Omi slaps water on his face as one of the men slap him on the
back and tease him that he’s getting all slick for the chicks
waiting for him and follows that up with a gay joke that Omi
never made the man’s dream come true. Omi shakes his head at
what seems like an old joke between them. The guard enters
the bathroom and hurries the men up.
Omi asks whether Govind has moved into the new part of the
city...Govind says yeah, its more convenient, his son’s
school is also near by...besides there’s nothing left in the
old neighbourhood. Omi stays silent.
Govind pulls out his son’s photograph from his wallet and
shows him... Omi smiles and says looks just like Govind when
he was that age ! Omi digs out the wood carving and asks
Govind if his son is interested in cricket... Govind laughs
and says cricket would mean leaving his computer and online
games... Govind adds Omi better give it to the one who does
have an interest in the game... (ref to Ali )
Or,
Omi laughs and says only Ish could compare with that. The
laughter kind of stops mid way between the friends... Govind
changes the topic.
she has lost a brother and her parents their only son, for *
Vidya to move out in the aftermath of Ishaan’s death seems *
unlikely, even with more liberal parents. Vidya’s own emotion *
would change towards her family and in all likelihood I see *
her following the very life she had wanted to avoid... did *
not complete her graduation and got married in a couple of *
years soon to be followed by a child. If she has indeed come *
for Ali’s debut match then its with her husband and child. *
Maybe we can instead have a scene where her husband is *
complaining a little bit about having to leave his work and *
attend a cricket match in B’bay... but adds lovingly that the *
boss in the house and her follower would not relent. The *
husband is an amicable fellow but maybe not hugely smart. *
What do you think... *
Ali takes his position at the crease, the roar of the crowd
distracts him and he keeps shuffling his feet, squinting his
eyes and generally fidgeting... His body language definitely
spells edgy. He takes his stance and stops to look around the
jam packed stadium... for a fraction of a second it seems
that his head is spinning. Ali closes his eyes and looks up
towards the sky... the sound of the crowd seems to recede in
the background as Ali opens his eyes and takes final
position.
Ishaan starts to protest but his dad cuts him out by saying
that Ishaan will forever live on borrowed glory... his idol
Tendulkar has worked hard for where he is today but Ishaan
will be spending his life just gaping at other’s success.
Ishaan snaps that his dad never let him pursue cricket... his
father retorts that one district level champion doesn’t make
a star of him... its not so easy to make it into the India
team and Ishaan has never shown tenacity in anything... why,
even the NDA was his idea, wasn’t it... then why did he come
running back a year ago. His father sighs and looks at Govind
saying, make your friend understand... cant spend your life
dreaming. With that he walks out.
A young boy barely out of his teens rides around the lane in
a fancy car, honking his car and looking towards Ishaan’s
house... a remix hindi film song blasting on the car
stereo...
Vidya peeps from her window when Ishaan storms into her room
and demands to know what’s going on... Vidya looks completely
innocent when she says how would she know... Ishaan asks
whether its the same guy who has been disturbing her in the
coaching class? Vidya gets busy in sorting her jewellery box,
keeping the ear rings in pairs and mumbles I told you I
complained about him there... how do I know that he’s going
to come here
Ishaan leaves the room as Vidya mutters fool under her breath
and takes her vantage position by the window.
Ishaan walks out with a bat in his hand with Omi and Govind
in tow. Omi keeps asking what’s the matter, who needs to be
knocked out...the car turns around the corner, music still
playing in full blast when Ishaan walks out bang in the
middle of the street ready for a head on collision with the
car before Govind or Omi can realize what’s happening.
Ishaan coolly drags him out of the car and bangs his head
against the bonnet. The boy says what’s your problem and
swears... Omi springs into action and breaks the windshield
as Ishaan slaps the guy and says what’s wrong...think of that
before you go honking your car in this lane ever again.
Ishaan turns towards his father who asks him exactly what is
he planning to do... if he has to show his manliness why did
he run away from the army ...
6.
Ishaan tries to explain the situation but his dad cuts him
short saying, he’s gradually turning into a good for nothing
hooligan... he turns towards his friends and addresses Govind
saying, I thought you had some sense and then turning to Omi
and you big hulk, cant you at least hold your friend back
before he causes serious damage... Omi stutters and says he
...he is uncontrollable when he’s angry.
Govind Omi and Ishaan seated on the park bench looking at the
neighbourhood kids play cricket. One of the kids hits the
ball hard and it flies over a concrete wall topped by a
barbed wire on to the other side... the kids start shouting
that the ball has flown over the ‘border’. Ishaan wonders out
loud who named it ‘border’...the wall dividing the Hindu and
Muslim localities have been there since they were kids...
Govind says he has heard that the wall came up during the
1985 riots... he sighs and adds that the new part of the city
is much better designed...everything is so spick and span
there.
Govind turns on the cooler and tells his mother that there’s
no point in buying stuff if she’s never going to use it. His
mom looks up from the packing plates of dhokla in a cardboard
box and says she doesn’t want to waste electricity
needlessly. Govind notices the plain packing boxes that she’s
using and says what happened to the new boxes for delivery
that I got printed ?
His mother looks at him with almost gratitude on her face and
offers to buy him a tv for Diwali. Govind in his usual
practical self reasons against it and talks about investing
it back into the business.
Ish groans and says no, not another one...what was it last
time Omi. Omi and Ishaan mention the couple of indigenous
business that Govind has proposed before and has flopped.
Govind reminds them that was more because they never applied
themselves to it and he was also busy with his studies. Omi
grins and says yeah, I move around with two centuries... one
in maths (pointing to Govind) and the other in cricket.
