LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEETS

Classifying substances as elements or compounds

BACKGROUND INFORMATION FOR LEARNERS

Elements are the simplest complete chemical substances. Each element corresponds to
a single entry on the periodic table. An element is a material that consists of a single type of
atom. Each atom type contains the same number of protons. Chemical bonds link elements
together to form more complex molecules called compounds. A compound consists of two or
more types of elements held together by covalent or ionic bonds.
Elements cannot be divided into smaller units without large amounts of energy. Compounds,
on the other hand, can have their bonds broken with practical amounts of energy, such as the
heat from a fire.
Matter can be broken down into two categories: pure substances and mixtures. Pure
substances are further broken down into elements and compounds. Mixtures are physically
combined structures that can be separated back into their original components.

KEY POINTS

A substance is simply matter with definite chemical composition and distinct

properties. A substance can be an element or a compound but NOT a mixture. It can also be
matter that exists in its pure form, usually called a pure substance.

A compound Letters,
is a substance numbers, and
formed when two or symbols are used
more elements are to represent
chemically joined elements and the
number of elements
in each compound

Water, salt, and sugar are examples of compounds. When the elements are joined, the
atoms lose their individual properties and have different properties from the elements they are
composed of. A chemical formula is used as a quick way to show the composition of
compounds. An element is the simplest form of matter that has a unique set of properties.
Examples of well-known elements include oxygen, iron, and gold Elements cannot be broken
down into a simpler substance. Likewise, one element cannot be chemically converted into a
different element.
LEARNING COMPETENCY WITH CODE

Recognize that substances are classified into elements and compounds

Activity 4 Match me!

Directions: Match each diagram with its correct description. Diagrams will be
used once.

A B C D E

__ Pure Element – only one type of atom present.

__ Mixture of two elements – two types of uncombined atoms present.

__ Pure compound – only one type of compound present.

__ Mixture of two compounds – two types of compounds present.

__ Mixture of a compound and an element.

Activity 5 Elements vs Compounds

Directions: Compare and contrast the element and compounds using Venn
diagram

Activity 6 Build me Up!

Directions: Use the template below to create a 3D periodic table

Procedures:

Copy the template to a bigger sheet of paper and cut it with a cutter or pair of scissors.
Expected outcome will be like this:
