HOUSES A design of living option purposed to demonstrate

rials efficiency of stacked shipping container construction.Cont
Abstract-
The use of containers as a building material has grown in popularity over the past several years due to
their inherent strength, wide availability, and relatively low expense. Homes have also been built with
containers because they are seen as more eco-friendly than traditional building materials such as brick and
cement.
Containers are in many ways an ideal building material because they are strong, durable, stackable,
cuttable, movable, modular, plentiful and relatively cheap.
The ever-growing population has brought a challenge in housing which has resulted in a housing
deficit of 17 million on a national scale. An alternative solution of using habitable shipping container
homes to support the construction capacity of conventional construction method. using shipping
containers as an alternative solution in providing affordable and decent housing from a societal point
of view of low and middle-income earners majorly affected by prominent housing .
They're are already the perfect shape to be repurposed into homes, so a home built out of them is a
minimum of 30% cheaper than a same sized home built in brick and mortar.
Moreover, most of shipping containers are within the official age or just beyond the “active service”
time, making them no longer suitable for transportation purposes .However, this does not mean
Sustainability that we cannot use these containers anymore.
There are estimated 17-20 million of these shipping containers scattered around the world today.
Today ,as many as 1 million shipping containers may sitting around unused
Shipping containers are tough- built from weathering steel. Designed to withstand stacking, stuffing
and strapping and are reused over and over.

THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT

GREEN BUILDING COMMUNITY WITH SHIPPING CONTAINERS

The term built environment refers to man and his relationship with buildings, parks, green

space to neighborhoods and cities. This can also include their supporting infrastructure, such

as water supply or energy networks. The built environment is a material, spatial and cultural product

of human labor that combines physical elements and energy in forms for living, working and playing.

It has been defined as "the humanitarian-made space in which people live, work, and recreate on a

day-to-day basis. The built environment encompasses places and spaces created or modified by

people including buildings, parks, and transportation systems. In recent years, public health research

has expanded the definition of "built environment" to include healthy food access, community,
INTRODUCTION-
The main concept of this project is to create affortable, attractive and eco friendly housing community
by reusing shipping containers.
Shipping container architecture could be defined as that type of architecture that is generally
characterized by the re-use of steel shipping containers as a structural element and Architectural
envelope that can host a specific function or a human activity. Often this type of architecture is termed
cargotecture, a blend of conventional architecture and containers. The applicable of cargotecture has
greatly expanded in the recent times in credit to their strong plating, inexpensiveness, and widespread
obtainability. It was noticed recently that many people were building their houses using shipping
containers for their low environ-mental impact in comparison to traditional houses made with brick
and reinforced concrete structure, taking also in consideration the short time required to erect a
building in this way, with future possibilities of moving these buildings to other locations or adding
extra spaces or volumes.

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SHIPPING CONTAINERS AND THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT

Storage container houses are popular with the eco-conscious crowd, thanks to their environmental
benefits – but those aren’t the only advantages of living in ship container homes

advantages of shipping container construction are many:

