1. Form
The modal verbs are:
statement nagtive statement negative

can can’t/ cannot could couldn’t/ could not

may may not might mightn’t/ might not

will won’t/ will not would wouldn’t/ would not

shall shan’t/ shall not should shouldn’t/ should not

must mustn’t/ must not

All modal verbs:

➢ have only one form
I/you/he/she/it/we/they may write an e-mail.
➢ are followed by the bare infinitive
You should call Nam.
➢ do not have an infinitive
Semi-modals:
There are also some phrases that we use like modals:
➢ ought to (ought not to)
➢ have to (don’t have to)
➢ need to (don’t need to/ needn’t)

Like modals, ought to doesn’t change.

Have to and need to change for person and tense like normal verbs and have
infinitives.

• We form questions with modal verbs like this:

Can you understand what he’s saying?
• We use modals with the passive voice like this:
The address should be written clearly on the front of the envelope.

Passage 1: Read the passage and choose the best answer to each question
Mad about Becks
In 2003, 14-year-old Jenna spoke to a journalist of ours about moving to Spain.
“I’ve only been a Beckham fan for a couple of years but my dad always loved seeing
him play at Mancester United. It took him ten hours to get there by car from Cornwall.
Mum also follows Becks now. When she and I heard he was leaving to play in Spain, I
said, “Let’s move to Spain!” Dad agreed to come but my older brother decided to stay
in England. He’s still living in our house there.
At first we didn’t know if Becks would play for Barcelona or Madrid, so my parents
bought a place in Alicante. It’s only about three hours away from both cities. Our new
home has three bedrooms and two bathrooms on one floor, and there’s a flat with another
two bedrooms and bathrooms under that. There’s a pool, too.
My friend in England will come and visit for my birthday in February. They think I’m
a bit mad but they’re pleased for me, too. I email them all the time. It’s great to live in
another country and learn a new language, but I’m finding Spanish quite difficult. I
learned French in England and I keep mixing the two. It’ll be easier when I start at my
new school.
Becks is playing really well in Spain, which keeps my dad happy! What I love most
about him is that he’s a big family man. Being famous hasn’t changed him. I’m having
a great time in Spain and I’d really like to meet Becks one day.”

Passage 2 : Read the passage and choose the best answer to each question.
Earth Day
We decided Earth Day in my city last week. The idea of this special day began in the
1960s when life was very different. Few people talked, or even thought, about the
environment. Most people had no idea how dirty our air and water were. This attitude
bothered Gaylord Nelson, who was a senator in the US government, and he had an idea.
If people around the world knew the planet was in danger, they might work harder to
save it, so he just needed to get their attention. The first Earth Day was just in the United
States but it led to events every year all around the world on April 22 or the nearest
weekend, depending on where you are.
In my town, last Saturday afternoon lots of people rode their bikes from the park, around
the town together and back to the park. Taking as much time as they possibly could, so
that the cars had to wait. Then we talked to all the drivers in cars which just had one
person in them, to explain how much they use their cars. In other places, people collected
plastic bags for a week and then made a pile of them in the town square. You can do
anything as long as it makes people of all ages come together for a few hours and talk
about the environment. Last year we had a big music event for young people. Some
people said it was a waste of time, but there was information for people to read and

announcements between the bands about how to help protect the environment.

A. people had started to worry about damage to the environment.
B. different governments decided it was a good idea.
C. one man wanted people to know about the planet’s problem.
D. people were working hard to make the air and water cleaner.
28. What happened on earth Day this year in the writer’s city?
A. Cars were not allowed in the city centre.
B. People cycled slowly through the streets.

A. that people should become involved in them
B. that they should attract young people
C. that there should be some music
D. that they should last all day
Passage 3: Read the passage and choose the best answer to each question.
The Golden Age of Comics
The period from the late 1930s to the middle 1940s is known as the Golden Age of
comic books. The modern comic book came about in the early 1930s in the United States
as a giveaway premium to promote the sales of a whole range of household Products

such as cereal and cleansers. The comic books, which were printed in bright colors to
attract the attention of potential customers, proved so popular that some publishers
decided to produce comic books that would come out on a monthly basis and would sell
for a dime each. Though comic strips had been reproduced in publications prior to this
time, the Famous Funnies comic book, which was started in 1934, marked the first
occasion that a serialized book of comics was attempted.
Early comic books reprinted already existing comic strips and comics based on known
characters; however, publishers soon began introducing original characters developed
specifically for comic books. Superman was introduced in Action Comics in 1938, and
Batman was introduced a year later. The tremendous success of these superhero comic
books led to the development of numerous comic books on a variety of topics, though
superhero comic books predominated. Astonishingly, by 1945 approximately 160
different comic books were being published in the United States each month, and 90
percent of U.S. children were said to read comic books on a regular basis.

most likely cost ____________.

Passage 4 : Read the passage and choose the best answer to each question.
The Postage stamp
The postage stamp has been around for only a relatively short period of time. The use
of stamps for postage was first proposed in England in 1837, when Sir Rowland Hill
published a pamphlet entitled “Post Office Reform: Its Importance and Practicability”
to put forth the ideas that postal rates should not be based on the distance that a letter or
package travels but should instead be based on the weight of the letter or package and
that fees for postal Services should be collected in advance of the delivery, rather than
after, through the use of postage stamps.
The ideas proposed by Hill went into effect in England almost immediately, and other
countries soon followed suit. The first English stamp, which featured a portrait of then
Queen Victoria, was printed in 1840. This stamp, the “penny black”, came in sheets that
needed to be separated with scissors and provided enough postage for a letter weighing
14 grams or less to any destination. In 1843, Brazil was the next nation to produce
national postage stamps, and various areas in what is today Switzerland also produced
postage stamps later in the same year. Postage stamps in five- and ten-cent
denominations were first approved by the U.S. Congress in 1847, and by 1860 postage
stamps were being issued in more than 90 governmental jurisdictions worldwide.
