Conductors

1. Scope/introduction
This document forms the technical requirement for purchase of conductors for Energinet.
The aim of the document is to give the manufacturer of conductors an overview of Ener-
ginet’s requirements and to guarantee the performance of conductors over their lifetime.

The technical requirements are formed in such a way that they fit into the procurement
procedure, where some requirements are minimum requirements and some requirements
form part of the evaluation. It is stated for each requirement whether it is a minimum re-
quirement. Minimum requirements must be followed. If not followed, the tender will be
rejected.

For phase conductors, be aware of the requirements for AC or DC resistance, cf. sec-
tion 5.3.

3. Dependences and conditions

For ACSR phase conductors in Energinet’s grid, the normal tension is between
2 2
55-65 N/mm at 0° C. For AAAC, the normal tension is between 50-60 N/mm at 0° C. For
2
earth conductors, the tension is 90 N/mm at 0° C due to the higher amount of steel.

Special requirements for damping must be stated in a tender for Energinet.

4. Performance requirements
Conductors are intended to last for 40-50 years (depending on conductor size) under the
conditions described under 'Technical requirements' and the Danish weather conditions.

Lifetime expectancy of about the intended lifetime and documentation of it will be evaluat-
ed as positive in a tender for the suggested conductor type.

5. Technical requirements
In general, the technical requirements apply to all conductor types with additional re-
quirements for OPGW and phase conductors.

Doc. 13/90592-263 – ETS-0119 Klassificering: Offentlig/public 4/11

Conductors

5.1 Protection against corrosion

The conductors must be able to withstand the climatic conditions and the mechanical im-
pact to which they are exposed for a minimum period of 40 (forty) years without reducing
the mechanical and electrical qualities and to an extent, where they are still able to fulfil
the present requirements.

The conductors have inner strands greased with OCG 5000. The grease must be applied in
accordance with the specifications from the grease supplier. For HT conductors, OCG 6000
is required.

The conductors are delivered with the inner core lubricated to the two outer layers for
400 kV and to the first outer layer for 132/150 kV and earth conductors.

Figure 1 Lubrication of 400 kV conductors Figure 2 Lubrication of 132/150 kV and

earth conductors

The greasing fulfils the requirements in DS/EN 50182, but must not vary more than  10%
from the calculated nominal amount of grease.

The nominal amount of grease needs to be calculated, and the density stated by the grease
supplier will form the basis for the determination of the nominal amount of grease. The
nominal amount of grease must at least be based on a fill factor of 90%.

The conductor manufacturer is able to document the current quality surveillance of the
greasing.

The grease application method and the tests performed to check the quality of the greasing
must be described in the tender. An automatic stop of the stringing machine in case of
empty drum or stop of pump is preferred.

Doc. 13/90592-263 – ETS-0119 Klassificering: Offentlig/public 5/11

Conductors

5.2 Breaking load

For all types of conductors, there is correlation between diameter and minimum breaking
load of the conductor. As a minimum requirement, the offered conductor must at least
have a breaking load as listed below:

Diameter [mm] 16.0 19.9 21.8 27.7 31.7 32.8 36.2 39.2 45.0
Min. breaking load [kN] 80 70 85 125 165 175 210 250 280

5.3 Real resistance

The real resistance of phase conductors is important because of its great influence on the
line loss and load capability. In the tender material, the loss value in terms of EUR/mΩ/km
is given. As a minimum requirement, Energinet reserves the right to perform a post-
delivery measurement to the specified values for resistance for phase conductors. For con-
ductor or parts thereof, if the real resistance is higher or the conductivity is lower than the
value provided by the Tenderer, a penalty of 1.25 times the measured extra loss value will
be applied.

The guaranteed resistance is either AC or DC depending on the purpose of the conductor

application. Normally, it will be AC resistance unless otherwise stated in the tender materi-
al.

The post measurement must be taken on the complete conductor and may be taken as a
DC measurement, if the relation between AC and DC is known from other tests.

Depending on the number of drums measured, each measurement will count for the
percentage of drums it represents.

Example of a loss value of 500 EUR/mΩ/km, drum length of 1900 m and 10% of the drums
measured:

Specified value: 42.27 mΩ/km

Post-calculated value: 42.82 mΩ/km
Penalty/drum = (Post value – specified value) x penalty factor x loss value x drum
length
Penalty/drum = (42.82-42.27) x 1.25 x 500 x 1.900 = 653 EUR/drum

If 10% of the drums are measured, it means that the measured drums represent 10 drums
in total.

Total penalty = Penalty/drum x number of represented drums = 653 x 10 = 6530 EUR.

5.4 Creep
The creep of conductors is important because of its influence on the load capability. As a
minimum requirement, the tender must supply information of the conductor type creep
performance. In case a type test has not been performed, the supplier shall calculate the

Doc. 13/90592-263 – ETS-0119 Klassificering: Offentlig/public 6/11

Conductors

expected creep and do the test before delivery. If the calculated creep is less than the
measured creep, Energinet reserves the right to reject the delivery.

5.5 Specification of optical transmission qualities for OPGW

For OPGW, it is a minimum requirement that the optical transmission qualities follow:

 ETS-0106

6. Design requirements
The design of conductors for Energinet's grid has been related to the Canadian norm
CAN/CSA-C49, in which the most common sizes of conductors are listed in the two tables

The main dimensions of the most common conductors in Energinet's grid form a list of
standard diameter for conductors.

