Radio Datasheet 7187 New Nokia "Mini" MHA Installation

This datasheet is compiled and owned by Radio Engineering. Date of last update : 22 March 2006.

SUMMARY: This Datasheet provides guidelines for the installation of the new Nokia
“Mini” UMTS MHA, which replaces the existing unit from early 2006.
The new MHA is a single unit, with DC feed on one port only, and
therefore requires new procedures for deployment.

Target Audience This Datasheet is intended for use by anyone required to design, or work on, O2 UK
Antenna systems.

General The new Nokia MHA is shown below. It is physically distinguishable from the
previous version, in that it is a smaller, single unit. The RF features of the new
MHA are equal to the old MHA, however, DC power is now fed to a single port
only.

Deployment The new unit will be fitted to new install sites only. There will be no retrofit
programme to existing sites. The new and old MHA’s must NOT be mixed on sites,
as different configurations are required by the BTS to support the new MHA. Old
version MHA’s will be available for the foreseeable future where a single MHA
fails on a site fitted with original MHA’s. In the event of old style MHA’s not being
available, new style MHA’s can only be fitted for the whole site, and liaison with
Nokia will be required to re-configure the BTS equipment.

DC connection The new MHA is DC fed on one port only labelled “BTS2 DC MHA” (See above
photo), and therefore requires 3 Bias T units per 3 sector site, rather than 6.
Installers must exercise extreme care to ensure the Nokia BTS MHA power
feed via the bias T is connected to the correct port.

Feeder Connection O2 feeder labelling and numbering does not directly indicate or imply the “Main”
or “Diversity” or “Tx” / “Rx” connections, however, with the new MHA, correct
feeder labelling and connection to the correct ports is essential to ensure the DC
feeder BTS port is connected to the correct MHA DC Power port. The BTS ports
must be connected to the MHA as shown in Table 1 below.

Table 1 – BTS to MHA Feeder Connection

Sector BTS label BTS Port No DC Power / MHA Port
Bias T connection
1 Main 1 Yes BTS 2 DC MHA
1 Diversity 2 No BTS 1
2 Main 3 Yes BTS 2 DC MHA
2 Diversity 4 No BTS 1
3 Main 5 Yes BTS 2 DC MHA
3 Diversity 6 No BTS 1

Labelling The new MHA main feeder and ASTP to BTS jumper leads must be labelled
showing which port is connected to the MHA DC power port. Appropriate labels
are available in sets of 120 (10 standard sites worth) from:-

To order Quote “Tip Tag white 100” - “ Nokia Mini MHA DC feed” for O2
As a guide, price of these units as at March 2006 is
120 labels £70.80
Labels MUST be fitted on the feeder carrying DC power only, in the following
places, and as shown in the following Photos (Note: Top of mast not shown):-
• Main feeder, Top of tower, at input to MHA BTS 2 DC MHA port
• Main feeder from MHA BTS 2 DC MHA port, adjacent to ASTP
• Jumper from ASTP to BTS (adjacent to ASTP, jumper connected to BTS
MAIN port)
• Jumper from ASTP to BTS (adjacent to BTS MAIN port)
Labels should be fitted using appropriate tie wraps, securely fastened, with freedom
to move to be able to be read clearly as required. When rigging contractors are not

installing the ASTP to BTS jumpers, then the 6 labels required for this must be left
on site, loosely attached to the ASTP plate where they can be used by the jumper
installers. In this instance, the Nokia BTS installers / commissioning engineers will
need to install the final 6 jumper labels.

Testing Full testing procedures for UMTS MHA’s are covered in the O2 UK Antennas
System Testing Document (“Antenna System Testing” Document) [1], however,
due to the DC Power feed on one port only, the following general notes must be
considered when testing the new Nokia MHA:-
• When testing BTS 2 (The DC Supply Port) the Sitemaster can be
connected to power up Port 2 as per existing MHA’s by using the internal
Sitemaster Bias T option to power the MHA
• When testing BTS 1, the MHA must be powered up by using an external
Bias T and power supply connected to Port 2. The Sitemaster is connected
to BTS 1 to test this port in the usual way
• The Return Loss Pass / Fail Limits for the new MHA are the same as for
the previous version
• The current draw test limits are given in Table 2 below
Table 2. MHA Current Draw Specification for Nokia Mini MHA
Expected Current Draw Maximum MHA “Fail” current draw
180mA <190mA 230 to 295 mA
