama” which occur

in school environment when a student in the act being united with their peers is pressured to do

the same violent behavior as their peers that causes violence against their other classmates. It

starts with “pakikisalamuha” or act of mixing in which they acquire the same violent trait their

peers possesses, then “pakikilahok” or act of joining in which they manifest the same violent

actions that their friends do such as bullying others then “pakikibagay” or act of conformity with

their peers in which they acquire the negative behavior of their friends.

This study focuses on the school counselor‘s role as a responsive leader in school

violence prevention and crisis intervention. In particular, this study will address the school

counselor’s involvement with bullying and harassment programs and prevention efforts. Further,

we will also explore intervention programs, such as the school crisis response team, and the

school counselor’s potential for involvement with crisis intervention.

Bullying is one of the major causes for violence in school. With the help of power,

students go off their limits to seek fun. This 5 minutes fun can be dangerous if done in wrong

sense. Bullying a person at a young age leaves disturbing behavior at the end. The child is no

where ready to face the world at times. Adequate attention should be given by school authorities

in such matters. Home support should be there with bullied person. This is to ensure that he or

she is not alone if something bad has happened.

Punishing the bullying person will not help. At times if the bullying person lacks in

maturity there are chances where he can go to any extent. This happens when there is lacking of

maturity in the bullying individual. If there is no sense and presence of mind in the bullying
person then he can go in the other direction which is unthinkable. He can react in angry manner

which will result use of power for violence. It will disturb others in different manner which can

be very hard to forget mentally. He can vent out his anger in physical manner.

The effects of school violence are that we know relatively little about the effect that witnessing

school violence has on the psycho-social adjustment of young people. Yet, some recent research

tells us that kids needn't be the perpetrators or victims of violence to be affected by it.

B. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

During my research, I found out several specific problems that arise from the

general problem and these are the following:

a. What are the causes of school violence?

b. What are the causes and effects of the school violence?

c. How to Prevent School Violence?

d. What are the crisis interventions of School Violence?

C. SIGNIFICANCE OF STUDY

Research today bridges the world of ideals to real-life situations. This study aimed

to be significant to the following:

School. This study will help the school to prevent such incidents of school violence from

occurring. Schools should be equipped with proper security details along with a good ratio of

guards-to-students. These guards are responsible for watching over the students and ensuring

over-all safety within the school.  This can be achieved by conducting regular checks of student’s

lockers and bags.  In an event that a guard finds any kind of suspicious object or weapon on a

student, they should report it to higher authorities while taking a strict and firm action against it.
Teachers. This study will help the teachers to know what the ways to prevent violation inside

the classroom. Thus, they will realize how important to have discipline inside the classroom.

Students. This study will help the students to be more disciplinary and know the things they

need to understand, when it comes to school violation.

Future Researcher. This research can serve as an inspiration and basis for future researchers if

they would like to conduct studies related to this subject matter.

D. SCOPE AND DELIMITATION OF THE STUDY

This research will give information and statistics regarding to The School Violence

Prevention and Crisis Intervention. This research is Limited to Third Year Students of Muzon

High School. The researcher conduct a questionnaire to the students.

There are five objectives this study addresses. They are: To examine school violence. To

research selected preventions and interventions. To identify how schools use preventions and

interventions. To formulate recommendations to schools and educators in the use of selected

Preventions and intervention strategies.
