Branches of Geography
1. Regional Geography – Deals with all or many of the geographic elements of a
place or region.
2. Topical Geography – Concentrates on the study of one earth feature or human
activity as it occurs throughout the world.
3. Physical Geography – is concerned with the location of earth features such as
lands, water, and climate.
 Geomorphology – is a kind of physical geography that studies about land
and water forms, as well as the irregularities in the surface of the earth.
 Climatology – analyzes differences and similarities in climate from place
to place.
 Mathematical geography – has to do with the accurate measurements of
the earth and the calculation of the exact location of points on the earth’s
surface. (eg. Location fo the city in latitude and longitude)
 Oceanography – is concerned with the study of the ocean and its
phenomena, current wave activity, temperature differences, and tides.
 Biogeography – Is concerned with the study of the geographical
distribution of plants.
 Medical Geography – (New science) is concerned with the study of the
relationship between disease-causing organisms and their physical
environment.
4. Human Geography – (also known as Anthropology) It’s primary concern is man
and his works so that its closely allied with the other social sciences such as
economics, political sciences, history, sociology, anthropology.
 Cultural Geography – deals with the study od the distribution of cultural
traits such as customs.
 Population Geography – deals with study of the numbers of distribution
of people.
 Political Geography – deals with the study of the relationship between
political units (provinces, states, nations, or unions of nations)
 Historical Geography – is the study of the manner by which geographic
patterns of man and his works change through time.
 Urban Geography – is the study of cities with the important roels cities
play in the life of a nation.