Ishaan cant resist from teasing that if Govind and Ish are
known for their scores of 100 Omi is no less famous for his
zero in sanskrit... that too a priest’s son !
9.
Omi says that the shops in the temple complex is under the
trust board headed by his Bittoo Mama... the idea seems to
take shape in Omi’s head slowly and his face brightens...
says, I will ask ma to talk to him.
Ishaan points out that the only Hindu kids... Omi knits his
brows and says yes we cant have Muslims enter our temple
compound. Govind frowns and rectifies that the shop is not
inside the temple, once the word of mouth publicity
establishes them as the only cricket store in Belrampur,
other kids would also come. Omi tries telling that the temple
trust might object. Govind reassures him that its too early
to speculate on this... and in any case kids and money dont
have any religion...they are god’s blessings !
Ishaan says but what will I do... two of you are enough to
run a shop. Govind clarifies that Ishaan is the star
attraction of the store... the local champion giving tips to
youngsters, that’s what will set their store apart. Ishaan’s
eyes light up like a child’s...
The three of them joke about what are they going to call
their store... Omi says they should also give their names as
signature to their store.
10.
Bittoo Mama adjusts the varied gem stone rings he wears for
religious purposes and seems to be pondering. He finally
looks up and says yes, that shop is vacant and if I put it up
in the market I’ll get a good rate... our temple is very
popular and people come from all over the city....but you are
Omi’s friends and its good for young Hindu boys to be
enterprising, so I’ll give it to you on a subsidised rent.
The sports shop looks a little out of place amidst the row of
food vendors and other shops selling flowers, miniature
idols, statues, some handicraft stores etc.
Vidya arrives with her friend Preiti and helps the mothers
distribute the prasad... their presence creates a small
furore amongst the three guys...Omi pinches Ishaan who
pretends not to look at Preiti, getting busy with arranging
the bats in the store.
Two boys look into the store and enquire about tennis ball
prices. Ish strikes up a conversation with them asking one of
them does he bat or bowl...he goes on to give tips on batting
and the right length of bat for him and Team India store
makes its first sell, much to the pleasure of the business
partners.
Govind has the money piled neatly down to the last coin, he
reads out from the ledger book- 8500 is their profit over
last three months. Ish grins and says that India winning the
one day series with South Africa during summer vacation was a
good break for them. Omi asks if he can take his share of
profit back home to his mother.
Ish and Omi are surprised and ask what do they need another
shop for, they already have one. Govind dismisses their short
sightedness and says business in the new city will bring in
much more profits... and the future of retail is in malls.
Omi says he likes it here, where the kids are also mostly
from the neighbourhood and there is a sense of familiarity.
Ish insists if money has to go back into business they should
buy a tv ... a match playing on tv will also attract
footfall. Govond tries rationalising that its not a
profitable investment. Ish insists and says he’s ready to put
in his share for the tv. Govind sighs but does not let go of
the opportunity to strike a deal... he says he’ll agree to
the tv if Ish allows him to keep notebooks and stationery
material... Ish rolls his eyes protesting that a sports store
shouldn’t feel like a study centre.
13.
Omi and Ish bring in the new tv and look at it with pride...
Omi says first time he bought an electronic item with his
money. Govind has a painter write ‘Stationary, maths tution
and cricket coaching available’ on the sign board.
The guys sit on the rooftop and observe the aarti happening
inside the temple...
14.
The three guys seated on Ish’s bike and driving through the
posher areas of the city...Ish guides them as the other two
turn left and right to check out the passign girls. They
stop in front of an automobile showroom and peep in through
the glass, checking out the brand new shining cars. Each one
takes a pick of which one they’d like to have.
Bittoo mama gets out of his car and walks into the
compound... almost all of the store keepers step out to greet
him, offer him chai etc. Bittoo mama smiles benignly and
approaches the cricket store. He sees the bunch of kids leave
the store, sees the advertisement for coaching and comments
that business seems to be picking up. Omi offers him a seat
outside the store and rushes to get him a cold drink...
Govind says he hopes the rent has reached Mamaji, they’d
handed over the money to the manager in the temple trust
office. Bittoo mama takes a sip of coke and shakes his head
in dismissal saying he’s not here about money.
He looks around the store and asks Omi why haven’t they put
up the traditional Ganesh and Laxmi idols in their shop...Omi
lies and says he does a prayer every morning before opening
the shop.
15.
Mamaji nods and then tells the guys his reason for visiting
them. His party is planning a big rally in a fortnight... he
needs help in publicising the event, so he needs the guys’
help.
Govind immediately says they stay very busy with the store
and tuitions. Mama’s brow rises in slight surprise...he’s not
a man used to having people disagree with him. Omi tries to
make up by saying he would like to do all that he can help...
Mama gives a satisfied smile and encourages Omi to take
initiative in spreading Hindu pride amongst youngsters...he
tells Omi to come to his place and collect the pamphlets that
he wants distributed. He says they can even put up some flags
and posters in the shop... it looks good to have the young
generation promote such things.
Ish laughs and says Omi should thank Govind instead for
getting the booze at cheap rates in the dry state. Ish turns
serious and says in fact both of them should thank Govind for
giving them losers a break. Omi is surprised and says you’re
no loser...you were the district champion. Ish gives a wry
smile and says ‘and also scored duck in the state
selections’. Omi tries consoling him by saying that was just
a bad day... Ish sighs and says yeah one bad day and an
entire future gone.
Govind serves them peanuts and chips and says before he gets
too high to remember numbers, he’d just like to give his
partners an update on their finance and outlines how much
they have made in the last few months and how much he’s been
able to save for the shop in Navrangpura mall.
