The English language is an important tool for Malaysia in its efforts to be
competitive in this era of globalization. Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamed
(2002) stressed the importance of the English Language by urging students to
master English so that they will not only be able to communicate with foreigners
but also surf the Internet to keep up with the development in Engineering and
Science. It is a known fact that the language is becoming more important as the
medium of instruction at the university level. However, students seem to be
totally oblivious to the importance of English. In general, through observation, it
can be seen that Prisma University (PU) students are not confident in reading,
writing and speaking in English. The situation is not helped by the fact that most
lectures in PU are conducted in Bahasa Malaysia. This means that students do
not need to refer to English reference materials to pass exams.PU with its
vision to be a World Class University needs to provide a conducive
environment to nurture English. Graduates produced by the university need to
be proficient in English as these graduates deal mostly with human resource.
Therefore, a study to find out about the use of English among PU students is
vital.

1.2 Purpose

The objectives of this study are:

1. To find out what factors discourage PU students from using English


2. To investigate when students do actually use English
3. To explore best ways to motivate PU students to use English

1.3 Scope

This study focuses on the use of English language among PU students. A sample
of 100 PU students were selected randomly for the survey. The selection was
made based on the different courses and year of study.

2.0 LITERATURE REVIEW

2.1 In the article, English Language Is a Must? (The Star, 16 November 2010, p26),
Irham Ahmad points out several reasons on why English should be made a must
pass subject in Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM). From 2016. He states that ……
2.2 According to Jariah Roslan (2012), in her article, Embracing English as Global
Language, university students must be proficient enough in English so that can
compete fairly in the future job market. Jariah talks about the crucial needs of the
students to communicate well in English….
2.3 The importance of English language especially among university students is
discussed thoroughly in the article, Oh My English!, by Sufian Hadi
(http://www.goenglish.com). In this article, he argues that…….
2.4 Arshad Khalil and Norman (2011) mention that, “university students with a good
command of English have a better chance to land their dream job” (p. 85).

2.5 One research states that “poor command of English affects job chances as most
employers are looking for job applicants who can deliver ideas in English”
(Edward & Thomas, 2009, p. 85). → using direct quotation

3.0 RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This study was carried out at Prisma University which is located in Kajang, Selangor for
6 months. 100 respondents from various social background and academic courses such
as mechanical engineering and A-Level UK programme were selected randomly.
Samples were taken from all types of study level: A-Level, diploma and bachelor. The
researcher distributed 1 set of questionnaire which consists of 3 sections with total of 50
questions. In addition, the researcher also conducted 3 rounds of interview with 50 of the
respondents
