CNS 1210 - Network Fundamentals

I. PREREQUISITE: Basic computer skills.

II. COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course develops those skills necessary to design, build, and


maintain small to medium-size networks. The course will follow
elements of the Cisco Certified Entry Networking Technician (CCENT)
and the Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) programs. Activities
will offer a balance between classroom and laboratory work.

III. CREDIT: 5 Semester hours: Lecture 4 hours, Lab 2 hours.

IV. COURSE OBJECTIVES:

A. Setup a personal computer system.


B. Install, configure and troubleshoot Cisco IOS devices for Internet
and
server connectivity.
C. Plan a basic wired infrastructure to support network traffic.
D. Configure a server to share resources and provide common Web
services.
E. Implement basic WAN connectivity using Telnet services.
F. Demonstrate proper disaster recovery procedures and perform
server backups.
G. Monitor network performance and isolate failures.
H. Troubleshoot problems using an organized, layered procedure.
I. Describe the OSI model and the process of encapsulation.
J. Describe the structure of the Internet and how communications
on the Internet occurs between hosts.

V. MATERIALS REQUIRED:

A. Internet access and Web browser with latest flash plug-in


installed.
B. Cisco Discovery lab manual.

Classroom Policies

Class begins and ends at the scheduled time, unless otherwise specified by
the instructor. If shift work or employment will cause an interruption of the
student’s class time, please confer with the instructor on the first day of
class, to see if some arrangement can be worked out to prevent loss of grade
points. This must be done whether the conflict would prevent the student
from attending all or any part of the class.

Talking or other distractions will not be tolerated during the lecture.


Questions and discussions are welcome pertaining to relevant and current
class material only.

Computers are provided to be used in relation to class material only. No


music, games, surfing the net, checking e-mail, etc. is allowed during class
time. No programs are to be downloaded to the computers without the
permission of the instructor. Failure to abide by these rules will result in loss
of Internet privileges.

Personal laptops are not permitted in the classroom, and removable drives
are not to be used during testing. All cell phones are to be turned off or in
silent mode during class.

The classroom will be available as an open lab during various times of the
day when classes are not being conducted. Use of the classroom as an open
lab when class is being conducted is at the discretion of the instructor

No food or drink is allowed in the classroom. Smoking is not allowed


inside the Technical Building.
Horseplay will not be tolerated.

Cisco Requirements

Cisco has established requirements the student must meet in order to


continue on with the course work.

The semester will be divided into two sections corresponding to Cisco’s


Discovery 1 and 2 curriculum. The student will be required to pass the first
section (Discovery 1) at midterm with a 60% or greater before being allowed
continue on with the second section (Discovery 2).

Each student is required to keep an engineering journal / study guide and


create portfolio of themselves. The instructor will request to see these at
various times throughout the course and upon completion of each section.
The engineering journal / study guide will be given a grade at the end of
each Cisco semester.

Grading System

The grading scale is as follows:


A = 100 - 90
B = 89 - 80
C = 79 - 70
D = 69 - 60
E = 59 or less

Not all assigned laboratory exercises can be completed during scheduled


classroom time, students are expected to complete them outside of class
during lab hours.

Department Attendance Policy

If you are not going to be able to attend a class session, you must
notify the instructor prior to the beginning of class (excused absence).
You are allowed three excused absences.

Makeup Policy

It is the student’s responsibility to contact the instructor about any


work missed. All makeup work must be made up within two weeks of
the date missed unless prior arrangements have been made with the
instructor. Any quiz missed due to absenteeism, arriving late or
leaving class early cannot be made up.

You will not be allowed make up work missed if you are unexcused or
have more than three excused absences. The student is cautioned
that absenteeism, arriving late or leaving early can quickly lower a
grade point average.

All exams missed must be made up one week before midterm exam
(Discovery 1) and one week before final exam (Discovery 2). Quizzes
will not be allowed to be made up.

Office Hours

Office hours will be posted in the door of the instructor’s office. The
instructor will be available to answer questions regarding the class
curriculum during these hours. Availability after office hours is by
appointment only.

Finding Help

If you need tutoring, free help can be obtained by contacting the tutoring
coordinator,
Ed Ruffion in the administration building or calling 618-437-5321 extension
1343.
If you are able to tutor students, also contact the tutoring coordinator so that
funding
can be arranged for you.

When attending classes at Rend Lake College the student should leave a
copy of his/her schedule stating day, time, building and room number where
they will be while on campus with a responsible person.

The instructor has the right to change or modify this course syllabus at his
discretion.
