No School Monday, September 7, 2020 in observance of Labor Day!

Parents: Our first week of distance learning is done! I want to thank all of the families for supporting their children
as we worked through technology issues. As Mrs. Heinlen and I popped in and out of sessions all last week, I saw
so many students focused, working on lessons, and parents providing support when needed. The students were
getting the hang of muting their mics, turning their cameras on/off, and utilizing the chat box when needed. I’m
looking forward to seeing learning continuing to flow, increase with higher standards, and the students to become at
ease with maneuvering around their technology devices and platforms. I was truly impressed with so many of our
classrooms last week!

Administration doing WIDA Screening Test: Mrs. Heinlen and I will be conducting the English Second
Language state screening test called WIDA this week Tuesday through Thursday 3:30-5:45pm. Families who have
students required to take the screening test (new to our district) have been notified.

Technology Update: We have Ipads for our Preschool students and they will be ready for a Friday check-out/pick-
up from 9:00am -11 am. We are having 15 more Chromebooks put into Destiny this week and those will be ready
for check-out/pick-up on Friday from 9am-11am as well.

Milers: Our neighborhood Cox Cub Students are working on their Milers! Our Huff family got together with a few
other families and started their kids on Milers in their neighborhood since we cannot be at school getting our miles
in! If you would like to participate, walk with your student(s) and email me their names with miles walked and
we’ll add them to our Weekly Newsletter when they hit the Miler’s milestone marks. So Awesome Cox Cubs!

Cyber Cox Cub of the Week: Congratulations to the following students for being an awesome Cyber Cox Cub
Student last week in Grades 1, 3, and 5:

AR (Accelerated Reader) (second posting): We are tracking books read this year during our distance learning.
Students will continue to read books, take their AR tests online, and we will keep track of tests taken and books
read. We traditionally count points earned from the comprehension tests taken, put the points in gradebooks to
count for a reading grade in K-5, and then award medals based on point totals at the end of the year. For distance
learning, we will track books read and make grade-level book totals for students to earn medals. Comprehension
test points will still provide a count for grades but not in the same capacity as last year. Grade levels will be
meeting within the next couple weeks to determine weekly book counts, grading, etc. So…Cox Cubs…start your
book reading!

Attendance (final posting): All teachers will be taking attendance in the morning at first hour and then again after
the lunch break. Specialists will be recording attendance as well (not in IC but with a google attendance tracker).
Here are the attendance guidelines from the district:
 A student is counted in attendance if…
o They attend their live academic sessions (am and pm) with their teachers.
o The parent communicates with teacher that the student will watch a recorded session of the live
lessons and then complete the assigned work.
o The students turns in all work from the lives sessions within 7 school days.
 The teachers have the capabilities now to mark a student DNP (distant learning not participated) then
remove it if the students watch the recorded session and turn in the classwork.
 If your child is sick or cannot attend the live sessions due to medical appointments you need to complete
the absence form on our website and Dojo/message the teacher. The absence will be excused and the student
has 7 days to make up missed work.
 A student will be marked “unverified” if no communication is made to the school and/or teacher for an
absence due to illness, pre-arranged, or medical appointments.
 A student is marked tardy if…
o There are repeated excuses of failed technology or repeated late entries into live sessions.
o The student is repeatedly entering and exiting the live sessions throughout the lesson/instruction (K-
5).
o The student does not attend the live sessions (when offered) at the end of the day.
o After 3 tardies the code becomes an “unverified” absence to the state.

Recorded Sessions: If a teacher does not have 100% in attendance for their live lesson sessions then they will record a “mini”
lesson of what was taught for students to view.
