INTRODUCTION

Participation of every learner during class discussion is the

important part of teaching and learning process. Class discussion is one

way to improve the ability of the learner to think crotically and reason

out. It is where the learner have opportunity to express their ideas and

opinion to develop them, it can only be possible if the teacher knew

his/her students interest and will depend upon what her teaching is all

about on whether it is understood by the students. But learning process

does not only mean depending on the the teacher but also with the

learners. Learning process needs the interest of the individual to learn.

The more they get interested, the more they learn. Using different kinds

of colorful materials on visual aids can help arouse the learners interest.

Learning is to gain knowlegde and understanding that isa supposed to be

a concern of every educator. To boost learners interest during class

discussions is a mode to achieve a successful teaching and learning

process.

Student teachers must train and gain enough knowledge in order

for them to become locally and globally competitive in the 21 st Century.

Cooperating teacher plays a crucial role in the development of student

teacher. They must be a role model and mentor who will help the

practice teachers analyzed and understand every single details about

1
teaching profession. Student-teachers should adopt and practice

everything about teaching arena.

A TEACHER’S PRAYER

LORD, help me to be a fine teacher,

To keep peace in the classroom,

Peace between my students and myself,

To be kind and gentle to each and every one of my students.

Help me to be merciful to my students,

To balance mercy and discipline in the right measure for each student,

To give genuine praise as much as possible,

To give constructive criticism in a manner that is patentable to my

students.

Help me remain conscientious enough to keep my lessons always

interesting,

To recognize what motivates each of my students,

To accept my student's limitations and not hold it against them.

Help me not to judge my students too harshly,

To be fair to all,

To be a good role model,

But most of all Lord,

Help me to show your love to all of my students.

2
Amen.

10
History of Core Gateway College, Inc.

During the post liberation period (1945-1949_, the Philippine Civil

Affairs Unit III helped in the rebuilding of San Jose, Nueva Ecija. It was

during those times after World War II that San Jose was like sea of

ashes; it suffered from the ravages of war, from destroyed houses to bad

roads to limited transportation. Within the four long years of struggle,

the education of youth was paralyzed. The city then, started building and

rebuilding itself from broken homes, broken families and shattered

dreams. In those times of rebuilding, schools were opened and reopened.

Since the city was living peacefully and full of homes again, Dr. Anacleto

E. Agaton, who had envisioned of building an educational institution,

brought to life the Colleges of the republic.

It was then Dr. Anacleto E. Agaton, an educator in heart and in

mind who studied in the 90’s in such distinguished institutions in

Columbia University (Superintendent of Schools), Cornell University

(Master of Arts in Education), Yale University (AB Law) and New York

University (Doctorate in Jurisprudence), brought to reality his dream of a

college that would serve the city and its surrounding towns with a

11
complete education. He formally established the Colleges of the Republic

(COR) in June 948 after its incorporation in April 29, 1948.

COR was given government recognition numbers 243, 267, 275,

276 and 278 series of 1949 on July 1, 1949 for the following courses:

Elementary, Academic Secondary, Four-Year Education (Bachelor of

Science in Education), Elementary Teacher Certificate (ETC) and

Associate in Arts.

The principal reason the Colleges of the Republic was established

was the huge need in San Jose and its surrounding areas for a

conveniently located institution that would provide a solid college

education for a large number of high school graduates that would have

had to face the huge expenses of going to Manila or other cities order to

obtain a college degree. There were also numerous public school teachers

who need complete degrees in Education that they had been unable to

pursue because of World War II. With a college within the proximity they

were able to continue to keep their teaching jobs while studying in the

evening and on Saturdays. This is why the courses initially offered by

COR were primarily geared toward degrees in Education.

In 1956, additional courses- the Master of Arts in Education, Four-

year Normal (Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education), Collegiate

Commercial Course and Four- year Liberal Arts (AB) – were authorized to

12
be offered by the College. It was during that time when summer classes

were opened for secondary, undergraduate and graduate courses. In

1975, the Five –Year night course, Five-month Stenography, Five-month

Typewriting course and Two-year Junior Secretarial Course were given

government recognition.

