Study the picture and the passage below and answer the following questions.
Thailand is the only country in Southeast Asia that never directly colonized by the
westerners. King Mongkut or Rama IV was one of the kings that was able to preserved
Thailand independent and sovereignty in the 19th century. Before he became a king, he
was a Buddhist monk whereby he learnt some languages and studies the international
affairs. In 1851 he ascended the throne and introduced a series of reforms to modernise
Thailand and established a friendly relations with the westerners.