o
1. Cost and Availability: Shipping containers are available just about anywhere
across the globe. Used containers can be found at a low cost, or even for free, compared to a
finished structure built by other labor-intensive means such as bricks and mortar. Construction
involves very little labor and used shipping containers requiring only simple modification can be
purchased from transport companies.
2. Aesthetics: Due to the building-block nature of shipping containers, as well as
their ready ability to be opened up for windows and doors, architects and designers in the US,
Europe, and beyond, have managed to create some very unique and interesting pieces of
architecture using cargo containers. This is particularly appealing for those seeking to make an
aesthetic “statement” with their new home or business
3. Strength and Durability: Shipping containers are designed to carry heavy loads
and stacked on one another on ship’s decks and in the holds of freighters. They are also designed
to resist harsh climatic environments of both road and sea salt during transport. They are ideal for
harsh conditions and on difficult sites. They can make perfect shipping container homes in areas
with high risk of hurricanes and earthquakes thanks to the modular elements being welded
together.
4. Modular Construction: All shipping containers are made to standard
measurements. Modular construction also simplifies planning and transport because they are
already designed to interlock for ease of mobility during transportation.
5. Availability: Countries like the USA, which import more than they export, are
now having hundreds of thousands of freight containers abandoned in ports and container yards.
So containers are readily available and building houses with them helps to solve the problem of
container abandonment.
 Security: While most building envelopes can be breached given enough time and motivation,
shipping container construction offers a slightly more secure enclosure, at least compared to most
stud-framed structures. Generally, security will be as good as the quality of the door and window
hardware, as well as the specified security system.
 Environmental Impact: The reuse of shipping containers into an architectural element is
environmentally positive. LEED points are gained for the reuse of materials because you are
saving raw materials that are otherwise required for the structural framework.
 Transport and Handling: Steel shipping containers are designed to be transported by ship,
railway, and trucks. In addition, they are easily loaded, handled, lifted and moved with simple
equipment like fork lifts, loaders, and small cranes.
 SHIPPING CONTAINERS IN CREATING VARIOUS ARCHITECTURAL SPACES.
Some limitation/disadvantages of shipping containers
 Temperature Control: Steel is a conductor of heat and containers used for human occupancy
in an environment with extreme temperature variations will need to be better insulated than most
brick, block or wood structures. In temperate climates, moist interior air condenses against the
steel, becoming clammy. Rust will form unless the steel is well sealed and insulated.
 Size and Shape Restrictions: An individual container is not the living/working space many
people desire for their home. To make an adequate sized space, multiple boxes may be
combined, requiring additional work.
 Site Labor: Cutting and welding steel is specialized labor and increases construction
expenses.
 Handling: The container size and weight requires placement by a crane or forklift.
 Deterioration: Many used shipping containers are old and nearing the end of their lifespan,
especially those made of Corten steel. Scratched or dented containers rust quickly, giving the
home a more industrial look, though decreasing the longevity of the container.
 Health Hazards: Shipping containers not originally manufactured for human habitation may
possess harmful chemicals or spillages.
 Obtaining the Permits: Since using shipping containers to build a home is a relatively new
idea, it might be difficult to obtain the necessary building permits in some areas. The process can
take years, and might never be resolved positively, and this wait time should be factored in to the
total expected construction time and cost when considering a shipping container home.
EXPECTED LIFETIME OF A SHIPPING CONTAINER.
Based on the use intended for them, most containers are made to fulfil at least a one-decade lifespan, with three
decades being the chief lifespan target. They are made to be extremely resilient and secure to facilitate safe
cargo transit through a long distance. Most containers in use these days are expected to have finished a one-
decade lifespan. Through application of reasonable maintenance, a lifespan far exceeding the anticipated figures
can be expected.
COST EFFECTIVE:
In India, Shipping containers typically cost only Rs. 60,00 – 100,000 depending on their size. They're are
already the perfect shape to be repurposed into homes, so a home built out of them is a minimum of 30%
cheaper than a same sized home built in brick and mortar. The structural work is also minimal, reducing the cost

HISTORY AND EVOLUTION

Malcolm Mclean is the one who invented and patented the first standard shipping container on 26th April
1956 by converting the tanker Ideal X of World War II and is the man behind this containerization. The idea of
shipping container mainly came to his mind after observing the process of unloading the goods from trucks
and transferring to ships by dock loaders for years.

Need/Relevance of the study-
Building a shipping container home can be one of the most rewarding experiences of your life.
One of the biggest advantages of building your home using shipping containers it the cost saving
aspects and their mobility. Also, they can be built with incredible speed. Not only are they cheap
and quick to build, but they are also environmentally friendly; for every shipping container up
cycled we are saving around 3500KG of steel. However, just like with traditional home building,
one should make sure they have the right amount of information before building out of a shipping
container.
