ABSTRACT

The Apple A13 Bionic is a 64-bit ARM-based system on a chip (SoC), designed
by Apple Inc. It appears in the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro.

The Apple A13 Bionic features an Apple-designed 64-bit ARMv8.3-A six-core

CPU, with two high-performance cores running at 2.65 GHz called Lightning and
four energy-efficient cores called Thunder. The Lightning cores feature machine
learning accelerators called AMX blocks. Apple claims the AMX blocks are six
times faster at matrix multiplication than the Apple A12's Vortex cores. The AMX
blocks are capable of up to one trillion 8-bit operations per second.
Apple claims the two high performance cores are 20% faster with 30% reduction in
power consumption, and the four high efficiency cores are 20% faster with a 40%
reduction in power when compared to the A12. The A13 also integrates an Apple-
designed four-core graphics processing unit (GPU) with 20% faster graphics
performance and 40% lower power consumption than the A12's. Apple claims their
A13's eight-core Neural Engine dedicated neural network hardware is 20% faster
and consumes 15% lower power than the A12's.

INRTODUCTION OF BIONIC CHIP

• A bionic chip is a System on Chip (SoC) processor developed by the Apple.

• They integrate one or more ARM-BASED processing cores(CPU),a graphic

processing unit(GPU) and cache memory.

• They are manufactured by SAMSUNG and TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor

Manufacturing Company).

• The Apple A13 Bionic graphics card is an integrated GPU in the A13 Bionic
chip found in the iPhone 11 series. It includes 4 cores and offers a 20%
better performance and 40% less power consumption compared to the A12
Bionic in the iPhone Xs series (according to Apple).

• It is manufactured in the second generation 7nm process (with EUV) and

therefore very energy efficient.

• This chip is a follow on from the A12 Bionic which we dug into last
year and noted how it offered a solid performance hike and graphical grunt,
though it was packaged in a rather lacklustre incremental iPhone model.

A13 BIONIC CHIP

• The A13 BIONIC CHIP was launched by the APPLE in November 2019
• The A13 BIONIC CHIPis the fastest processor in the smartphone till date.
• The A13 BIONIC CHIP consists of about 8.5 BILLION transistors in it.
• It is capable of performing 1 TRILLION operations per second.
• The A13 BIONIC CHIP is a 64-bit ARM based on System on Chip.

SPECIFICATIONS

Designed by APPLE.

Common manufactured are Samsung and TSMC.

Maximum clock rate upto2.65 Ghz.

Integration technology- 7nm.

Micro architecture used- ARMv8.3-A.

Cores- Octa core.

GPU Used – Apple designed core 4.

Predecessor – Apple A12.

ARCHITECTURE

• It is a 64-bit Arm based System on Chip.

• It has the fastest CPU present in the Smartphone.
• It has the fastest GPU present in the Smartphone.
• It has the Advanced Neural Engine which helps in getting faster results and
also in the Face Scanning.
• It has Core ML-3 which helps the developers for the machine learning in
Apps.
FEATURES

• The Apple A13 Bionic is the fastes processor in any smartphone till date.
• The A13 Bionic chip is best in various parameters like speed, performance,
accuracy, smoothness and security.
• Bleeding-edge 7nm+ process.
• Apple always uses the very best manufacturing process technology available
from its foundry partners (which has almost always been TSMC). Today,
that means it is among the first to use TSMC’s new second-generation 7
nanometer process. It’s similar to the 7nm process that availed itself so well
in last year’s A12 Bionic and processors like AMD’s Ryzen 3000 series
• Catching up and pulling ahead in GPU performance.
• If there’s one area where competing smart phone processors have been able
to beat Apple, it’s in graphics performance. Apple’s GPUs deliver real-
world performance that is among the best in the business, but some cross-
platform benchmarks will favor the latest Android phones.
• Better power efficiency
• Perhaps just as impressive as the performance improvements in the A13
Bionic is the increase in energy efficiency. Apple says the A13’s GPU and
high-efficiency CPU cores use 40 percent lower power, while the high-
performance CPU cores use 30 percent less and the Neural Engine uses 15
percent less.
• Apple says this is achieved partly by having hundreds of voltage domains to
lower power to major parts of the chip when not in use, and hundreds of
thousands of clock-gating domains, to disable logic gates that aren’t in use.
That sounds impressive, but honestly, it’s a pretty standard part of modern
top-tier chip design. Perhaps Apple goes further with these design elements
than competing products—without precise figures it’s impossible to know–
but this shouldn’t be viewed as a special new innovation.
• The 3DMark Fire Strike tests we ran were 50 to 60 percent faster (a good
measure of modern high-end 3D game performance). Older 3DMark Ice
Storm Unlimited ran almost 30 percent faster; Apple’s chips already blew
always the competition in this test, and at this point are just running up the
score.
• If you look at the combination of GPU compute performance and gaming-
class 3D benchmarks, it’s fair to say that Apple’s go the fastest overall GPU
in a smart phone right now. It is a closer call than CPU performance, though,
and easier to see a competitor stealing the crown before the introduction of
the A14 in the fall of 2020.

• It’s really interesting that we’re seeing real-world performance far in excess
of Apple’s 20 percent improvement claim. It’s hard to know what’s
responsible for this, but I theorize that it has to do more with memory
bandwidth than peak GPU theoretical performance.

CONCLUSION

The A13 Bionic chip processor is the best processor present todayand we hope
many more processors to come in future. Now Apple is trying to make another
processor that change the present smartphone market. On the other hands,
Snapdragon is also competing with the Apple in the Smartphone processors.
