The Islamic Roots of the Modern Pharmacy and Hospital

David W. Tschanz in is articles exposes the audience to the work done in medicine by

Muslims. The root of curing diseases and studying poison was progressing in the Muslim

community in the West and the Middle East. During medieval Islam, there were many diseases

that were not curable and people ought to die because there was no medicine. Also, Prophet

Muhammad mentioned that God has provided a cure for every disease. This left a message for

the Muslims to find the cures. They started studying different chemicals as deaths from poison

were incurable. The research of medieval Islam was extensive than that of medieval Europe.

Pharmacies were opened where only legible individuals belonging to a medical background were

allowed to participate. Also, in the meanwhile, the place to hold sick people were still not

permanent. Muslims as per their faith made their goal to provide medical services and cures for

sick people. They started building hospitals that provided space for the movement of light and

air. Tschanz mentions this as “supported treatment according to humoral, a system of medicine

concerned with corporal rather than spiritual balance. They provide sick people with a healthy

environment in order to cure them. It was the medieval Islam that was supplying information and

ideas to Europe via different crusader kingdoms. Many texts in Greek were translated into

Arabic which was then studied by the Muslims and in the end, many discoveries were made.

Building hospitals and pharmacies provided a strong structure for medical research.

Things were organized and the sick people actually had a place where they can get relief from

the pain. By providing pharmacies, only the right medicine was issued after checking the ill
person for the disease. The person in charge of pharmacy was selected after passing tests of

medical information. The opening of hospitals and pharmacies opened the doors for further

research. Anyone who wanted to come to the pharmaceutical industry had to bring his research

or any recommendations or views on secondary research. After only that, they were given a

license through which they could sell medicines and helps sick people cure. Whereas the

hospitals were a source of a medical library for hundreds of students and teachers who were

practicing medicine. What today’s medical centers have gained is only because of the research

and efforts of medieval Islam. The world was convinced to open up dispensaries in the major

sectors of the cities so that any emergency case can be taken care of without any hassle.

Arab scholars were at the peak of research in medicine and mathematics. Their work was

influenced throughout the world which spread from the Arab continent to Europe. With

information coming from Greek, they expanded their knowledge by translating the work first in

Persian and then to Arabic. The period of Prophet Muhammad advanced the power of the

Muslims and they spread throughout the world. With reading the Quran, Arabs developed a trend

of thinking and started searching for answers. Currently, we are exposed to the Islamic culture

we see on the news and social media. If we go by the books, then we know the importance of the

work done by Muslims and their influence on the whole world. I do not believe that the current

culture of violence belongs to Muslims. These are only some extremists who are wrongly guided

and are using the name of Islam to implement their powers. The reason we do not know about

Muslim scholars is that they lost power after their peak. Their places were taken from other

European and American scholars in the future and they are buried down deep in history.