Several new offerings were launched in the succeeding years. In

the ‘90’s, COR opened its doors to the age of Information Technology

when the Bachelor of Science and Associate in Computer Science were

initiated. Because of the growing numbers of parents of toddlers who are

eager to set foot in a school during this decade, COR gave birth to its Pre-

elementary course after it earned recognition (No. E-20 series of 1996) in

1996. Another graduate program, Master of Arts in Public

Administration, became accessible.

For over half a century COR has provided the people of San Jose

City and its neighboring communities with quality education. The school,

through 68 years of teaching has come to understand the needs of the

community and the special role that an educational institution plays in

promoting the growth and well-being of a developing city. In order to

keep abreast with current trends and changes, COR continually

improves it in terms of facilities and services.

Dr. Agaton’s vision has been kept alive through the years.

Thousands of students have passed through its doors since 1948 and

13
many have gone on occupying distinguished positions in government

agencies, in the academic and in the private sector

The Colleges of the Republic, now CORE GATEWAY COLLEGE, INC

(CGCI) grows with the city each year. As it does, the students, teachers

and administration continue its commitment to provide distinctive

quality and unmatched services. In November, 2015, CGCI changed in

management. At present, it is managed by the owners of Friendship

Superstores, who are based in Tarlac City.

Department of Education
Region III
Division of San Jose City
CAANAWAN HIGH SCHOOL
San Jose City, Nueva Ecija

HISTORY OF CAANAWAN HIGH SCHOOL

Started as an annex of Constancio Padilla National High School

(CPNHS) in September 2007, Caanawan High School (CHS) opened its

operation with 79 students three teachers who were mostly department

heads under the leadership of Dr. Tristan L. Manzano Sr. head of the

Science Department of CPNHS as the officer- in charge.

Located at a portion of a lot registered in the name of the

local government at the back of Caanawan Elementary School along

Maharlika Road, Caanawan, San Jose City, Nueva Ecija, its opening

benefits the neighboring barangays; Abar 1 st, Abar 2nd, Sto Tomas, Disol,

SinipitBubon, Camanacsacan and other small sitios adjacent to these

barangays.

An initial of two- building project with nine classrooms were

constructed in S.Y 2005-2006 through the Countrywide Development

18
Fund of late Hon. Eleuterio R. Violago, Representative of the 2nd District

of Nueva Ecija . The buildings were turned over to the school under the

administration of Dr. Macario A. Cabico, former Principal of Costancio

Padilla National High School.

It was not immediately opened the following year due to the

moratorium issued by the Department of Education. However, the

following year, the opening was pushed through under the

administration of Mrs. Estelita R. Cruz the principal who continued the

project left by Dr. Cabico who retired in 2005.

Fund was set aside by Cong. Violago for the operation of this

school. The mother school also helped in realizing the opening of the

school by sending teachers. LSB teachers that time were also not

available, so in the first quarter of that school year, Dr. Manzano, the

OIC, requested the three male teachers, most of them were Department

Heads, to serve as teachers. They were Mr. Marianito C. Torres, MAPEH

Department Head, Mr. Lordennis T. Leonardo, Head of Values Education

Department and Mr. Marcos C. Vizon, OIC of the English Department.

On September 3, 2007, the opening was announced during

the Flag Raising Ceremony at CPNHS main. The freshmen residing in the

barangays were asked to transfer to CHS the following day with the said

teachers.

19
Two classes with a total of 76 students responded to the

announcements and transferred to the annex site. This comprised 39

male students and 37 female students, the pioneer freshmen which were

divided into two classes I-A and I-B.

Weeks after, through the assistance of Local Government, the

pioneer batch of teachers was deployed. They were Miss Rhodina G. San

Adres, Miss Andrea O. Lauriaga( nowNario) and Miss Rhodalyn de

Chavez.

In 2008, a new Officer-in- Charge was designated by the

Office of the School Division Superintendent of the Division of Nueva

Ecija. She was also an OIC that time at Sto. Nino 3 rd High School, San

Jose City, the concurrent Department Head in English at CPNHS, Mrs.

