1. Proposed Thesis Project 1

Title:

A Proposed Interactive E-Sports Gaming Hub and Animation Studio with Game

Development, Empowering Gaming Industry through Digital Architecture

Rationale:

The Government of the Philippines has declared its support for E-

Sports within its borders.

Competitive video games, or E-Sports, have become a

multimillion-dollar business. Moreover, this year, global E-Sports

revenues are predicted to hit $1.1 billion, reportedly growing by 27% from

2018 due to skyrocketing revenues from advertising, sponsorship and

media rights to competitive video gaming.

E-Gaming is a Real Career

No longer just a simple pastime, gaming is a real career field now.

Top E-Sports competitors earn some significant cash. Earnings from the

top five major game titles in 2018 amounted to over $78 million dollars, in

an industry recently posting an estimated $100 billion in revenue. To put

this in perspective, last year’s #10 player Peter Dager earned a lifetime
total of $2.9 million by age 26, focusing his skills in Heroes of

Newerth and Dota 2.

E-Gaming Creates Jobs

And finally, E-Gaming creates jobs. In 2017, gaming

supported 2,457 companies creating 220,000 jobs in the United

States. Directly employed by game developers are 65,678 workers with

the remainder of those 220,000 listed indirect jobs. Gaming provides work

for an entire industry, from game sellers and retail locations to marketing

support and management.

E-Gaming Helps Expand Gaming for a Purpose

E-Gaming also helps shine a light on many different video games

with a purpose. What was previously considered a simple bit of fun has

now expanded into a variety of industries across the world. Gamification

is a widely recognized method of teaching new skills like math and

science, as well as an entertaining way to promote fitness or financial

savings. Researchers have used gaming to understand viruses and DNA.

Medical providers are experimenting with virtual reality to treat phobias

and ease the discomfort from painful burn treatments

E-Gaming Improves Social/Emotional Interactions

The days of lonely gamers sitting around the house passed about

when the internet began. Gaming is now a largely social activity and often

includes team play. And it turns out; this interaction is good for us. Online

connection improves social interactions through chat and team play, as

well as fostering leadership. As players navigate game’s wins and losses

they learn to also manage anger, anxiety, nurturing, and growth. Players

achieve goals by learning to work through adversity and persevere, as well

as setting long-term plans.

- Problem and existing condition:

Despite the prevalence of video games in the country’s countless

computer shops and Internet cafes, the E-Sports scene in the Philippines
was primarily amateur in nature, held and funded by local Internet café

owners and franchises. While E-Sports associations like the Major League

Gaming or the Electronic Sports World Convention abroad were gaining

influence in the 2000s, lack of funding, investment, or infrastructure

hindered Philippine E-Sports from truly blossoming until recently.

Part of the reason for its slow adoption could also be attributed to

the social stigma of video games in general. Video games, at the time,

were seen as merely an unproductive pastime for children and teens.

Multiple reports of teenagers getting addicted to video games,

compromising their studies, responsibilities, and even their health, further

exacerbated negative public opinion.

- Proposed solution:

The answer lies in understanding the market itself and finding

ways to create high quality, content-based marketing campaigns. It’s

critical that marketers partner with folks in the industry or with experience

marketing to and for eSports players, teams, venues, and associated

brands. They’ll need to take their time and get to know the industry, and

they’ll need to add value and become an irreplaceable part of this niche to

grow within this audience.

After reconstructing themselves to become a cool, new brand

within this industry they have to create content that allows the consumer to

engage with their brand in the same fun way the consumers use to play the

games they love so much. Interactive content, video, virtual reality, high-

quality images, gamified content, and consumer-focused marketing

strategies are going to be what separates marketing win vs. a loss in the E-

Sports industry.

Title:

P.G.H.: A Proposed Redevelopment and Modernization of Philippine General

Hospital Diliman through Flexible and Adaptable Design

Rationale:

The National Government involves the construction and operation of a

PGH within the UP Diliman campus in Quezon City. It will be designed with

advanced medical facilities at par with top hospitals nationwide. The project

will include a multi-storey tertiary care hospital, medical research center,

ancillary facilities, and commercial areas that seek to provide facilities that are

not found in the current PGH in Manila, such as oncology/hematology,

neuroscience, developmental medicine, and disaster management facilities. It

will also serve as a formal clinical research unit with dedicated facilities for

educational endeavors and medical research. It is envisioned to be a world-

class hospital, serving the poor, with flexible and adaptable facilities for

changing needs.

- Problem and existing condition

As the biggest tertiary training hospital in the country, it provides

specialized and very specialized services and training. It is also the end

referral hospital of other public hospitals. But it is also the Hospital of the

Nation that was neglected. The number of patients increased from 586,000

to 647,000 per year over the last three years, while the medical resources

and equipment were not multiplied and not replaced. There are several

problems in health care system, including, lack of facilities, patients’ lack

of trust in general practitioners and poor referral system. Some of these

problems can be traced back to the introduction of a more devolved health

system. There are cities that still do not have the capacity to provide

efficient health care services for various reasons.

- Proposed solution

o To enhance patient safety by reducing infection risk, injuries from falls

and medical errors.
o To eliminate environmental stressors, such as noise, that negatively
affects patient outcomes and staff performance.
o To reduce stress and promote healing by making hospitals more
pleasant, comfortable and supportive for patients and staff alike.
o To create a health care environment personalized to each patient that
focuses on health and wellness, provides and wellness.
o To provide convenience and case of access and incorporate the latest
technologies.
o To the Visitors should have a simple and direct route to each patient
nursing unit without penetrating other functional areas.
