1. a) Design and draw a cast iron protected type flange coupling to connect two shafts of 36mm 12
diameter transmitting 16kW at 700rpm. The overload capacity is 1.2 times the average
torque. The following permissible stresses may be used.
Shear stress for shaft, bolt and keys are 60N/mm2.
Crushing stress is 150N/mm2.
Shear stress for flange is 10 N/mm2.

b) A ball bearing carrying a load of radial force 2500N and thrust load of 1500N is servicing 8
40hrs per week for three years, speed of the shaft is 1000 rpm. Determine suitable size of
rolling contact bearing, Diameter of shaft is 45mm.

2. a) A cast iron flywheel running at an average speed of 150rpm is to store an energy 3000 N-m 10
in each revaluation with an allowable fluctuation of 20% in the speed. If the diameter of
flywheel is limited to 1200mm, determine the rim dimensions and stresses in the flywheel.

b) Design a journal bearing for the crank shaft of 4-stroke petrol engine to carry a radial load 10
of 10kN. The journal diameter is 50mm and it rotates at 1000 rpm. SAE 30 oil map be used.

3. a) A 18kW is to be transmitted from 870rpm motor to a centrifugal pump running at 290 rpm 16
through the leather belt laced with wire by hand. The diameters of pulley on motor shaft is
300mm. If Centre distance between pulleys is 1500mm, select the suitable leather belt and
design the pulley on the pump shaft.

b) On what factors belt drive are selected? 4

4. a) Design V-belt drive required to transmit 16kW power to a compressor. The motor rpm is 10
1440 and speed reduction ratio is 3:6. (Pulley design in not expected).

b) Select a suitable chain drive to transmit 12kW from a electric motor to a line shaft. Motor 10
shaft diameter is 48mm, motor rpm is 1200 rpm and rpm of line shaft is 250 rpm, and the
Centre distance is adjustable from 600mm. Service is 10 hrs/day, 6 days per week. Good
lubrication condition is expected.

5. Design the 20º full depth teeth of a pair of spur gears to transmit a smooth continuous load 20
of 25kW at 1440 rpm. The drive should be as compact as possible with a speed reduction
of 3:1. The gear and pinion are made of steel with proper heat treatment. Specify the heat
treatment.

6. a) Design a worm gear speed reducer to transmit 22.5kW at 1440 rmp. The desired speed ratio 16
is 24:1 and efficiency is 85%. Assume that worm is made of hardened steel and gear of
phosphor bronze.

b) Explain in brief various types of gear teeth failure. 4

7. a) Design a suitable wire rope to lift a load of 10kN of debris from a well 60m deep. The rope 16
should have factor of safety equal to 6. The weight of bucket is 5kN. The load is lifted at
150m/min attained in 5 sec.

b) Differentiate between clutches and brakes. 4

8. a) An automotive type clutch has inside and outside diameters of 150 and 225 mm respectively. 16
Clamping force is provided by nine springs, each compressed 6.5mm to give a force of
625N when the clutch is new. The Moulded friction material provides a conservatively
estimated coefficient of friction is 0.35. The maximum engine torque is 280 N-m.
a) What is the safety with respect to slippage of a brand new clutch?

b) What is the safety factor initial wear has occurred?

c) How much wear of the friction material can take place before the clutch will slip?

d) Design the spring for the clutch.

b) Explain internally expanding brake and derive the expression to determine the braking 4
torque.

b) Design a helical gear drive to transmit the power of 15 kW between two line shafts. The 16
driving line shaft is rotating at 600 rpm and driven shaft has to rotate 200 rpm. The drive
is subjected to medium shock loads and it is operating for 8 hrs/day.

shaft is rotating at 800 rpm and driven shaft should rotate at 200 rpm. The angle betn the
shafts is 60º. This drive is subjected to moderate shock load and operating for 8 hrs/day.

7. a) State various types of brakes. Also state their advantages & application. 7

b) Design a multiple plate clutch to transmit the power of 15 kW at 1500 rpm betn J.C. 10
Engine & line shaft. Assume suitable data.

c) State the applications of plate clutches. 3

1. a) Design a bushed-pin type flexible coupling to connect a pump shaft to motor shaft 12
transmitting 30kW at 950 rpm. The overall torque is 20% more than the mean torque. The
material properties are as follows:-
i) The allowable shear and crushing stress for shaft and key material is 40 Mpa and
80 Mpa respectively
ii) The allowable shear stress for C.I is 15Mpa.
iii) The allowable bearing pressure for rubber bush is 0.8 Mpa.
iv) The material of pin is same as that of the shaft and key.

b) A shaft running at 1200 rpm is supported in Deep groove ball bearing carries a radial load 8
of 3.5 kN and thrust load of 1.5 kN. The loading can be assumed as moderate shock load. It
is operated for 40 hrs/week for 3.5 years. The probability of failure is 2% Assuming suitable
data, select suitable size of ball bearing for the shaft diameter of 50mm.

