Editorial
In last year's Editorial I indicated that a strategy
review for the future development of the journal was
being undertaken. This resulted in proposals being
drawn up for making major changes to the journal.
The most important of these are broadening the
scope from a regional to an international journal,
sharpening the focus to relate journal interests to
wider theoretical and conceptual developments in

the social sciences and relating housing and
planning more clearly to other areas of policy,
including systems of welfare in general as well as
new developing areas such as gender and the
environment. To achieve this, the journal will be
undergoing a change of name and will have new
international Editorial and Advisory Boards made
up of researchers who are at the forefront of the
latest developments in housing and planning
research in their respective disciplines.
This will not mean that the journal will lose its
Scandinavian focus. The journal is owned by the
Institute for Housing Research at Uppsala Univer-
sity from where it will continue to be managed and
edited. In addition, the Editorial Board will have
strong Scandinavian representation on it. This
reflects the high quality of housing and planning
research that is produced in the Scandinavian
countries. The journal will therefore continue to
cover housing and planning developments in
Scandinavia as one of its central tasks. In addition,
the journal will keep a close brief on the scene in the
wider Baltic region and the remainder of East-
Central Europe.
Housing research is continuing to become more
international. The European Network for Housing
Research, managed from Uppsala University, now
has over a thousand members. Most of these, as one
would expect, are in Europe but there are a signi-
ficant number from outside Europe and membership
spans the world. The bi-annual conferences held
under its auspices attract around three hundred
participants, with a significant proportion from
Scandinavia, which, in relation to population is
considerably over-represented, demonstrating the
continuing strength of Scandinavian housing and
planning research. This year is a conference year,
with the Centre for Housing Management and
Development at Cardiff University College of
Wales as host. The conference will be held 7-11
September and the journal will be represented by its
publisher and editor.
The journal as usual welcomes the submission of
papers for peer review with a view to publication. In
addition, we welcome shorter reports from confer-
ences and seminars in our field. We also welcome
presentations of major policy changes that may be
taking place as well as comments and debate on
articles published. Our aim is to provide a lively
forum for the exchange of ideas in housing and
planning that covers the field in its widest.
