WORK PROBLEM

The goal of a “working together” problem is generally to figure how fast a job can
be completed if two or more workers do the job together.

1. It takes Ceppee 6 hours to build a fence. If he asks Jandy to help him, together they can
do the job in just 4 hours. How long would it take Jandy to build the same fence if he
works alone?

Step 1: Read and understand the problem

We are asked to find how long would it take Jandy to do the job if he works
alone.

Step 2: Assign variables. Draw a diagram or table if necessary

Let x be the amount of time it takes Jandy to build the fence (in hours) if he works
alone.

Step 3: Write the equations

Ceppee would need 6 hours if he did the entire job by himself, so his working
rate is one-sixth (1/6) of the job per hour.

Likewise, Jandy’s rate is one over x (1/x) of the job per hour. And the rate, if they
worked together, is one-fourth (1/4) of the job per hour.

1 1 1
+ =
6 x 4

Step 4: Solve the equations

1 1 1
+ =
6 x 4

x+6 1
6x
= 4

4 (x+6) = 6x (1)
4x + 24 = 6x

24 = 6x – 4x

24 = 2x

x = 12

Step 5: State the answer

Remember that x represents the amount of time it takes Jandy to build the fence
(in hours) if he works alone. So, working alone, he can build the fence in only 12 hours.

Step 6: Check your answer

2. Ana can wash a car in 6 hours. If Anne helps her in the entire job, they can finish it in 4

hours. How long will it take Anne to do the work alone?

Step 1: Read and understand the problem

We are asked to find the time Anne does the job alone.
Step 2: Assign variables. Draw a diagram or table if necessary

Let x be the time it takes Anne to wash the car (in hours) if she works alone.

Step 3: Write the equations

Ana would need 6 hours to complete the entre job by herself, so her working rate
is one-sixth (1/6) of the job per hour.

If they worked together, rate is one-fourth (1/4) of the job per hour.

1 1 1
6
+ x=4

Step 4: Solve the equations

1 1 1
[ ]
+ = (12x)
6 x 4
multiply both sides of the equation by 12x to

eliminate denominators

2x + 12 = 3x

12 = 3x – 2x

x= 12

Step 5: State the answer

It takes 12 hours for Anne to do the job alone.

Step 6: Check your answer

3. Pipe A can fill a tank in 6 hours. Pipe B takes 4 hours to fill the same tank. How long
would it take them to do the job if they fill the tank together?
Step 1: Read the Problem
We are asked to find the total time it takes the two pipes to fill the tank if they
work together.
Step 2: Assign Variables. Draw a diagram
Let x be the total number of hours it takes them to fill the tank.
Step 3: Write the equation.

Step 4: Solve the equation
1 1 1
+
6 4
= x
4+ 6 1
24
= x
10x = 24
x = 12/5 or 2.4

Step 5: State the answer

It takes 2.4 hours for the two pipes to fill the tank if they work together.

Step 6: Check your answer
