1. OBJECTIVE.
This report presents the results obtained when testing the Medium Voltage Conductor Cover
(MVCC) under different controlled laboratory test conditions. There are two sizes of MVCC
that were tested: MVCC-19/0.75 and MVCC-25/1.0.
2. SUMMARY.
This report documents the qualification tests used to insure adequate performance of the MVCC.
The product was evaluated by means of the following test; AC 1 minute dry and 1 minute wet
withstand, AC 4 hour dry withstand, load cycling, and low temperature installability.
All three phases must be covered with MVCC to obtain these levels of protection outlined. With
all three phases covered the phase to ground voltage of VL/3 would be the applied voltage.
For the MVCC-25/1.0, a maximum conductor diameter of one and one-eighths (1 1/8”) inch
(28.5 mm) and a minimum conductor diameter of five-eighths (5/8”) inch (15.8 mm) were tested
and there were no differences noted between the maximum and minimum conductors.
For the MVCC-19/0.75, tests were performed on the maximum conductor diameter of seven-
eighths (7/8”) inch (22.2 mm) only.

A 3 foot (0.9 m) long MVCC sample is installed with cable ties placed at intervals up to 2.5’
(0.76 m) for the configurations listed in Table 1. A 4 inch (102 mm) wide metallic, solidly
grounded copper mesh is tightly wrapped around the sample in the middle of its span. The AC
voltage is applied to the central conductor. The sample should withstand the applied voltage for
1 minute.
Using the same test arrangement as in section 3.1, the samples as listed in Table 1 are to be
subjected to simulated rain. According to the standard IEEE-4 2000, the rain rate will be 1-
1.5 mm/min at the sample level and the water conductivity 100 S/cm. The AC voltage is
applied to the central conductor. The sample should withstand the applied voltage for
60 seconds.

Using the same test arrangement as in section 3.1, the samples as listed in Table 2 were
subjected to the applied voltages. The samples should withstand the applied voltage for 4 hours.
Three new samples of MVCC-25/1.0 ~ 1 foot long (0.3 m) each were installed on a loop of 397
ACSR conductor for 30 cycles at a conductor temperature of 130°C. Each cycle will consist of
8 hours “ON” at 130°C, and 16 hours “OFF” at room temperature. The samples should show no
signs of deformation, loss of thickness, and should not split or become open.
The samples shall be preconditioned by cooling them as well as the conductor (795 ACSR and
MVCC-25/1.0) to -18C for a minimum of 4 hours. The samples shall then be installed at this
temperature. The samples shall be installable without difficulty and shall not suffer any
deformation or damage. Precautions shall be made to prevent unrealistic moisture condensation
on the samples due to temperature variance.

This additional test is to insure adequate performance of the MVCC-45/1.75 when used on a 35
kv system with all three phases covered. A 2 foot (0.61 m) long MVCC sample is installed on a
1.75”(45mm) dia. by 5’(1.52m) long hollow tube with cable ties placed 2” from each end. A
4 inch (102 mm) wide metallic, solidly grounded copper mesh is tightly wrapped around the
sample in the middle of its span. The AC voltage is applied to the central conductor. The
sample should withstand the applied voltage for 1 minute. Three samples were tested up to 20.2
kv. All samples passed.
