Unusual meetings
Ruth:
'I met my partner Duncan at my aunt's funeral last winter. After the funeral, my mother invited friends and
family to have tea and some sandwiches at her house. I was speaking to my cousin when I noticed a guy I didn't
know standing in the corner of the room. He was by far the best looking man in the room! I felt quite brave, so I
decided to go over to speak to him. We chatted and I discovered he wasn't related to me. There was an instant
chemistry - we clicked straight away. We exchanged mobile numbers and said goodbye. That night, we met up
in secret. We had to see each other again. It was difficult because we were both going out with other people at
the time! After a few months, we both split up from our partners. We got married almost immediately.'
Toby:
'I met Penny at the local zoo. I was watching the monkeys playing around when I noticed her. Penny was
dancing around like the monkeys, imitating them from the other side of the glass. It was hilarious and really
made me laugh out loud. I was laughing so much that she came over to me and said, 'Hi, do you want a
banana?'. I laughed again, and we started talking. We got on really well and laughed even more. She was on her
own, so I asked her if she would like to visit the rest of the zoo with me. Penny said yes and that was the start of
our long relationship; we've been together for 10 years now. We visit our friends at the zoo every year to
celebrate the place where we first met.'

'It was New Year's Eve, about three years ago, when I first met Sam at a nightclub in town. I was dancing when
suddenly he came up to me and started dancing with me. Sam introduced himself and asked me if I would like a
drink. I said no. Sam was really offended and walked away. I thought he was too outgoing and trendy for me.
Also, at the time I was interested in another guy. About six months later, I was walking out of the door of my
building when I saw Sam again. He was carrying lots of boxes. He was moving into the apartment next door. I
couldn't believe it! As time went by, we started speaking to each other. Eventually, we became good, close
friends. So close that today we're engaged!

The democratization of music?

The internet has opened the door to the next stage in the evolution of our music experience. Our horizons have been
broadened. Now, we constantly discover and share new music. Things used to be different. In the old days, spending
hours listening to radio stations or browsing stores were the only ways to get to know new music.
Record companies had total control over what we heard and bought, and a handful of megastars made billions. These
days, the internet allows anybody who can sing and play the guitar free distribution. However, this has also led to
mass piracy of music and, according to the record companies, is the main cause of a big decline in CD sales in recent
years. While the music industry claims that millions are lost due to file-sharing and piracy, a number of recent studies
challenge this claim. In fact, most artists - around 75% - actually benefit from file-sharing according to a Harvard
study carried out in 2004.
It is true that an elite group of top artists have seen a reduction in record sales in recent years, but many less well-
known artists have had the opportunity to present themselves to the world and to sell their music. We used to have to
pay for all our music 15 years ago, but, today, a great deal of music is available for free on the internet. The fact that
people can discover new songs and artists by listening to free music often helps, rather than hinders, music sales. File-
sharing sites have become the best 'shop windows' when looking for new music. If people like what they sample, they
are more likely to buy it. In fact, even the big record companies often offer free downloads so that people can preview
new songs and artists. Further, if you are not supported by a big record label, the internet allows you to reach a mass
audience independently. We have seen many young bands become successful in recent years because they have built a
fan base through the free distribution of their music online. As the balance of power moves in favour of the consumer,
and away from the big record companies, is this the democratization of music that we are experiencing?

1. The distribution of music in the past was limited. (T/F)

2. Recent research shows that music sales have decreased because
of file-sharing. (T/F)
3. Unlike less well-known artists, superstars have seen a decrease in music
sales. (T/F)
4. People who listen to music for free never go on to buy it.
(T/F)
5. The writer suggests that music has become more democratic for artists
and the consumer. (T/F)