Ish makes a face and says come on yaar, stop number crunching
at a booze party ! Govind jokes that one cant get away from
numbers...like how many bottles has Ish downed by now... Omi
takes the cue and says or how many times he has taken that
Preiti chick to lovers lane ! Ish grins impishly and says
she’s one hot cracker man... she lies at home that she’s
going for tuitions and comes to meet me... by the way
speaking of tuitions... need your help.
Ish asks if Govind can come and teach his sister Vidya
...Govind is surprised and says but doesn't she go to the
tutorial. Ish says ever since the fiasco with that boy from
the coaching his father has taken Vidya out of the coaching
class. Now only Govind can help his sister pass the medical
entrance exams. Omi exclaims wow, that tiny Vidya will appear
for medical entrance now ! Ish says yes Uncle ji...
everybody’s getting older though you still have an infantile
brain.
Omi flexes his biceps and says but the body of real man...
Ish teases yeah right... and you’re the sexiest virgin around
! Govind and Ish laugh out at this... Omi blushes and then
turns the tables on Ish by saying unlike Ish who started
checking out the nurses when he came out of his mother’s
womb...Ish says at least he does it with real women, whereas
Omi spends his energy on the cheap porns that he keeps tucked
under his bed along with the sanskrit manuscripts !
17.
‘I don’t want to play now’ rang out Ali’s voice,a thin frail
looking 12 year old who now sat petulantly on the ground,
fiddling with a few marbles in his hand.
Omi becomes the wicket keeper, Govind the umpire and some of
the other boys take fielding positions while Ali takes to the
crease and shuffles on his feet, in an awkward stance. Ish
does a fake run up and bowls a simple lollypop delivery. Ali
hits the ball high...a six. Ish nods with a smile on his face
at the rightful answer to his amateurish delivery.
Ish says he still cant believe it, rubbing the sweat from his
forehead as he stops his push ups and approaches Govind who
holds a tea cup for him. Omi continues doing push ups along
with chants of Hanuman chalisa... Govind nods his head and
opens his ledger book... Ish continues talking out loud to
himself, it cant be just luck...I didn’t bowl my best, but
the last delivery was a serious one.
Govind cautions Ish that they would need to check with the
parents both about doctor and cricket coaching... Ish says
we’ll go talk to his parents. Omi protests that he’s not
going to the Muslim locality. Ish snaps, why, would you catch
a disease if you went into one ? Anyway, don’t go if you dont
want to, I will.
Seeing that Ish is now pissed off with him Omi tries to
pacify him and says but hey, you guys are invited to mama’s
place tomorrow... he has invited us for a gathering. Ish pays
back in the same coin by saying he doesn’t have time. Govind
also says he wouldn’t know what to do there...
Govind shouts to the boy he’ll be right with him and gathers
his papers... Ish reminds him that he’s expected at his place
this evening for Vidya’s tuitions. Govind just nods and sighs
as he walks out... not entirely happy at how his two friends
seems to have cornered him into places where he doesn’t want
to be.
Vidya’s face falls but then she again springs up saying would
Govind like some tea. Govind shakes head in negative. She
continues, you don’t like tea, neither do I, but I enjoy
coffee...
20.
Govind says can they stop discussing what she enjoys and get
working on the problem at hand. Vidya looks crestfallen as
she reluctantly takes the notebook in front of her.
Two people with saffron sashes around their neck greet people
pouring into the lavish, if somewhat gawdy looking bungalow.
The gathering is being held in the gardens where an elaborate
buffet of strictly vegetarian food has been laid out. Ish
mutters these Gujjus and their veggie delights... Omi glares
at him and then points to his Metallica t-shirt and says
couldnt you find anything else to wear. Govind asks who are
all the people gathered here. Omi points to the saffron clad
priests and says these are the holy men who support Mama’s
party and the ones in dressed in white are the people from
the party. Ish quips and where do we fit in here ?
Ali’s mother enters the room and offers them to eat with
them. Omi immediately says they’re in a rush and will have to
leave soon. But Ali’s mother insists...
But Omi still hasn’t cooled down and says and what do you
guys do...your party gives extra favours to Muslims in the
name of secularism...so you use religion too.
Nasser looks a little irritated and says how can you say that
/ Have you seen the conditions most Muslims live in this
country... what extra favours ?
Omi argues that they are stopping Hindus from building one
temple at their holy site in a country with Hindu majority.
Omi snorts and says you should say that to your mullahs who
brainwashes the terrorists. Nasser’s face looks grave as he
says you cant blame an entire community because of a few
miscreants...
Omi is about to reply back again when Ish tries to buy peace
by urging not to discuss politics...they are here for Ali.
Naseer’s face breaks into a smile as he says there’s nothing
wrong in stating differences... that’s what democracy is for.
He adds after a pause, I’m glad that you want to help my
son... I cant promise much but I will try and pay something
for the maths tution. Govind mumbles a thank you just as Ish
says don’t worry about that. We’ll see...
23.
Ish says but he was praising your father... Omi grunts and
says that’s because baba isn’t a threat to them... but Bitto
mama is a powerful man and he’s scared of him.
Ish says he doesn’t see why they have to get involved with
politics. Their mission was to get permission for Ali’s
cricket coaching and they accomplished that...
Govind notes Ish’s emotional outburst and says then buy peace
with tea at Gopi’s...Omi says he would like to have something
to eat too. Ish laughs out and says of course you do, you
didn’t touch any food back there... how far can religious
pride go on empty stomach...lets satiate your Hindu belly
first !
