REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDY

Foreign Study

Social media application such as Facebook, YouTube and other social media

platforms, are overtaking the world and can be noticed as a global consumer

phenomenon. Because of the advancement and development of internet technologies,

there is some changes in how we interact, communicate, learn, and build knowledge. The

common activities among children, adolescents, and adults nowadays are social media

usage. The youth are open a portal for entertainment and communication and it is

becoming one of the main platforms for accessing information and news. They can access

social media easily from their cellphones. This encourages them to use social media not

only for receiving and retrieving information, but also for being online and connectiog

with other people, and they consume and produce on the social platforms [ CITATION

Mow18 \l 1033 ]

Social media is the new form of media that have many characteristics and

features. Social media have many facilities on same channel as communicating, texting,

images sharing, audio and video sharing, fast publishing, linking with all over world,
direct connecting. Social media is a way to interaction among people in which they

create, share, exchange and comment among themselves in different networks. Ninety

percent of all online users use social media in some way or other. There are many social

media platforms that are the but slightly different purposes. Because of the spreading of

social media platforms, people are easily connected, and the information can easily to

spread and get [ CITATION Chi17 \l 1033 ]

Local Studies

Social networking media is the major source of communication between

individuals in the world. Social networking media is about sharing and communicating

with other people. It has spread its wings to various other fields and education is one of

the new sectors where the concept of social media is making a great role. They are

communication channels or tools used to store, aggregate, share, discuss or deliver

information with friends and colleagues using the internet. social media used by students

and teachers to share original content the articles or the publications. Students use it and

provide an opportunity to seek to questions they may have related to their course

[ CITATION Rem17 \l 13321 ]

Foreign literature

According to the Juice Academy (2018), the population that uses the internet is

more than half of the world. This is highlighted by social media users increasing by 21%
since 2015, with 2.8 billion users reportedly globally in 2017. The main reason why

students use social media is to stay connected. Students can communicate and share

thoughts using social media platforms. This is one of the positive effects of social media on

life of students. College and university students spend more time on social media because

there is a freedom in these platforms. Students are free to do whatever they want. They can

create new friendships, express their views and opinions, and even create ‘new identities’

through social networks platform. Social media also show up students to a new way of

learning. The students who are frequent users of social media are more innovative and

exhibit better memory. Social media can be an asset for learning, keeping students

connected and engaged with their field, course, and peers.

Social media have positive and negative impact to the students. The positive

practices of social media increase student’s social intelligence and understanding of

human behaviors.  The negative practices of social media make them materialistic, angry

and addicted to too many bad things. The problems arise when we use it without

analyzing what we are doing and what will be the impact on us, our family, society, and

country. That is why social media not only a great tool for personal development, but it is

also a tool for personal and social destruction. It is important to educate students about

the best practices of social media in the schools so that they can get the benefits of

communication applications and technologies for their career and personal development

[ CITATION Vij171 \l 1033 ]

According to the Teacher Boards (2018), social media plays a huge part on how

people interact with each other in the modern day and although this increase in

communication for young people can be a good. On an academic level, social media can

have a negative effect on student productivity when it comes to concentration in the

classroom, timekeeping, and conscientiousness. It is important to discuss ways to combat

these factors without heralding new media as a societal crime which many previous

attempts of raising awareness on this issue have tended to do. Social media platforms

such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram have many beneficial aspects to modern day

society and its users. Students become more politically aware, making them more likely

to vote, and has also helped them communicate with other students. The negative effects

such as having damaging effects on self-image and mental health, productivity in school,

and issues with privacy and data protection are all attributes that students need to be

educated on.

Everyone is connected because of the Internet. The communicating and free

sharing of thoughts among people were restricted by long distance, nationality and/or

religion in the past. The new world of social networking allows free sharing of thoughts.

Social network platform such as Facebook, which has arisen as a giant in this social

world. People use social networking to stay connected, make friends and satisfy their

social needs is the main reason why people use social media. There are many reasons

why students spend more time socializing. Social networks give them the freedom to do

whatever they want, to upload and talk to whom they want. Studying, learning good
habits and gaining knowledge to become a person with moral character are the important

things in life of the students. But students have been trapped by the device of social

networking. Students disregard their studies by spending more time on social networking

websites rather than studying or interacting with people in person. Always using social

networking can affect the grades of the students [ CITATION Abh15 \l 1033 ]

Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat and Instagram are kind of social media that are all

highly used social media platforms. The effect of social media usage can be positive or

negative effect, college students has the potential to affect their grades, social-skills, and

time-management skills. Although social media have a huge distraction for college

students, it also helps with their learning and adjustment to college life. Social media

opens a whole new technological world for students, students have a right to choose to

adapt new world for their academic success [ CITATION Kel18 \l 1033 ]

Local literature

Social Media plays an important role in life of the students because it easier for

them to communicate, access information and provide information in social media

platforms. Social media is all about collaborating, networking, sharing and generating

knowledge and content [ CITATION Don19 \l 1033 ]

People today can exchange ideas, feelings, personal information, pictures and

videos because of social media. In the Philippines, social networking is one of the most

active web-based activities. The use of social media become so wide in the Philippines.

Filipinos being declared the most active users using social networks such as Facebook,

Instagram, Snapchat, and Twitter. Philippines has been called as “The social networking

capital of the world”. The effect of these social media can be positive or negative

consequences. It increases student collaboration, improves participation, content rich

resources and they are useful for team projects. It also caused some potential harm to

society [ CITATION Ale17 \l 1033 ]

Social networking allows free sharing of thoughts, information, and knowledge

through online social networking sites such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and the like.

Students have freedom to do whatever they want, they can upload or download data,

make new friends, comments on other people's live, and create other online identities the

real world does not allow. Many students spend their time using social media for chatting

with their acquaintances, playing online games, and watching videos instead of reading

their lessons, making their assignments, and other academic requirements. When students

work or search their material online, they get attracted to social networking sites to kill

their boredom during study time they are diverting their attention from their work