2. a) What is the function of flywheel ? Why the flywheel used in moving vehicle engine is 4
lighter than the flywheel used in stationary engine.

b) Design a C.I. Flywheel for 4-stroke I.C. engine developing 40KW at 800 rpm. The 16
fluctuation of speed is limited to 4% of mean speed. The work done during power stroke is
1.3 times, work done during whole cycle. Design also shaft hub, and determine type of
construction for flywheel.

3. Design a V-belt drive, which transmits power of 15kW at 1500 rpm. to a m/c spindle 20
running at 3000 rpm. Design also the shaft and larger pulley. (Including type of
construction) Assume suitable data.

4. Design a helical gear drive, in which pinion running at 900 rpm. transmitter power of 4kW 20
to a gear running at 450rpm. Assume suitable material for gear and pinion. The drive is
subjected to medium shock, working for 24 hr/day. Also design a shaft and gear blank for
larger gear.

5. Design completely roller chain drive to transmit 8kW between two line shafts The driving 20
shaft rotates at 950 rpm and driven shaft rotates at 350 rpm. The drive is supposed to operate
for 24 hours/day.

6. Design a worm gear drive to transmit the power of 18kW with medium shock load. The 20
speed of worm is 1420 rpm and speed of gear is 42 rpm. Assume suitable material for worm
and gear.
(Design of gear blank, not expected)

7. a) Design a suitable wire rope for elevator in a building 160m high to lift a total weight of 16
32kN. The desired speed of elevator is 5.5 m/sec and full speed must be reached in 7.5
second. Also design a drum and sheave.

b) Explain the construction of wire rope. What wire rope of (7X20) designates. 4

8. a) Explain the working of 'single plate clutch' with neat sketch. 8

b) A cone clutch is to be designed to transmit 8kw at 920 rpm. The cone has face angle of 12º. 12
The width of face is half of the mean radius and normal pressure between the contact faces
is not to exceed 0.09 Mpa. Assuming U.W.C. and coeff of friction between contact faces as
0.2, find the main dimensions of the cone clutch. Also find axial force required to engage
the clutch.

1. a) Design a protected type rigid flange coupling used to transmit the power of 35 kw at 960 14
rpm from one shaft to another. The load factor for this application is 1.4. Assume suitable
material.

b) A deep groove ball bearing is subjected to radial load of 8 kN and thrust load of 3 kN. The 6
shaft rotates at 1000 rpm. The expected life of the bearing is 22,000 Hours. The minimum
expected shaft diameter is 60 mm. Select suitable ball bearing.

2. a) Design a flywheel for single cylinder four stroke I.C. Engine developing the power of 65 16
kw at 1200 rpm. The work done during the power stroke is 1.35 times the work done during
the whole cycle. The coefficient of steadiness is 10.

b) State and explain the application of Flywheel. 4

3. a) Design a V-Belt drive to transmit the power of 2.2 kw from electrical motor to the step 16
pulley of the Lathe machine. The electric motor speed is 1500 rpm and step pulley speed

with the velocity of 8 meters per minute. The final velocity is to be achieved in 5 seconds.
The slack present in the rope may be considered as 1% of the height through which the load
is lifted.

b) State the various materials used for brake lining. 4

1. a) Design and draw a protective type of cast iron flange coupling 8


for a steel shaft transmitting 15kw at 200rpm and having an
allowable shear stress of 40MPa. The working stress in the bolts
should not exceed 30MPa. Assume that the same material is
used for shaft and key and the crushing stress is twice the value
of its shear stress. The maximum torque is 25% greater than the
full load torque. The shear stress for cast iron is 14MPa.

b) A punching machine makes 25 working strokes per minute and is 12


capable of punching 25mm diameter holes in 18mm thick steel
plates having an ultimate shear strength of 300MPa. The
punching operation takes place during 1/10 th of a revolution of
the Crank shaft. Estimate the power needed for the driving motor,
assuming mechanical efficiency of 95%. Determine suitable
dimensions for the rim cross-section of the flywheel, which is to
revolve at 9 times the speed of the crank shaft. The permissible
coefficient of fluctuation of speed is 0.1. The flywheel is to be
made of cast iron having a working stress (tensile) of 6MPa and
density of 7250kg/m 3 . The diameter of the flywheel must not
exceed 1.4m owing to space restrictions. The hub and the spokes
may be assumed to provide 5% of the rotational inertia of the
wheel. Check for the centrifugal stress induced in the rim.

torque is 20% more than the mean torque. The material

ii) The allowable shear stress for cast iron is 15MPa.
iii) The allowable bearing pressure for rubber bush is 0.8 N mm2 .
iv) The material of the pin is same as that of shaft and key.

b) A bearing supporting a 1000 rpm shaft carries a 3KN radial load 8


and a 1KN thrust load. The loading can be assumed as moderate
shock load. The required life is 5000 hr with only 2 percent
probability of failure. Select a 300 series ball bearing for this
application.

3. a) Two parallel shaft whose centre lines are 4.8m apart, are 10
connected by an open belt drive. The diameter of the larger pulley
is 1.5m and that of smaller pulley 1m. The initial tension in the
belt when stationary is 3KN. The mass of the belt is 1.5Kg/m
length. The coefficient of friction between the belt and the pulley
is 0.3. Taking centrifugal tension into account, calculate the
power transmitted, when the smaller pulley rotates at 400 r pm.

b) Two shafts whose centers are 1 meter apart are connected by a 10


V-belt drive. The driving pulley is supplied with 95kw power and
has an effective diameter of 300mm. It runs at 1000rpm. While
the driven pulley runs at 375 rpm. The angle of groove on the
pulleys is 40º. Permissible tension in 400mm 2 cross sectional area
belt is 2.1MPa. The material of the belt has density of 1100kg/m 3 .
The driven pulley is overhang, the distance of the centre from the
nearest bearing being 200mm. The coefficient of friction between
belt and pulley rim is 0.28. Estimate : (i) The number of belts
required; and (ii) Diameter of driven pulley shaft; if permissible
shear stress is 42MPa.

4. Design a chain drive to transmit 7kw power between two line 20


shaft. The driving shaft rotates at 900rpm and driven shaft rotates
at 300rpm. The drive is supposed to operate for 16hrs/day.

5. Design a spur gear drive between two line shaft. The driving shaft 20
rotates at 900rpm whereas driven shaft rotates at 300rpm. The
power to be transmitted is 10kw. The drive is operating 24hrs/day,
and it is subjected to heavy shock.

6. An elevator cage is lifted at the rate of 100m/min. The elevator 20
drum diameter is 600mm and the load to be lifted is 20kN. The
worm gear is keyed to the drum shaft. The elevator is driven by
an electric motor running at 960rpm.
Determine :
i) The worm and worm gear proportions.
ii) The temperature rise of the oil and
iii) The required power of the motor if the efficiency of the hoist
is 94 percent.
7. a) A plate clutch has three discs on the driving shaft and two discs 10
on the driven shaft, providing four pairs of contact surfaces. The
outside diameter of the contact surfaces is 240mm and inside
diameter 120mm. Assuming uniform pressure and   0.3 , find the
total spring load pressing the plates together to transmit 25kw at
1575r.p.m. If there are 6 springs each of sti teness 13KN/m and
each of the contact surfaces has worn away by 1.25mm, find the
maximum power that can be transmitted, assuming uniform wear.
b) A cone clutch is to be designed to transmit 7.5kw at 900rpm. The 10
cone has a face angle of 12º. The width of the face is half of the
mean radius and the normal pressure between the contact faces
is not to exceed 0.09 N mm2 . Assuming uniform wear and the
coefficient of friction between the contact faces as 0.2. Find the
main dimensions of the clutch and the axial force required to
engage the clutch.

8. a) A rope drum of an elevator having 650mm diameter is fitted with 10
a brake drum of 1m diameter. The brake drum is provided with
four cast iron brake shoes each subtending an angle of 45º. The
mass of the elevator when loaded is 2000kg and moves with a
speed of 2.5m/s. The brake has a sufficient cap acity to stop the
elevator in 2.75metres. Assuming the coefficient of friction
between the brake drum and shoes as 0.2, find (i) width of the
shoe, if the allowable pressure on the brake shoe is limited to
0.3 N mm 2 ; and (ii) heat generated in stopping the elevator.

b) Determine the size of special flexible 6  37 wire rope and the 10


drum diameter required for an elevator in a building 120m tall for
a load of 20KN. Assume a maximum rope speed of 300m/min and
an acceleration of 2m sec 2 when starting with no slack. According
to law not less than four ropes must be used. If there is a slack of
1 percent, what is the safety factor during starting.