Dr. Verma has all sorts of test results strewn on his desk
and Ish, Govind and Omi wait for his verdict... Ali can be
seen playing with marbles in the garden outside.
The doctor explains that Ali has hyper reflex which means
that the boy has ten times stronger reflex than an average
human being. Ish looks a little disappointed but Dr. Verma
goes on to explain that not only that but he is able to make
accurate analytical decisions in the split second time that
the normal brain uses for a reflex action.
24.
He adds that but his brain also tires fast because of this
super fast mode of analysing... that’s why the headache.
Ali pants as he stops mid track and says he cant run anymore.
Omi says what, tired after 5 rounds...Ish asked you to do 20.
Ali is still catching up on his breath when Govind throws a
few marbles at him, in different directions... Ali almost
instinctively reaches put and catches them all. That silences
his instructors for a while.
Ish breaks the stupefied silence and asks the boys to break
up into bowling and batting sides. Ali is on the batting side
but he doesn’t have strike and refuses to take the singles
and the twos.
Ali gets a chance to bat and hits the ball across the yard.
Ish reprimands him for always going for big shots, he needs
to learn to hold his wicket and other aspects of the game.
Ish stretches out on the mat and ruminates that its their
generation that has to do something pro change in the
country. Govind quips wisdom on a full stomach I see... Ish
shuts him up and elaborates his theory about how their
generation , the zeroes, need to be pro active and give up
the old ways of the ageing fogies of 70s and 80s decade.
25.
Omi says thats why Bittoo Mama also says, that’s why he wants
us to attend the rally. Ish groans please can there be
anything more boring than political rallies... Ish argues
politicians will not change anything. Omi points at a bundle
of pamphlets/posters and says we’re going to have to put some
up in the store.
Govind puts his foot down and says come on, that’s directly
campaigning for the party... I didn’t start a business to
start a political career. Omi’s face darkens as he says its
my business too, right... we got the shop through my family’s
connections.
Both tutor and student look grim and grumpy. Govind notices
that Vidya’s eyes look puffed up, but he pretends not to
notice and focuses on her home work.
Govind looks up from the note book to say that she’s done
quite well but now cant avoid her sniffles. He asks what’s
wrong. She says nothing. Govind goes back to discuss the
problem she couldn’t solve when a big tear drop rolls on to
the notebook, blotching the numbers Govind had started
writing. Govind looks very startled and then says Listen we
cant carry on our class if you are upset. Vidya wipes her
face and says its that stupid Garima. Govind finds out the
reason of her distress is some misunderstanding about whose
turn it is to sms... Govind presses his forehead with his
thumb and finger while Vidya talks herself out of her own
problem. Govind says, alright, if the sms problem is done can
we move to problem 8... Vidya says yes, thank you for
listening and appears to focus on the maths problem.
Vidya fidgets with her pen, her hair clip, her chair and then
finally declares can we take a 5 min break... cant cram in
too much together.
26.
Not waiting for Govind’s reply she continues that she hates
the way education amounts to cramming information without any
real understanding of the foundation of it... she goes on to
give an example from biology and Govind sees a new side to
the girl, who can be quite animated in things that she
relates to...
Govind says he can get her some good reference books from Law
Garden book market. Vidya immediately jumps at the idea and
asks if she can join... Govind clarifies he’ll get the bills
for the books so that she can show her parents how much they
cost. Vidya makes a face and says that’s the silliest thing
she’s heard...she’d like to go because that would be fun.
Govind takes the heavier bag from Vidya’s hands and walks out
saying ok, that’s done, you’ll be home in home in forty
minutes. Vidya makes a face and says you’re such a bore.
Govind raises his eyebrows and says what ? Vidya says she
wants to go to dairy den and have something.
Vidya digs into the pizza and then lowers her head to take a
sip of the milk shake....Govind finds himself looking at her
mouth and turns his gaze away. He sees the guys in an
adjacent table giving the looks towards Vidya.. She follows
his gaze but ignores the guy and turns her attention towards
Govind.
Vidya and Govind are walking through one of the posher areas
of the city.. different from the old city neighbourhoods they
live in... big cars zoom down the street, Mac Donalds,CCDs
and branded stores strewn along the way.
As soon as she leaves Ish nudges Govind and says she likes
you, man. Govind makes an incredulous face and says
everybody’s not a casanova like you. Ish teases him, you
think I don’t know how you’re the silent player. Govind
almost looks like he’s been caught at some guilty act and
turns away to greet Panditji.
Ish unwraps a brand new bat and gives it to Ali, but Ali
isn’t excited. Instead he says he needs to go early ...
there’s a marble competition in his pol. Ish snaps at him and
asks him to finish his cricket practise first. Ish reminds
Ali that he shouldn’t hit big strokes...
Ish slumps down on the floor and says its so unfair that
someone with Ali’s talent should have no interest in the game
while Ish spent his entire youth trying to make it in cricket
but was never really good enough.
Govind serves tea to his friend and tries to explain that Ali
doesn’t understand his special talent...marbles is more fun
for him right now. Ish sighs and rues about the unfair
distribution of talent in the world... Omi enters the shop
with an orange tikka on his head and starts saying that they
are making good progress in advertising for the rally...then
notices Ish’s face and asks what’s wrong. Govind tells him
about Ali and Omi gives a knowing nod and says you’re wasting
your time with that boy Ish... these Muslim boys... Govind
tries to silence Omi as Ish gives an irritated look at Omi.
The kid looks disappointed and says he doesn’t have any more.
Govind shrugs and says then come back later. But Ish has
already handed the ball to the kid and the kid happily runs
away with it. Govind and Ish exchange fuck yous before they
carry on with their respective work.
