LAB REPORT ON CBR COMPACTION TEST

(report-2)

Department of Civil Engineering

Submitted by: Under the guidance of:

CWID: 11761167

Date(15-03-2015)
OBJECTIVE

To find the CBR value of the soil in controlled moisture content and in molded
conditions.

SCOPE

CBR test is widely used for the design of flexible pavement, thickness of the
pavement. It helps to find the strength of the subgrade, sub-base, base course.
It gives a parameter which can enable a designer to estimate the loads that can
be taken by the soil.

EQUIPMENT USED:

Compression machine
Dial gauge
Timer
Rammer
Spatula
Beaker
Split mould
Vernier caliper
Balance
Sampling boxes
Micro wave oven
Mixing tray

PREPARATRION SAMPLE

Disturbed sample.

TEST STANDARD

This test is considered from ASTM D1557 .

TEST PROCEDURE:

1) Sample of soil to be taken in tray and known amount of water is added.

2) The weight of mold is to be noted and a layer of soil is placed, it is to be

rammed with 56 blows.

3) In similar way another 4 layers are to be placed and each layer is

rammed for 56 blows.

4) After filling out the mold the top attachment is to be removed and
surface is to be leveled.

5) Weight of the mold is noted.

5) The mold is placed in compaction machine with a plate at top.

6) The piston is placed at center and near to the surface of soil.

7) The readings were noted after the machine starts working.

8) Readings are to be noted to plot a graph for different moisture content

values.

9) A sample of soil is taken in three boxes with lids and weighed.

10) They are to be placed in oven for a period of 24 hours and should be
weighed again.
