Unusual meetings
Ruth:
'I met my partner Duncan at my aunt's funeral last winter. After the funeral, my mother invited friends and
family to have tea and some sandwiches at her house. I was speaking to my cousin when I noticed a guy I didn't
know standing in the corner of the room. He was by far the best looking man in the room! I felt quite brave, so I
decided to go over to speak to him. We chatted and I discovered he wasn't related to me. There was an instant
chemistry - we clicked straight away. We exchanged mobile numbers and said goodbye. That night, we met up
in secret. We had to see each other again. It was difficult because we were both going out with other people at
the time! After a few months, we both split up from our partners. We got married almost immediately.'
Toby:
'I met Penny at the local zoo. I was watching the monkeys playing around when I noticed her. Penny was
dancing around like the monkeys, imitating them from the other side of the glass. It was hilarious and really
made me laugh out loud. I was laughing so much that she came over to me and said, 'Hi, do you want a
banana?'. I laughed again, and we started talking. We got on really well and laughed even more. She was on her
own, so I asked her if she would like to visit the rest of the zoo with me. Penny said yes and that was the start of
our long relationship; we've been together for 10 years now. We visit our friends at the zoo every year to
celebrate the place where we first met.'

Write an informal email to one of your class mates. You have had an idea! You want
to organise an end-of-year event for everyone in your English class. Make some suggestions as to what you can
do; for example, a picnic, an excursion, goes to a restaurant, etc. Suggest when and where you think the event
should take place. Ask your class mate for his/her opinion on your idea.