Govind looks exasperated and says excuses wont make you pass
the exam you know. Vidya looks unkempt in an old pair of
pajamas and a kiddy print t shirt. She scratches her head and
says I’m trying. Govind finishes her sentence by saying not
hard enough.
Omi is seen doing his work out while the radio plays in the
background...he looks at his own reflection in the mirror
while doing the weights, sweat dripping from his face .... A
hanuman idol and Arnold Schwarzenegger poster frames his face
in the mirror reflection.
31.
Govind turns his best tutor face forward and says education
is important... Vidya cuts him short and says for what ?
32.
Govind controls himself and says sorry for the swear word.
Vidya smiles and says I wasn’t born yesterday you know. But
see your father didn’t get in your way.
Ali hits a boundary and Vidya claps and laughs out in glee...
the song starts to warble, like an old LP disc running at the
wrong speed just as the dream images start trembling and
shaking, accompanied with loud noises of things falling...
Govind runs through the city that looks like a tornado has
hit it... the older buildings are intact but as he approaches
the new part of the city, the damages are much worse...
INTERMISSION
Govind gulps down, trying to find his voice and then says I’m
in big debt. Dr. Verma retorts that there isn’t a single
businessman who hasn’t incurred losses and cites the examples
of Navaldhari community of businessmen who are known to make
9 comebacks within their business career. The Doctor advises
him to stop wallowing in self pity...
35.
The field behind the temple compound has now been converted
into a temporary relief camp where free food and medication
is being distributed.
People are queued up at the food counter where Omi and Ish
are helping in serving... Ali approaches them dragging a
hapless woman in a burkha and her 2 kids with him... he tugs
at Ish’s shirt and says these people need help, her baby has
fever... they were saying they cant come here... Ish looks at
Omi who pauses for a second and tells Ali that they will need
to register themselves at the other counter there and then
queue for food and medicines. As Ali turns to lead them
towards the registration counter, Omi calls out and says
he’ll come with them.
Vidya shows one of her big fat reference books and says
thought I will come here and get some problems clarified.
Govind’s mother enters the room with some tea and snacks
while Vidya says she shouldn’t have bothered.
36.
Govind clears his voice and asks her to show her the problems
she’s stuck with... Vidya carefully opens the book to a page
and passes the book. A pink envelope falls on Govind’s lap
from the book... a cheesy get well card with a handwritten
note from her. Govind reads it and thanks her... she broaches
the topic of the shop but Govind avoids it, not wanting to
betray his hurt and disappointment... she touches his hand
and says in an earnest way that its lucky that the mall
wasn’t already up and running, it would have cost too many
lives. Something stirs in Govind and he almost reaches out to
embrace her but holds back...
Govind says its his fault that they are in so much debt...it
was his foolish ambition to move into the new part of the
city and have an air conditioned shop, maybe he was asking
for too much. Ish says they all took the risk as business
partners, they’ll get out of this lurch.
37.
Ish frets around the shop saying that first the earthquake
and now India’s loss against Australia in the test
match...how will business pick up if things continue this
way. Omi teases and says yes, such a pity that the 11 players
out there don’t know our livelihoods are dependent on them !
Bittoo turns to Omi and says yes, the future lies with you
boys... you should become more pro active. We have won a lot
of credibility with our relief work...now is the time to
build on this.
Ish can hardly contain his glee as he watches Ali take the
winning run... Ish claps his hands and says did you see that,
he lasted 8 overs. Just as they are praising Ali’s
***performance, the opposing team’s player kicks Ali and runs
away calling him a mullah freak.
38.
Ish, Govind and Omi rush to Ali, who now stands up with a
bleeding knee. Ish sees red and is about to give chase to the
guy but Ali says leave it... they’ll only pester me more when
you’re not there. Ish insists that he will ensure that nobody
lays a finger on him... he’ll find those punks out.
Omi looks at Ali’s cut and says he’ll take him to the shop
and get him some first aid. Govind and Ish can get some food
for him... Ali says kebabs. Omi’s eyebrows go up but then he
relents saying just dont tell anyone ok.
Omi has been given the onerous task of maintaining the Team
India cricket stores very own score board...a black board
which features the latest update of the match... it reads DAY
1 India vs Australia 2nd Test Match and the latest score.
Omi express doubt as to how they would pull this off... knock
on the dressing room and say hi Dada, check this guy out ?
Ishaan refuses to let anything dampen his spirit and says
they’ll work something out. He looks at the match schedule
that has been put up at the shop and points to the last one
dayer to be held at Goa. That’s the game he wants to go to
and try and see if they can consult someone from the Indian
team on Ali’s prospects.
Ishaan paces up and down in front of the shop and rants about
India scoring 171 all out and getting a follow on. He enters
the shop and almost hits the tv screen... Govind leaps up to
say they should switch off the tv. Ishaan says he wants to
see how the idiots can still look make eye contact. Omi
points out that the players are not exactly quavering at the
thought of making eye contact with Ish. Ish asks Omi to cut
out the wise cracks or Omi will be quavering when Ish makes
much more than eye contact with him. Omi points out at the
new opener Laxman walking in to the field and says how
another unknown player is trying his luck. Ish grumbles why
doesn’t Omi go and give a special puja for the Indian team
... if Omi’s gods can make this game change, he will treat
them to dinner.
40.
Laxman hits a four and Omi says teasingly, dont challenge the
gods... here comes the answer. Ish moves Omi aside and sits
in front of the tv.
Govind looks up the cricket data book and says that in the
history of the game there has been only 2 occasions when a
side facing follow on has gone on to win the match. He jokes
that the probability is so low that he’s ready to sponsor the
Goa trip if India wins the match. Even Ish doesn’t look sure
and tells Omi to pray for a draw.
