Your learning journal entry must be a reflective statement that considers the

following questions:

1.    Describe what you did. This does not mean that you copy and paste from
what you have posted or the assignments you have prepared. You need to
describe what you did and how you did it.

I am very excited to be part of the Class CS1104 learning Computer Systems doing Unit
3 this week which is Combinational Logic and the ALU. So far I have gone through the
course Content it’s very huge and covers in-depth tasks. I have gone through Unit 3
and its getting interesting. I started reading the contents of the course, knowing its
parts, reading the tasks and duties for the week. I have to learn how this course will
be divided and the topics that we will study so I have gone through entire Syllabus to
check what am expected to learn for the entire Course. Then I followed the instructions
and completed my Task ask for the week and completed the graded quiz which was
fair.

2.      Describe your reactions to what you did?

I really enjoyed to learn new things on basics of combinational logic and became
familiar with the use and operation of multiplexors, demultiplexors, decoders and
counter circuits. I keep referencing book and also did internet research when am not
sure what word means. I have learnt a lot of new Computer Systems words. I have
learnt below and how they are used.

 Combinational Logic

 Multiplexors and De-Multiplexors

 Decoders

 Counters

 ALU (Arithmetic Logic Unit)

 ALU Design

3.      Describe any feedback you received or any specific interactions you

had. Discuss how they were helpful?

Making submissions to Discussion Forum is always a huge pleasure. I like to see what
my classmates think and also diversify on my thinking. It’s also great to receive
response to my addition weather positive or negative its way of learning new ideas. I
also like to view my classmates work to see how they approach the same problem and
how they think it should be resolved. I always put effort to make sure my
communication or what I post is understandable to all and makes more sense to
discussion. I am still receiving feedback from my peers and also reviewing their work. I
treasure the feedback even though it’s positive or negative.

4.      Describe your feelings and attitudes?

I feel very positive overall and excited to learn this course and looking forward to
advance my knowledge in Computer Systems specifically in Computer Architecture. I
am interested to learn more on internal design and functionality of the most basic
computer components. Also the ideas and techniques used in the design of modern
computer hardware and discuss major trade-offs involved in system design as well as
future trends in computer architecture and how those trends might affect tomorrow’s
computers.

5.      Describe what you learned?

I have learned about Computer Systems Architecture am using Internet and the below
books to research and study.

 Chapter 8: Combinational Logic Circuits (Tarnoff)

 Chapter 15: Introduction to Processor Architecture (Tarnoff)

Another set of questions to consider in your learning journal statement

include:

1. What surprised me or caused me to wonder?

I was surprised that Computer System is huge Course. Content includes fundamental
concepts of hardware and software as applied to computers in a business environment;
programming, operating systems, the Internet, data communications, systems
development life cycle, and information systems; use of typical software packages
including word processing, spreadsheeting, database and presentation graphics. Hands-
on experience with personal computers in labs is recommended. Intended for those
seeking a career as a computer professional, an understanding of the role of
Information Systems in the business community, or introductory “end user” computer
skills.

2. What happened that felt particularly challenging? Why was it challenging

to me?

Learning the ALU is the centerpiece chip that executes all the arithmetic and logical
operations performed by the computer. Hence, building the ALU functionality is an
important step toward understanding how the Central Processing Unit (CPU) and the
overall computer work. Being asked what to do things that I done before and having
the thought that I could not do such things has always been a challenge because you
have no idea to where to start from and what information to use. I know I always have
to work and study hard and also do allot of research. I also have to learn from my
peers. I know it will be challenging but have to cope and adjust so that can become
better student and learner.

3.  What skills and knowledge do I recognize that I am gaining?

I am beginning to learn about Understand key components that are essential to

construct both the ALU and a functioning computer system including counters and
multiplexors. I am now gaining more Computer Systems knowledge on how to further
use System Administration skills. I am getting to know more on Computer Systems. I
have installed the Lab programs and its great test environment.

4. What am I realizing about myself as a learner?

I have realized that can quickly learn something new and adjust. This course I
completely realize that I am learner to a new skill. I also achieve the result from this by
becoming better programmer and Computer Systems Architect.

5. In what ways am I able to apply the ideas and concepts gained to my own
experience?

I will be able to utilize this skill at work and also start writing computer programs. I
intend to move to DevOps Team as this Team is exciting with new development that
they are doing. They always advancing and creating new Applications and Computer
Systems.

Finally, describe one important thing that you are thinking about in relation
to the activity.

The most important thing that I have learning Computer Systems and its making me
understand how computer Systems are built and how they operate. In the process, we
will cover the ideas and techniques used in the design of modern computer hardware
and discuss major trade-offs involved in system design as well as future trends in
computer architecture and how those trends might affect tomorrow’s computers.
