POST GRADUATE CERTIFICATE IN ENDODONTICS

(PGCE)
Introduction
The Post Graduate Certificate in Endodontics is a programme of one year duration. It is
aimed at BDS/MDS doctors. This programme is specially designed to improve the skill
of learners in Endodontics. In this course the knowledge is imparted through the subject
matter written by the top clinicians of the country, who are sharing their experiences
about their own cases with you.

Endodontics is a clinical science, the more you practice ,the more you come across
situations which tests your skill. The programme will brief you about all the aspects of
endodontics which are imperative for know while practicing.

Objectives

Broad objectives are to:

• Improve the day to day working in Endodontics
• Provide details of all the common procedures and ideal way of working
• Provide ways to solve the problems encountered
• Provide knowledge about advanced procedures in Endodontics.

Eligibility: BDS (DCI recognised) after completion of internship

Duration: Minimum 1 year; Maximum 3 year

Admission fee: Rs.1,20,000 /-

No of seats: 7 to 8 students per centre

Admission Procedure
Admission in this programme will be on the basis of an entrance exam which will be
held once in a year. Selected candidates will then be called for centralized counseling and
seats will be allotted on merit basis after applying the reservation policy of IGNOU.

Implementation
The students are required to attend the training spells at the identified / allotted dental
colleges designated as programme study centres (PSC). At PSC’s, the hands on training
will be of 30 days duration which will be completed in 5 spells (contact sessions) of 6
days each. The PSC’s are free to decide the timing of the contact sessions according to
the mutual convenience of institution and the students.
In addition to PSC, students will also be required to select a work place where they can
work in between different contact sessions. Work place is the set up where a student
works normally. This may be a Primary Health Centre (PHC); his own clinic or any other
health set up in private/government sector. If the requisites in terms of number and the
types of patients and facilities to perform the expected practicals are not available at the
normal place of your work, then he/she is at a liberty to select a place where they could
work to fulfill the requirements for your practical activities.

Programme Structure
The PGCE programme consists of five courses. Three are theory courses and two
practical courses.

The courses are designed on the basis of learning hours required by an average student.
As mentioned above, one credit represents 30 hours of learning. The design of the PGCE

Examination and Evaluation

The students are expected to pass each of the components of theory and the practical
separately. The two components are continuous/internal evaluation and term end
evaluation. The minimum pass percentage for each component is fifty per cent. In the
theory and practical, weight age for continuous evaluation is thirty per cent and for Term
End Examination is seventy per cent The internal assessment of the theory as well as
practical component will be done by the counselors located at the PSC. The Counselors
and Programme in charge will make an objective and subjective assessment of student’s
understanding of knowledge and performance of skill for both theory and practical

PROGRAMME STUDY CENTRE GUIDELINES

(Post Graduate Certificate in Endodontics)

Definition of Programme Study Centre (PSC)

A Study Centre established for providing necessary student support services for the
programme of Post Graduate Certificate in Endodontics.

Location of PSC
A Programme Study Centre can be in an Institution/Organization, which possesses:

1. Necessary infrastructure facility and academic expertise as per the school’s programme’s
requirement for the conduct of academic support services and,

2. Willing to provide those facilities for the use of IGNOU students on mutually agreed
terms.

For the programme of Post Graduate Certificate in Endodontics (PGCE) a programme

study centre will be located in a Dental college and having following requirement:

• A recognized Dental College with basic infrastructure.

• Having MDS course in Conservative and Endodontics Dentistry
• Person heading the department should be a full time Professor. The department
should have adequate subordinate staff and clinical faculties available as per DCI
norms.
• Library with Internet facility, which should be open to IGNOU students.

Infrastructure facilities in PSC

A programme study centre will have the following facilities:

1. One to two rooms for the exclusive use of the study centre.
2. Rooms or Halls furnished for conducting counselling sessions/examinations on
Sundays and Holidays.
3. Audio visual facilities, like TV, VCD etc for using the audio and video cassettes of
IGNOU.
4. Library with Internet facilities, which should be open to IGNOU students.

Procedure for establishment

The following steps will be followed for establishing a Programme Study Centre:
1. The basic information about the host institution to be provided by the head of the
institution in the prescribed proforma (Appendix – 1).
2. On receipt of the above information, school faculty/ the Regional Director will
visit the institution and hold discussions with the head of the institution and the
management (wherever necessary). After due consultation with the school, the
Regional Director will execute an M.O.U. with the host institution. (Appendix –2)
3. The academic counsellors for PSC will submit their bio data in a structured
proforma (Appendix 3). They will be issued appointment letters only after the school
approves their names to RSD. The eligibility criteria for the academic counsellors is
provided in Appendix 4.
4. The head of the department should preferably be included as one of the
counsellors for the respective discipline.
5. A notification will be issued from the RSD after the appointment of the
Programme – in – charge.
Staffing pattern

The Programme Study Centre will be managed by a part-time Programme In-charge

(PIC). The terms and conditions for the PIC will be as follows:
1. The Programme In-charge will be appointed by IGNOU in consultation with the Head
of the Host Institution and Director, School of Health Sciences. The person
recommended should be an approved counselor for the programme and is a regular
employee of the host institution.
2. The Programme In-charge will be the overall in-charge of the Programme Study
Centre and will be responsible and accountable for all the activities of IGNOU in
respect of the given programme. He will report to the concerned Regional Director
and/or the School of Health Sciences as per programme details.
3. For appointment/renewal of the tenure of Programme In-charge, it is essential that
his/her tenure in the parent office continue beyond the respective calendar year
(January to December).
4. The Programme In-charge will be paid lump sum amount for secretarial assistance on
per student basis.

Functions

The Programme Study Centre will perform the following functions:

1) Organize counselling and Audio-visual sessions.
2) Arrange practical sessions, demonstrations etc. as per programme requirements.
3) Receive assignments from students, get them evaluated by approved counselors,
send feedback to students and send the marks to SR&E Division and the Regional
Centre.
4) Maintain records of activities and accounts.
5) Send regular feedback reports to the Regional Centre/School of Health Sciences.
6) Provide information about IGNOU and its programmes.
7) Generate bio-data of academic counselors and forward them to the Regional
Director for their part-time appointment as academic counselors.

Enrolment

The Programme Study Centre will have maximum student strength of 6.

Funding
Regional centre will provide advance money to the Programme Study Centre for
expenditures as per IGNOU norms and will monitor the expenses. The payment norms
are mentioned in the appendix-5 which will be subject to changes from time to time as
decided by IGNOU.

The Programme In-charge will open an account in the name of “IGNOU” for financial
transactions. Whenever the PIC gets transferred from the institution having PSC, the
next PIC (to be decided as per laid down norm) will be handed over the accounts.The
Programme In-charge will be given an honorarium per month and conveyance as
applicable to the type of city.

Academic Counsellors will be paid honorarium towards each of the activities e.g.
counseling, practical training, evaluation of assignments, log-books, etc. separately as per
the laid down norms.

Expenditure towards stationary, postage, telephone etc. will be reimbursed as per IGNOU
norms.

Reimbursement of contingent expenses related to the programme implementation as per

the guidelines.

To meet the expenditure on secretarial assistance, the programme study centre will be
paid a lumpsum amount per annum at the rate of Rs.5000/-.

The Programme In-charge will maintain accounts and submit the expenditure statement
to the Regional Centre by the 5th of every month in the prescribed proforma.