But the admin head continues that nobody cares about sports
performance, a school is known by its academic standards.
Govind senses that the meeting is slipping out his hand and
tries to say that he can work it out at Rs.5000/month. But
Ishaan insists that sports gives practical education on team
work, leadership, discipline and focus which are just as
important as the theory in books. In fact more than the
theory in books. Ishaan’s outburst leaves the school board
lost for words... Govind wipes the perspiration from his face
thinking he has lost another deal.
The principal, Mrs Ganguly says they will try out their
scheme for 6 months and see where it goes.
Vidya now flings the comb on the bed, angry at Govind for
reducing their time together to stupid tuitions. She pulls
up the chair and buries her face in the calculus book.
Govind shrugs and says well, its your idea to sit for the
medical... Vidya keeps her face turned away, turning the end
of her churni into knots... Govind leaves. Vidya controls a
sob.
But before he can say anything Ali tries reaching from one
upper berth to the other and the adults asking him not to do
it. Naseer holds his son and says bye before leaving the
compartment.
The match has just ended and Ish says this is the time they
should try and meet the players, after the ceremony is over.
Omi cant stop staring at the foreigner women as the guys make
way through the stadium towards the VIP enclosure. Govind
asks him to stop gaping, the security would never let them
this way...
Govind and Ish try to lead the way confidently through the
gates of the VIP enclosure just as the security guard stops
them and asks for passes... Govind says in a brisk business
like manner that they have to meet someone inside.
The guard is not impressed and says so does the rest of the
crowd, he cant let autograph hunters go in there. He swears
in Gujarati and Ishaan immediately warms up to the guard
using the ‘deswallah’ connection. He gives some cock and bull
story about Govind being the owner of a big sports store and
hands over a card and a 100 rupee note with it.
The guard now eases his stance but says he has a boss to
report to...cant let all of them in. Ishaan points to Omi and
says he’ll stay back, much to Omi’s ire. The guard says leave
the kid behind but Ish sweet talks his way into letting Ali
come with them.
Ish comes out from his trance and hurries right up to the
fence to make it in time to shake hands with Harbhajan Singh
as he walks past. Ishaan congratulates Bhajji and Harbhajan
shakes his hand and continues walking towards the dressing
room when Ishaan follows him on the other side of the fence
telling him that they have come all the way from Ahmedabad to
meet him .... Would he please meet this 12 year old boy from
Ahmedabad...
The first ball whizzes past Ali and Harbhajan raises his
eyebrows to Ish. Ishaan pleads to bowl out the entire over.
Ish can hardly contain his excitement and says Bhaaji how can
we help Ali reach the top level... I can train him till the
year end but where can he get really serious training.
Harbhajan gives the name of a famous cricket academy in
Bombay and says that’s where Ali should go in an year's time
if he’s really serious about the game... Ish says but they
will be very costly right... and so many applicants...
Harbhajan ruffles Ali’s hair and runs out.... Ish grabs Ali
and together they do a huddle with Govind and Omi.
45.
She asks do you miss me... Govind spots Omi looking at him
and turns away saying I have to go... Vidya says yes, you are
on roaming and busy calculating how much this is costing you.
Omi waves at Ish and says don’t bullshit me Govind... how can
you hit on your best friend’s sister. If Ish gets to know...
Govind is really irritated now and asks Omi to shut up. It
was on Ish’s request that he started teaching her... He looks
at Omi staring at him and expresses his worst fear as
casually as he can... has Ish told Omi anything about this.
Omi shakes his head and says Ish has been busy with his
protege, while you have been with his sister. Have you guys
done it ?
Ish and Ali joins them now and Ish asks done what ? Govind
changes the topic and says contacted Panditji the supplier
for striking a wholesale deal...
Ish rolls his eyes and says there’s nothing more sacrilegious
than talking about business when there are so many babes to
talk about.
Bittoo Mama looks at the boys and says that he likes the fact
that they are expanding in business... business has always
been a Gujarati’s pride.
47.
But its not enough to just work for one’s own self
interest... if they are true sons of the soil then they must
give back something to their motherland too...
Govind tears his eyes away from her as she fixes the mosquito
coil beneath the table and asks so how have you been...
48.
She shows her favourite hide out place beneath the raised
platform for the water tank and pulls out a thermos flask and
two plastic cups... welcome to Vidya cafe she says with a
grin. She notices that Govind is not making eye contact with
her and holds him by the chin and says its alright in a soft
voice. Govind can’t control himself anymore and holds her in
a tight embrace and starts planting kisses all over her
face... Vidya’s face breaks into a shy smile as she leads his
mouth to hers and exchanges the butterfly kisses for a big
smooch....
Ish hires an old vcr player while Ali watches with curiosity.
Govind is doing the accounts for the day, Omi and Ish do the
stock inventory for the new supplies. Omi recounts the
deliveries he did to Govind but is interrupted by Govind’s
phone beeping. Govind checks his message .... Its Vidya
sending him sms kisses and asking wht r u doin... Govind
quickly sends kisses back and goes back to listening to Omi’s
report. His phone beeps again and Omi is irritated... who the
fuck is sms-ing you so much. Govind says coolly its a
supplier... Ish says trying to sell you something? Govind
replies flippantly yeah very hard...Omi says why don’t you
call him then... Govind- that would look too desperate.
Govind replies back to the the sms and says with a note of
boasting, nope I’m going to be the first Patel.
50.
