LESSON PLAN IN MATH I

PPSLC B1.8. Define rational numbers; translate rational both terminating and
repeating / non-terminating from fraction to decimal form;
and decimal to fraction form.

I. Objective:

Express a non-terminating or repeating decimal as a fraction.

II. Subject Matter: Changing Decimal to Fraction

Reference: Elementary Algebra, pages 49-50

IM’s: Flashcards, charts
Values Integrated: Accuracy in one’s work
Alternative Teaching Strategies: Discovery Approach

III. Instructional Procedure:

A. Introductory Activity:

1. Drill ( use flashcards)

Tell whether the following fractions are terminating/

repeating decimals.

a) 3/5 b)2/7 c)1/9 d)3/4 e)2/3

2. Review

Checking of the assignment.

B. Development of the Lesson

1. Discussion and Exposition

It was quite easy to change any terminating decimal to

fraction, but can repeating non-terminating decimal be represented
as a fraction? The Process is done below.
Illustrative Examples:

Change the repeating, non-terminating decimals to fractions.

a) 0.55…
Let n=0.55…
10n=5.55… multiply by 10
- n=0.55… subtract the first expression
9n=5
n=5/9 divide by 9

b) 0.32
Let n=0.32…
100n=32.32… multiply by 100
- n=0.32… subtract the first expression
99n=32
n=32/99 divide by 9

c) 0.123…
Let n=0.123…
1000n=123.123… multiply by 1000
- n=0.123… subtract the first expression
999n=123
n=123/999 divide by 999 and reduce to lowest term

To sum up the procedure:

1. If the repetend consists of 1 digit, multiply both sides of the

equation by 10 and subtract n from 10n.
2. If the repetend consists of 2 digits, multiply both sides of the
equation by 100 and subtract n from 100n.
3. If the repetend consists of 3 digits, multiply both sides of the
equation by 1000 and subtract n from 1000n.

C. Fixing Skills:

Change the repeating, non-repeating decimals to fractions.

1) 0.22… 2)0.15… 3)0.07… 4)0.125

D. Generalization:
How do we express repeating decimals to fractions?

VI. Evaluation:

Change the repeating/ non-terminating decimals to fractions.

1)0.77… 2)0.88… 3)0.2323… 4)0.93… 5)0.6…

V. Agreement:

Change the repeating/ non-terminating decimals to fractions.

1)0.37… 2)0.83 3)0.632 4).6363
