Hardware Components

A personal computer is made up of multiple physical components of computer hardware, upon which can be installed a
system software called an operating system, and a multitude of software applications to perform the operator's desired
functions.
System Unit
A computer case (also known as a computer chassis, cabinet, box, tower, enclosure, housing, system unit or simply case)
is the enclosure that contains most of the components of a computer. A computer case is sometimes incorrectly
referred to metonymously as a CPU or hard drive referring to components housed within the case.
Power Supply Unit
The power supply's job is to convert the power provided from the outlet into usable power for the many parts inside the
computer case.
Converting electric currents from the mains to low-voltage which is needed to prevent short circuit.
Motherboard
The motherboard serves to connect all of the parts of a computer together. The CPU, memory, hard drives, optical
drives, video card, sound card and other ports and expansion cards all connect to the motherboard directly or via cables.
The motherboard can be thought of as the "back bone" of the computer.
RAM (Random-Access Memory)
Random Access Memory (RAM) is the "working memory" in a computer. Additional RAM allows a computer to work with
more information at the same time which can have a dramatic effect on total system performance.
RAM is also known as: main memory, internal memory, primary storage, memory "stick", RAM "stick"
ROM (Read-Only Memory)
Read-Only Memory or ROM is an integrated-circuit memory chip that contains configuration data. ROM is commonly
called firmware because its programming is fully embedded into the ROM chip. As such, ROM is a hardware and
software in one.
A ROM chip is also non volatile so data stored in it is not lost when power is turned off.
It is also a term in a computer that a certain file can be open and retrieve but cannot be deleted.
Video Card
Video Cards, also known as display cards, graphics cards, graphics controllers, or graphics accelerator cards, convert
binary data (bytes) into display images. The Video Card is part of the usual complement of computer hardware. The
Video Card is external to the motherboard; that is, it is a separate hardware that is attached to the motherboard
through the appropriate slot.
Some motherboard variants have an integrated graphics processing capability. Computers with such motherboards do
not need to have an expansion Video Card installed for basic computing and display needs. However, if PC gaming, duo
monitors and high resolution images and displays are desired, the addition of a Video Card can drastically improve a
computer's display performance.
USB Port
USB (Universal Serial Bus) is a popular hardware interface that allows users to attach secondary hardware devices to
their computer in a Plug-and-Play fashion.
A single USB port can connect more than one hundred interchangeable devices such as modem, keyboard, mouse,
joysticks, scanners, printer, digital cameras, and external storage. USB also supports Plug-and-Play installation and allows
devices to be hot swapped. USB has become the standard connection for several devices such as digital cameras and
scanners. USB also enjoys wide customer brand recognition and a reputation for high performanceand user friendliness.
LAN Port
A local area network (LAN) is a computer network that connects computers and devices in a limited geographical area
such as home, school, computer laboratory or office building.
Regardless of the type of connector, LAN connectors serve the same general purpose: transferring data between the
individual computer and the network to which it is connected. By passing data through the LAN connector, the
computer is able to exchange information and share resources with other nearby computers, as well as access
information on machines located around the world (assuming the LAN has a gateway to the Internet).
Serial Port
In computer networking, a serial port enables external modems to connect to a PC or network router via a serial cable.
The term "serial" signifies that data sent in one direction always travels over a single wire within the cable.
Modem
A modem is a device or program that enables a computer to transmit data over, for example, telephone or cable lines.
Computer information is stored digitally, whereas information transmitted over telephone lines is transmitted in the
form of analog waves.
WIFI Adaptor
Wireless technology allows you to connect your computer to the Internet without inserting any cables -- such as phone
or Ethernet cords -- into it. Accessing the Internet wirelessly involves the use of two pieces of hardware: your wireless
router or modem, which transmits the Internet connection it receives from your wall plug into a wireless signal; and
your computer's Wi-Fi adapter, which picks up this signal and connects your computer to the Internet using it.
Bluetooth Adaptor
The function of a Bluetooth adapter is to allow you to create a Bluetooth network for your computer if it is not already
Bluetooth-enabled. Once this network has been created, your computer will be compatible with all Bluetooth-enabled
wireless devices.
Instead of your wireless devices all working on their own small network, a Bluetooth adapter enables them to all work
together, which will increase productivity. It will also prevent problems caused by competing networks.
RAM versus ROM
Both RAM and ROM provide the user random access to stored data. However, RAM provides only short-term memory
since data stored in RAM is lost when power is turned off. ROM, on the other hand, provides long-term storage since
data is permanently etched into the ROM chip.
One other difference between the two is that RAM's data can frequently and speedily be altered and changed at will.
ROM cannot be reconfigured at all.
What does WIFI stands for?
Wi-Fi doesn't mean anything. It was simply a clever name made to brand a product.
Some people simply added the idea of "Wireless Fidelity" during the developmental stages because they couldn't
comprehend such a acronym-like name without a literal meaning.
That tagged phrase "Wireless Fidelity" was dropped soon after.