Naseer lets the topic go and asks him where’s Ishaan and
Omi... Naseer starts walking with Govind and says are they at
the other meeting...I’ll go and say hello to them. I’ve been
meaning to thank you guys for the Goa trip...Ali can’t stop
talking about how he batted to Harbhajan! Govind doesn’t know
what to say as Naseer leads the way and enters Nana park.
Ali’s father stands out with his beard and cap in the midst
of the saffron brigade. People start muttering around them as
they pass... Naseer tries waving at Bittoo but he looks away
and speaks into Omi’s ears , who is standing beside him on
stage.
The tv channel reveals that news has just come in that four
Muslim boys have been identified as Al Qaeda terrorists on
this deadly suicide mission... Bin Laden has claimed
responsibility for it.
Omi continues to speak over the phone saying that yes this
violence cannot be allowed.... they will wait for the
election results and start a fresh campaign.
Omi gushes that surely they will get them next time..Mamaji
will be contesting for that won’t he ? Mamaji smiles and says
that’s secondary... what is needed is a fresh strategem for
the party. The high command had expected the bye election
loss but that just means they work doubly harder for the
coming year...
Tendulkar hits a four and Ish just ignores his father and
raises the volume of the tv. Govind stands awkwardly
wondering how he can get out of this... Ish’s father tells
him to switch on the light on the stairs leading to the
terrace.
54.
Vidya locks the door of the terrace and locks her gaze with
Govind... two people staring at each other’s cake smeared
face but yet forgetting to laugh.... A fire cracker bursts in
in the distance, the sky lighting up suddenly with a shower
of golden light....
Vidya and Govind are crouched under the water tank both of
them half dressed, she in her kurta and he in his trousers...
Vidya is sitting with her face buried in her arms sobbing
silently... Govind looks completely at a loss as to how
handle the situation and almost as shaken up as Vidya. He
tries saying its ok... look, I’m sorry. Vidya raises her head
to reveal a tear blotched face and shakes her head...she
breaks down and speaks through her sobs... she’s
doomed, defective, something's wrong with her... she wanted to
so much but she can’t make love... she must be frigid.
Vidya kneels down in front of him and lifts his chin... she
says I love you... Govind looks at her and says softly happy
birthday Vidya.
Ish’s mother beams at Govind and offers him to join them for
dinner.. Ish hollers that Govind should stay back and watch
India win this. Govind refuses politely saying his mother
will be expecting him and leaves.
Omi looks a little hurt and says hey, I’m not doing this to
make up for anything... I’m doing this because I want to
prove... Ish says prove what ? Omi shrugs and says you guys
have your goals... Govi has business Ish has cricket, I had
to do something. Govind cant hide the surprise in his voice
and says politics ? Does your mom know. Omi’s face breaks
into a wide smile as he says, finally something for her to be
proud of me.
Ali strikes a ball that slips past mid off but he’s slow in
going for a single... Ish shouts at him not to sleep on his
feet... Ali tries picking up speed but the fielder does a
direct hit at his side of the crease getting him out.
Ish sighs and speaks to Ali as he comes off the crease... Ish
tries explaining to Ali that he has to learn to go for the
ones and twos... they have a few months till their trip to
Mumbai to apply for the cricket coaching summer camp... Ali
can’t let Ish down on that. Ali’s eyes well up with tears and
he says what if I can’t Ish bhaiya... Ish slaps his back and
says if you believe you can you will.
Ishaan waits near the bus stop... Preiti turns around the
corner...their eyes meet and Ishaan pretends to get busy with
his phone. Another girl comes in and greets Ishaan. He chides
her for being late and kicks starts the bike while the girl
mounts it from behind. Preiti’s gaze follows them as Ish
rides away.
Vidya calculates and says she’s within her safe period now...
Govind shrugs and says its always safe, we’ve never done it
without protection. Vidya sighs and says you’re such an
unromantic...
Govind tries to save the situation by saying that the boy has
talent in cricket so Ish is helping him out. Bittoo mama
doesnt say anything in response and asks instead whether Omi
and his friends are planning to go for the trip in February.
Before Bittoo mama leaves Omi has an idea and says maybe I
can convince my folks to go this time... Bittoo nods at the
idea and says yes, they will also get a chance to do darshan.
Omi’s father shakes his head and says he doesn’t feel right
about mixing politics with religion... he doesn’t want to be
labelled as any party’s supporter.
Omi’s mother pets him and tells him not to worry, they will
not let their son’s attempts go futile...
Omi giving out the details of his parents for the ticket
booking on Sabarmati Express... leaving on 20th February,
returning a week later.
Vidya’s worried face makes him stop and he asks again what’s
wrong ?
Govind looks almost shocked for a second to hear her say the
word and then sits beside her on the bench. He says what do
you mean...we’ve never done it without protection.
She clutches Govind’s arm and says I dont know maybe I’m just
fretting because I’ve been with you...
Vidya says they should wait for another couple of days its
probably a false alarm...just that she was getting worried
sick thinking about this on her own.
Omi frets that the train is late and nobody is picking up the
phone at the station... he better go to the station himself
to receive his parents. Ishaan offers to come with him but
Omi says he doesn’t know how late the train is exactly... Ish
better stay back at the shop, it might be a long wait.
Omi gets a call from Mama asking about the ticket details of
the karsevaks returning form Ayodhya... Omi wonders why but
reads out from his notebook that his parents and others were
booked in Coach S6... Mama asks him to come over. Omi says he
was about to go to the station... but Mama insists.
And then Mama drops the bombshell... they burnt the coach
down... those Mullahs burnt them all.
Some of the guys now drag him away from the pillar while Omi
resists furiously.... just mindlessly screaming. Finally
Bittoo Mama just embraces Omi, gesturing the others to back
off.... Omi breaks down like a baby... tears and blood
streaking his face.