Susan T. de Leon

Several months after her deployment, a lot of changes were made

in the school. Additional equipment and other educational materials were

delivered from stakeholders. A year later, enrollment increased and

additional teachers were deployed both from the national government

and from the local government (LSB)

In January 2010, Mrs. de Leon was finally given the principal item

position. She was promoted as full pledge Principal. Year after, more

improvements in the physical aspect of the school were made. Aside from

additional buildings, a gymnasium with a stage was also constructed.

20
In February, 2015, Mrs. de Leon was promoted to higher position.

She is now one of the Education Program Supervisors under the

Curriculum Implementation Division in the Division Office, a position

that she also concurrently held for more than three years while being a

principal.

Now, the school leadership is given to a successor, Mr. Marcos C.

Vizon. He was the Officer- in-charge of the English Department at

CPNHS while Mrs. de Leon was also OIC in other schools. After being

promoted to HT-III and later as HT-IV and Officer- In- Charge of CPNHS,

he was promoted to Principal I after passing the P-1 test and ranked 1st

in the screening of P-1 applicants in the Division of San Jose City.

With his experience from his former positions, he will now

continue serving in independent schools. His first assignment is this

School Improvement Plan that he will start as he also starts his new role

in the Department of Education.

FIRST DAY AND ORIENTATION

Last November 29, 2018, I woke up so early. Prepared myself for

the first day of Practice Teaching which is the deployment day. I and my

Co-Practice Teachers where deployed in Caanawan Natinal High School.

Ma’am Cirka (Secretary of the School) oriented us and she explained the

rules and regulations of school. We are glad because she entertained us

very well. She also shows hospitality and we are so thankful for that.

I, together with my six filipino classmates went to the head of the

Filipino Department which is Ma’am Lorelie Rebustillo for the delegation

of Cooperating Teachers (CT) . Ma’am Jessica Imperial is one of the 4

filipino teachers. Evariza and I, are so proud of it beacuse she is our

cooperating teacher. After the delegation Eva and I, wento to the DRR to

look for Ma’am Imperial . Suddenly, we didn’t see Ma’am Imperial. So

her Co-teacher went to the grade 10 Classroom and looked for her. We

26
found Ma’am Imperial in the Grade 10 Consul Classroom. She

introduced her name as well as we introduced our name. Meanwhile,

Ma’am Imperial gave our schedules and the sections which we are

teaching . December 7, 2018 it is my first day of teaching and my first

time to met my students. I am grateful beacuse i felt warmth welcome of

my students. In that day, I told to myself that I need to become positive

in all things that I can do and never give up, because if you give up, you

will lose the ability to learn new things and move forward with your life .

I know, it just the beginning of my journey towards the real world of

teaching. Little by little, my dream to become an educator is now coming

into fruition.

27
WORKING WITH THE COOPERATING TEACHER

Mrs. Jessica A. Imperial is 27 years old; she is lovable, hospitable

and very sweet. She finished her college in Central Luzon State

University took Bachelor of Secondary Education Major in Filipino. Mrs.

Jessica A. Imperial (Teacher III) is a Licensed Teacher; she started

teaching at St. John Academy in Guagua Pampangga and now she is a

teacher in Caanawan National High School.

In the process of my teaching, I saw the dedication of my

cooperating teacher as a Professional Teacher. She served as a second

mother to her students and also to me. Inside the classroom she is strict

because she wants to acquire knowledge to her students but they didn’t

know how much kind ma’am Imperial is.

Working with Ma’am Imperial is such a pleasure beacuse for me,

she is the mentor who taught and developed me to become a better

28
teacher. But of course in the first place, I am shy to Ma’am Imperial on

how to approach her . But I overcomed it, in order for me to have a

harmonious relationship with my Cooperating Teachers. In terms of

teaching and handling classes, Ma’am Imperial was always their for me

to give such advices and techniques in handling a class. I am very

thankful to her, I know in the future, I would be a good teacher like her.

If only I could extend the time working with her to gain more experience,

I would take the privelege.

WORKING WITH THE STUDENTS

No teacher must attempt to teach a class without a prepared

lesson plan. Lesson plan should be well-studied and prepared. It served

as a guide to the teachers to be able to teach systematically.