Allowed diameter [mm] 16.0 19.9 21.8 27.7 31.7 32.8 36.2 45.0

It is a minimum requirement that any conductor offered has to be comparable with one of
the above allowed diameters +0 /-0.1 mm as a type design.

The design requirements for new conductors are separated by the type of conductors al-
lowed for Energinet's grid as listed below:

 AAAC phase conductor for new lines and replacement of old conductors without
upgrading
 ACSS and composite core conductors for upgrading
 ACSR for ground wire or OPGW

All shapes of individual strands, like RW, TW or ZW, are allowed for the conductor design.

6.1 AAAC conductors

The design of new AAAC conductor is related to the same type of ACSR conductor by the
diameter. An AAAC design must comply with its related ACSR conductor, so that the me-
chanical loads on the tower are less than or equal to the load of the ACSR conductor under

Doc. 13/90592-263 – ETS-0119 Klassificering: Offentlig/public 8/11

Conductors

ice load criteria described in DS/EN 50341-2-5. The sag in the span must be less than or
equal to the related ACSR conductor at the same current capacity up to a conductor tem-
perature of 80° C for the ACSR conductor.

The conductor temperature should be calculated with the following prerequisites:

Emissions/absorption coefficient of the conductor: 0.6

2
Solar radiation: 900 W/m
Wind perpendicular to the conductor: 0.6 m/s
Ambient temperature: 20° C

6.2 ACSS and composite conductor

N/A

6.3 ACSR ground wire or OPGW

The ACSR ground wire must follow CAN/CSA-C49 for Dorking.

The OPGW's physical dimensions as well as mechanical and electrical data must be as close
as possible to those of a Dorking conductor.

7. Testing
All tests and measurements are provided by the manufacturer. In general, all conductors
must be tested in accordance with DS/EN 50182.

Energinet has the right to witness any factory or type test and must receive notice hereof
at least two weeks prior to the test.

AC resistance test must be carried out on the complete conductor for the phase conductor
to prove what is stated in the data sheet. It will be evaluated as positive, if the test method
for AC resistant is stated in the tender.

7.1 Type test

All types of conductors need to be type-tested. Type test from previous deliveries of the
same conductor type is sufficient. Type test may be carried out after contract signing, but
must be carried out prior to delivery.

As a minimum, the type test must include:

 Stress-strain test
 Coefficient of thermal elongation
 Breaking load
 Joints in strands before stranding (if any joints)
 Creep test in accordance with DS/EN 61395

Doc. 13/90592-263 – ETS-0119 Klassificering: Offentlig/public 9/11

Conductors

 AC resistance test
 DC resistance test

Type test of AC resistance has to be done by an independent laboratory.

7.2 Sample test

As minimum requirements, sample test must include:

 Cross section area

 Conductor diameter
 Mass per unit length
 Breaking load of strands
 Surface condition
 Grease content
 Lay ratio and direction
 Resistance test

The sample resistance test must be carried out on at least 10% of the conductors/drums
and cover the number of drums that it represents. This means test of 10% covers 10 drums,
test of 20% covers 5 drums and test of 50% covers 2 drums, etc.

The resistance test may be carried out as either AC or DC resistance test. If carried out as
DC for an AC project, the relation between AC and DC has to be multiplied to find the
resultant AC resistance.

8. Drums
Minimum requirements for drums are:

 The conductors must be delivered on cable drums with a conductor length limited
by the drum size and weight, unless otherwise stated in the delivery terms.

 The conductors must be delivered neatly rolled up on the drums in such a way
that the conductors are not damaged during transport and installation.

 The dimensions of the drums on which the conductors are delivered must comply
with the specifications below:

Maximum drum diameter: 2600 mm

Maximum drum width: 1300 mm
Diameter of the axle hole: between minimum 110 and maximum 130 mm
Maximum weight: 6000 kg

 If the conductors are delivered on steel drums, it must be stated in the tender.

Doc. 13/90592-263 – ETS-0119 Klassificering: Offentlig/public 10/11

Conductors

 Furthermore, it must be stated if the conductors are delivered on disposable or

reusable drums. If delivered on reusable drums, Energinet must be able to have
the drums at its disposal for at least twelve (12) months free of charge. The cost of
reusable drum rental exceeding 12 months must be stated in the tender. Also, the
price (per piece) for keeping the reusable drums (for the spare conductor) must be
stated in the tender.

9. Spare parts
Not relevant.

10. Documentation
For tendering, the data sheet for the offered conductors must as a minimum state:

 Conductor dimensions
 Conductor weight
 Amount of grease (nominal, smallest and largest amount of grease in kg/km)
 Nominal breaking strength
 Modulus of elasticity
 Coefficient of linear expansion
 Electrical resistance, both AC and DC resistance at 20° C for phase conductors
 Linear and non-linear cable files of the proposed conductor for the program
PLS-CADD from Power Line Systems. The file must include creep information.

It is a minimum requirement that in the tender, the Tenderer accepts that the following
documentation must be supplied for all conductors at by the time of delivery:

 Test reports of relevant tests for the conductor type, as a minimum the test de-
scribed in DS/EN 50182.
 Weatherproof labelling of the drums stating exact conductor length and type.
 Updated linear and non-linear cable files of the proposed conductor for the pro-
gram PLS-CADD from Power Line Systems. The file must include creep information.