Govind and Ish also decide to shut the shop and go look for
Omi... there’s no answer on his phone. A passer by talks
about how a bus has been burnt in a neighbouring area to
protest against the train mishap. Ish says oh shit... I’d
asked Ali to come by, now it seems unwise to leave him
waiting alone... Ishaan suggests that Govind go ahead to meet
Omi and he’ll join them as soon as he’s dropped Ali back
home.
People around him are still talking about the many rumours
surrounding what transpired at Godhra...Omi feels
claustrophobic and feels his head is spinning with visuals of
the ghastly burnt train. Omi gets up abruptly, pushing
through the people and rushes to the bathroom, puking his gut
out.
62.
Omi takes a gulp down of the whiskey and as the warmth fills
him up he says he wants to go to Godhra and retrieve his
parents’ body. Bittoo sits down beside him and lays a hand on
his shoulder saying it won’t be a good idea to travel now and
besides he doesn’t want Omi to suffer the trauma of seeing
the actual site. There’s nothing for him to do in Godhra...
silent tears stream down Omi’s face. Bittoo asks him to be
strong... this is what the bastards wanted, to break his
soul... but they don’t know what happens when a sleeping
giant is awoken.... Omi needs to show to the world that the
Hindu jawan is not made of weak mettle... he must avenge his
parents’ death here.
Just then Govind calls Ish and tells him that he spoke to Omi
and he asked to meet near Ali’s neighbourhood. Ish looks a
little distracted and asks why... Govind says he doesn’t know
but they better meet up. Ish says he’s also headed in that
direction, so they’ll be with Omi soon. Ish asks did Omi
sound alright... Govind says he doesn’t know...its best that
they talk to him in person.
A burning rag goes flying across the border wall and Ish says
they better hurry up...
Ish has trouble hearing over the din on Omi’s side and asks
him where he is... they are waiting for him at Ali’s house.
Omi says come out, I’m waiting for you outside... Ish says
they’ll be there in 2 minutes...Ish just calls Omi’s name
once but doesn’t finish his sentence...Omi has disconnected.
Some of the men stop Govind from opening the door saying that
they’ll all be dead if they open the door. Govind has a look
of fleeting panic on his face when Ish cuts in and says not
to worry, they have a friend waiting for them. The men in the
room have a look of incredulous confusion on their face, not
knowing whether they have friends or foes amidst them.
Naseer looks around at his family and all the other people
gathered around the room, a look of worry, fear and
questioning towards him... Naseer takes a deep breath and
requests Ish to call their friend... he’ll step out with them
and try and plead sense.
Ish calls Omi again and asks him what’s going on... they’re
being attacked. Omi snaps well come out of there and you
won’t be... which self righteous Hindu can now be on the
sides of the murderers... how can you be on their side
Ish asks to get his guys to hold down the fire till he and
Govind can step out and talk to him. Omi watches the crowd
surrounding the building and asks Ish to step out quickly.
66.
Omi tells his guys to keep it down... his friends are coming
out. Govind asks Naseer to stay inside till they get a chance
to go and speak to Omi... so saying the two friends step out
into the compound.... Omi yells to the mob to let them step
out.
Govind says have you gone completely mad... these guys have
been nowhere near Godhra Omi... please get a grip on
yourself.
Ish says there’s Ali and his family inside Omi... li’l Ali on
whom we’ve all such high hopes...
Omi lashes back there were women and kids on the train too...
how can you fuckers be on their side ? All my life I’ve been
pushed around by you guys but I’m not budging today...you
dont know how it feels to have your family burnt down alive
Govind says an eye for an eye will make the world blind...
Omi spats you keep your philosophy to yourself..Ish
interrupts and says I wont let you do this Omi... you’re
under severe trauma and you’re not thinking straight...but
I’m not going to let you harm these people.
Omi pushes Govind away and draws out his trishul... Ish
screams no and lunges forward....
67.
But Omi has already thrust the trishul forward with all his
strength ... the spikes go clean in through Ish’s stomach...
his screaming stops as he seems too shocked to even register
pain.
Ali has also run out into the compound looking stunned at the
massacre, followed by a bunch of men who had sought refuge at
Naseer’s house....
Ish plops to the ground, his eyes now widen into fear as he
shouts Ali’s name in a hoarse whisper and clutches hold of
Omi’s hand in a death like grip, his eyes doing the talking
that his voice can no longer manage. Omi starts shaking
uncontrollably... his face contorted in pain...
Omi frees himself from Ish’s grip and rushes towards Ali
before he gets caught in the deadly circle of the
mobsters...dragging him away. Ali seems to have lost the
strength of his legs as he stares in wide eyed shock as Ish
slumps down on the ground in a pool of blood. Govind catches
hold of Ish’s falling figure as Omi covers Ali’s eyes with
his hands and holds him in a tight embrace, his body wracking
in sobs.
Behind them a fire has broken out in the house... its flames
look like they’re reaching out to touch the angry red sun
setting in the horizon....
The red light on the third umpire’s box remains unlit as the
third umpire announces his decision and the green light is
switched on to declare ‘Not out’. A collective sigh of relief
washes down Govind and Omi...
The ball bounces off the middle of the pitch...Ali moves back
to make room for himself and connects bat with ball with a
sharp cracking sound.... The ball soars high into the air...
A guard walking down the corridor looks into his cell and
says knowingly, ‘couldn’t sleep the night before you step
out, could you... you better get ready’
Omi walks up to the wall and starts taking off the paper
clippings and pictures off the wall one by one...
FADE OUT