In teaching , they say that, students are the sole reason why

education existed. They are the center of teaching learning process. As a

great educators said, “there is no teaching without learners.” Teaching is

really a complex process. Teachers played a vital role in dealing with the

students. This challenging role goes as well to a student’s teacher. The

students have their individual differences. They have unique attitudes,

behaviors, interests, skills and abilities.

I was assigned to handle Grade 10 which is the Grade 10

Ambassador and Brrister. They are almost 120 students and they live in

different barangay. Dealing with almost 120 students is not easy because

29
of their different attitudes and personality. Some of my students are

responsible and quiet but sometimes they are noisy and I need to be

angry in front for them to become quiet and t listened. As a teacher we

need to use various techniques and methods that cater the individual

differences and for having a good relationship to your students.

WORKING WITH THE CO-STUDENT TEACHER

In Caanawan National High School, we are 20 practice teachers

came from different schools which is the College of Research and

Teachnology and San Jose Christian Colleges. Working with my Co-

Practice teacher is a great previlage because I gained another group of

friends. We had a good relationship to everyone beacuse I know it is one

of the main ingredient to have a harmonius environment. We help each

other in terms of discussing such lesson and especially making visual

aids.

I am thankful because we build such good relationship in the short

period of time that we are together. We make memories such as

performing on the event of the school and just simply talked and

meanwile laughed.

30
WORKING WITH THE COMMUNITY

Teaching is a form of a communjtu service. People in the community

believe that a teacher is a role model, a person to be idolized, so that

everyone in the community will be productive .

A community is a group of people with common culture and

interest who live in a certain place and work harmoniously for a common

good. In the field of teaching, we also need to communicate not only on

the teachers and pupils but also we need to talk their parents

I am fulfilled because I build a good relationship with the people

around the Caanawan National High School. When they saw me they

will greet me, as well as I greet them with a beautiful smiled. It was a

31
good feeling, because I have given a chance to mingle with the people in

the community. Before I entered in the school I was just an ordinary

student but at that moment I felt that I’m already a teacher because all

people around the community showed their respect even I’m a student

teacher.

WORKING WITH THE OTHER SCHOOL PERSONEL

Being a student teacher does not only mean that were dealing only

to our respective cooperating teacher, there were staffs inside the school

to mingle with such as principal, fellow teachers, staffs and caretakers.

Every time I went to school I always reflect a smile and greet those

people, not only the teachers but also the guard and other person

working in the school. Each of them gave support during my practice

teaching. If we need something they were always there to help us.

Always remember the phrase “Always wear your smile because

your smile can change the world”.

32
Final Demonstration

33
INSIGHT GAINED

Practice teaching is the most important of the training of student

teachers. It is this training process into the real world of school that

prepares the student in making the transition from trainee to

professional.

The teaching program of the College of Education helped in

producing progressive and highly equipped teachers. It offers various

ways in acquiring and understanding the teaching learning process. In

our student teaching, I applied all learning I gained prior to the

program. All the approaches, methods, techniques and even the

disciplinary measures that I’ve learned were used.

34
I learned a lot, especially from my cooperating teacher that she

imparted a knowledge and experience to me. She did her best to made

me equipped and competent student teacher. I can say that there is

changes happened in my life, with the help of my cooperating teacher, I

overcome my stage fright. And I feel great and I know that I could be a

good teacher and I can mold the young minds of students because I was

trained and teaching is my chosen profession.

RECOMMENDATION

I highly recommend my cooperating school as well as the teachers

at Caanawan National High School. The school was the best training

ground for the next student teacher. I also recommend my cooperating

teacher Mrs. Jessica A. Imperial . She was great teacher to me and I

learned a lot of things to her in terms of teaching. She was very

supportive and considerate.

I also recommend to the next generation of student-teachers to

perseued and overcome the rigours of student-teaching. It is really

35
laborious and time consuming to prepare materials for teaching and the

lesson plan, but these are essential in teaching. Add to these your

natural passion in teaching and the love and compassion to the learners.
