The Promise of Rest

Hebrews 4:1-2
Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you
should seem to come short of it.
(2) For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word
preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.
1. Introduction
a. The God’s Word Translation Reads This Way
Hebrews 4:1-2 GWT
(1) God's promise that we may enter his place of rest still stands.
We are afraid that some of you think you won't enter his place of
rest.
(2) We have heard the same Good News that your ancestors
heard. But the message didn't help those who heard it in the past
because they didn't believe.

2. Main Section: God’s Promise of Rest is Still For Everyone

Isaiah 28:12
(12) To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and
this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear.

Matthew 11:28-30
(28) Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
(29) Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and
ye shall find rest unto your souls.
(30) For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

Hebrews 4:9-11
(9) There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God.
(10) For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as
God did from his.
(11) Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same
example of
unbelief.

3. The Holy Ghost-Your Spiritual Rest is a Comforter.
John 14:16
(16) And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may
abide with you forever;

4. Obtaining the Promised Rest.


a. Obtaining This Rest Is Simple
i. This All Became available because of CALVERY
b. When God Came Down And wrapped Himself in human flesh,
was beaten and then nailed to a cross, and Died… But on the third
day Rose again that we may have new life.

Peter Had This Revelation, and at the Day of Pentecost


He Got up and Preached to the hearts of the People,
that thought they were drunk,
He Told Them They Crucified Christ.
Acts 2:36
(36) Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that
same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.

as many as the Lord our God shall call.

The Parts That He made mention of were

B. Water Baptism by immersion in the name of Jesus Christ
for the remission of sins
C. The Infilling of the gift of the Holy Ghost by the evidence of
speaking in other tongues
5. Repentance
a. “Webster’s 1828 Dictionary States”
i. Real penitence; sorrow or deep contrition for sin, as an
offense and dishonor to God, a violation of his holy law, and
the basest ingratitude towards the God of infinite
benevolence. Repentance is a change of mind, or a
conversion from sin to God.
b. Repentance Comes from a Godly Sorrow.

2 Corinthians 7:10
(10) For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the
sorrow of the world worketh death.

c. “To See Your Sins as God See’s them, in their most natural form of
degradation and disgust, and implacability. And Realizing that you need
God’s help to change from that state in which you live, while asking him
to forgive you for those thing. And Vowing that with his help you shall
walk in his perfect will for your life,”
d. “When you Repent you will feel better, but that is not all where true
forgiveness comes in is Baptism”
6. Baptism
a. Water Baptism is a vital part of having your sins washed away

Acts 10:48
(48) And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then
prayed they him to tarry certain days.

Acts 2:41
(41) Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there
were added unto them about three thousand souls.

Acts 8:12-13
(12) But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of
God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.
(13) Then Simon himself believed also: and when he was baptized, he continued with
Philip, and wondered, beholding the miracles and signs which were done.

Acts 8:38
(38) And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the
water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him.

Acts 16:31;33
(31) And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy
house.
(33) And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their stripes; and was
baptized, he and all his, straightway.

Acts 19:5
(5) When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

Acts 22:16
(16) And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins,
calling on the name of the Lord.

b. Baptism is what washes away our sins, with the blood of Jesus
Christ.
7. Receiving The Gift of The Holy Ghost. (The Rest)
a. By The evidence of speaking in other tongues.
i. WHEN YOU REPENT YOU CAN RECEIVE THE HOLY
GHOST.
b. You Don’t have to be baptized before you can get the holy Ghost. If
you have repented and asked God to help you and forgive you, then you
can ask him for this wonderful gift of the Holy Ghost. Not everyone in
the bible got the Holy Ghost after they were baptized. Some got it
before.
Acts 10:47
(47) Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have
received the Holy Ghost as well as we?
c. They Had The Holy Ghost and then were baptized, Anyone tonight
under the sound of my voice can get the holy Ghost, and that wonderful
peace, and comfort that comes with it, Just as God for it He died and
rose to give it to you
Matthew 7:7
(7) Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be
opened unto you:
d. ASK GOD FOR IT. Don’t Beg You Don’t Have to beg. God
Promised it to you so if you have repented then Just ASK, And Believe

Mark 11:24
(24) Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe
that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.

e. When You Have Repented, and it is your Desire, God is ready to


give you this wonderful gift. Just believe that God Will Give it to you.
8. What Happens if you Don’t believe the promise, IF it ISN’T Mixed WITH
FAITH
a. NOTHING WILL HAPPEN
i. FAITH and Belief are a must to receiving this spiritual rest that
is the Holy Ghost. For in
Hebrews 4:2
(2) For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word
preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.
Hebrews 4:2 Amplified Bible
(2) For indeed we have had the glad tidings [Gospel of God] proclaimed to us just as
truly as they [the Israelites of old did when the good news of deliverance from
bondage came to them]; but the message they heard did not benefit them, because it
was not mixed with faith (with the leaning of the entire personality on God in absolute
trust and confidence in His power, wisdom, and goodness) by those who heard it;
neither were they united in faith with the ones [Joshua and Caleb] who heard (did
believe).

b. This translation Points out that the good news of a deliverance from
bondage came, they didn’t believe or hear the ones that Did, I am here
today to tell someone the YOU CAN BE DELIVERED TODAY FROM
WHAT EVER YOUR IN.
9. Closing
a. I Believe that the services that have lead up to this, were all for this
point, That I believe that God showed us This Morning, He wants to
Give you Peace, and rest, But Will you believe it. God is here tonight
ready to meet you in whatever state you’re in, if you’ll repent and ask
Him to Fill You with the Holy Ghost. That you can leave here tonight
with it.

b. Because The Great God of Heaven, Came Down and Wrapped


Himself in human flesh, was born of a woman, came to preach
repentance, and redemption for lost mankind,

Hebrews 9:12
(12) Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once
into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.
i. and was rejected by the vary creation that he came to save from
their sins, and was beaten to an inch of his life, then Nailed to a
cross, and Died

ii. BUT THE STORY didn’t stop there the third day
He rose again out of the grave, Victorious over Death, Hell and
The Grave. And Acended into Heaven to give everyone the
promised comforter, that which being the Holy Ghost. For He
Said

2 Peter 3:9
(9) The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is
longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come
to repentance.

c. If You Believe What I have preached today, and you are ready, to
enter into that place of rest, given only by the Holy Ghost

d. I Am Asking That You Come Down here today, and pray with us.
Because God Loved you so much that He Died For you. And He wants
to see you saved.
