1. What is discussed?

Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) I

The reporters discussed about the qualifications, competency standards and core
competencies. It was discussed that the course is designed to enhance the
knowledge, desirable attitudes and skills of a welder in accordance with industry standards.
It covers core competencies such as; weld carbon steel plates using SMAW. This includes
common competencies; apply safety practices, interpret drawing and sketches, perform
industry calculations, contribute to quality system, use hand tools, prepare weld materials,
setup welding equipment, fit up weld materials and repair welds. It also includes
competencies such as, receive and respond to workplace communication, work with others,
demonstrate work values and practice basic housekeeping procedure

2. What did I learned?

I learned that in order to take NCII it is not pre-requisite to be a NCI holder. As long
as you have the ability and skills needed in the training you are allowed to be a trainee.
However, you also need to consider all other requirements to be qualified. Like, copy of birth
certificate, copy of high school or college diploma, certified true copy of transcript of records,
1x1 pictures and certificate of good moral character. Yet this may vary depending on the
institution you are going to enroll at, they suggest to get in touch with the school or training
center’s official representative for more accurate and detailed information.

This mini course of tesda will consist 320 hours (more or less than 2 months) to finish
the course and be able to get assessed. Here, they will train students/trainees in welding
carbon steel plates components as specified by layout, blueprints, diagrams, work order,
welding procedure or oral instructions using welding equipment.

The other entry requirements for students who wish to take this course should
possess communication skills which can either oral or written, physically fit and mentally fit,
has good moral character and can perform basic mathematical computation.

Some skills that you will acquire form enrolling in the course include proper applying
of safety practices, able to interpret drawings and sketches, can perform industry
calculations, contribute to quality system, proper use of hand tools, can prepare weld
materials, set up welding equipment, fit up weld materials, repair welds and weld carbon
steel plates using shielded metal arc welding.

I also learned some work values such as, service, wherein you should learn to do
your best in order to get the satisfaction of your customers. Secondly is commitment to
yourself, organization and to your work. Because you need to have a healthy body and be
emotionally stable so that you can perform well. You need to be committed to your
organization because if not to them you will not get employed. And also be committed to
your work so that you can attract more customers.
3. How did the learning help me?

The discussion helped me know more about SMAW because in my college days they
did not gave us the opportunity in getting to know about this course and we weren’t able to
perform some activities in welding. That’s why if ever I will be given a challenge to teach
SMAW I will have a hard time in studying this and teaching it to my students. But because of
the session last Saturday, I got some ideas and learned about the shared experiences of my
classmates upon teaching and taking this course.

Because of that I became eager on learning about this course if I will have an
opportunity someday. And I will take the challenge if ever they will ask me to teach this
course after being qualified as a NC holder. Just like what the reporter made us realize that
it’s not a hindrance for the women like us to teach skilled works such as welding, plumbing,
police, referees and others. Nowadays, women are the most chosen employees especially in
other countries not because women are more in number than men but because of our
characteristics. Unlike men, whenever their ego got involved they will fight for it and even get
violent just to protect their dignity. But women are more emotional. They will not get angry in
front of their employer but they can cry in front of these people. Cry for their rights and not
fight for their rights. That’s why women are more patient than men and that is our advantage.

4. What is my conclusion?

As a teacher we know that we must continue learning by enrolling to advance

studies, seminars and trainings for our own sake and also for our students. To learn more
things especially as TLE teachers we are sometimes defined as jack of all trades, master of
none. But I refuse to be called one. It is our own will to be master of none. We are given
some skills yet not all. If we will focus on our strength and learn to find those, we can
become experts. Just like the quotation which our reporters had left, “It takes a thousand
practice to become an expert.” We need to search for our abilities and strength first then try
to invest for it by feeding yourself about knowledge in this field and then you may buy some
tools and equipment in order to practice this kind of skill. In return you can become a great
teacher soon by sharing your own expertise.
