The rising market of branded and readymade clothes in the city has pushed the tailors and
tailoring shops on the verge of getting vanished.
The major tailors are somehow surviving with their regular customers, the smaller ones
are the worst suffers. Many have already shifted to other trades and some are still trying
to figure out as what to do for the daily bread as they have dedicated their whole life in
this trade and they see a really dark future.
The readymade shops are not the only challenge that they have to face. The non-
availability of the skilled workers and the raw material is also a major problem.
Since the future is dark, there are no new people coming into this trade and the old
workers are now shifting to other trades. These days, the showrooms have their own
tailoring and alteration set up which means that most of the customers get all the facilities
under one roof which prevents them to walk into the tailoring shops. This is also one of
the reasons which are hampering the tailoring business.
The ladies tailoring shops are comparatively in a better position as the market rises in the
wedding season when the demand of suits and other items increases. There are various
women who work from home in most of the localities. Tailoring has become their source
of income and makes them self-dependent.
The condition of tailoring houses is better in other countries. Jay Rodrigues, an American
student in the city, says that tailoring houses are considered to be for the elite class as
these deliver quality and perfection. The commoners cannot afford to get specially
ordered clothes. Students from Russia, Denmark, Japan and Spain agree.
1.1 Objectives of the Study
The reports objective to be classified into General objectives and Specific objectives.
They are given below:
General objective
Specific objective
To achieve our main objective, the following specific objectives are taken for the study
effectively:
To know about the current and future problems and prospects of tailoring shop in
Sylhet .
To make some recommendations on how to solve the problems and improve the
atmosphere for Fashion House business for a better and stabilized economy
1.2 Methodology
This assignment is based on survey questionnaire and secondary information. For the
purpose of getting better result simple random sampling technique during the survey of
this assignment was adopted where tailoring business owners were given the copies of
the questionnaire and were asked to fill them. Moreover, some secondary data was also
collected for completion of the report.
Data Collection Technique
Primary Sources
Secondary Sources
In this research, we are going to find out the problems faced by the tailoring shop through
extended marketing mix. This would be a quantitative study.
1.4 Sampling
The tailors shop will be selected by simple random probability. Out of the many owners
of tailor business, 30 of them are selected.
The scope of the study is limited to organizational setup, functions, and performances
Since tailoring business is still in its growth stage in Bangladesh; it has still to go a long
way to achieve its destination by working on the problems encountered and improving
them. The report will mainly focus on the problems is facing by the tailoring business and
how they are coping with these problems in the perspective of extended marketing mix.
1.6 Limitation
The assignment was basically based on interpreting primary data. Secondary data also
needed for analyzing future plans, but for the purpose of the betterment of the present
position.
We won’t say that our study and the decisions we made are self sufficient. That doesn’t
mean that there was any dearth of professionalism and eagerness to reach to the solution,
rather it means that we had to face some obstacles. Those were as follows:
Respondents were sometimes reluctant to fill the questionnaire and they weren’t
interested to express their honest opinion, which has impeded the preparation of
the report.
Because of the resource/budget constraint survey as per the sample size was not
possible which has restricted the accuracy of the result.
In this study, primary data have been recorded about a few number of people
because of time limitation, it was difficult to demonstrate the opinion of mass
people.
The time limit was also a fact because at same time we are doing our classes, other
assignments. So, it was quite hard to keep everything at a run.
Chapter 2: Literature Review
The problems and prospects of tailoring shop is an important issue for growing market of
Sylhet city in tailoring business. To get a clear idea about this subject, the definite area is
the deep analysis of the obtained information from books, newspapers, journals,
articles, prospectus, individuals’ research and internet. Basically any type of study, thesis
or research is made on the basis of acquired information from two main sources. There
are primary and secondary sources. In case of our research about "Tailoring Business in
Sylhet: Problems & Prospects”, we studied relative journals and news paper reports and
so on. On the other hands, information and data are collected from different tailors shop
(owners and employees). In order to make the study effective and meaningful, sufficient
numbers of graphs are added there on. On that collected papers, we find out various
information about tailoring shop in Sylhet. Some information is about opening a tailoring
business, some about what should remember to start a tailoring, some information about
managing a tailoring shop, some about increasing profit, some information about
goodwill, some about problems and prospects. In Bangladesh, the garments sector grew
rapidly over the last several years for a lower cost of production and for other facilities.
Bangladesh has now emerged as a reliable ready made garment-sourcing destination for
leading global retailers, due to its competitive prices. International buyers of apparel
items now seek innovative designs from the local suppliers and manufacturers as the
demand for handmade clothes. So traditional Bangladeshi designs are becoming popular
in the Western countries. In that case, some tailoring business has established in Sylhet as
like Cambridge Tailors, Studio Stitch, Lady fair, Ojanta Tailors etc.

3.2 Findings
We had assumed that the key informants should be interviewed in the form of questionnaire in
order to asses first track information. So we prepared some Questionnaire which you can see at
the last part of this report. We asked some owners, employees & customers to fill up these
questionnaires. After analyzing all the data & opinions, we came to know these important
information about tailoring business in Sylhet :
Most of the businesses do not have any specific or unique strategy to grow up and capture
the market which indicates the inexperience and lack of proper business knowledge of the
entrepreneurs.
of sufficient investments.
There is lack of proper training programs for the employees. In most cases they
are ill-paid though they provide 60 or more hours service a week. This makes the
As most of the tailoring shop does not have any specific marketing strategy it fails
There should be sufficient financial investment to start and continue the business
activities as planned.
The tailor master should be conscious about the fashion and choice of all types of
customers.
There is main objection of the customer is the rough behavior of the employees;
so it should be removed by recruiting educated and good employees. It also
removed by giving them proper training.
Most of the employees are ill paid though they work 10 to 12 hours each day and
six days in a week. Owner should properly pay and grant needed leave to them.
